Charlie, Jason and Andrew Out For The Season
    Monday, November 20th 2006

<TD style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">Hodgson: out for season</TD></TR></T></T></TABLE>Champions Sale Sharks’ defence of their Guinness Premiership title was dealt a double blow over the weekend when Charlie Hodgson and Andrew Sheridan were ruled out for the rest of the season following their injuries sustained playing for England against South Africa.

Both players travelled back North straight after Saturday’s game and specialist analysis on Sunday confirmed that both players had suffered serious injuries.

Charlie Hodgson has ruptured his cruciate ligament in a repeat of the injury he sustained to his other knee in 2003, also whilst playing for England. Charlie will have an operation next week, before commencing a rehabilitation programme with the same specialist who saw his successful recovery last time.

Andrew Sheridan has a fracture to his ankle and associated ligament damage, and he too will undergo surgery within the next seven days.

Director of Rugby Philippe Saint Andre said, “This is a terrible blow for the players, for England and for Sale Sharks. Our thoughts are with the players at this moment, but we know that they will receive the very best treatment available to ensure that they return, for club and country, as soon as is possible. Of course their loss is a blow to our aspirations to retain our title, and also to our chances in the EDF and Heineken Cups. However, I have a strong squad here at Sale, and opportunities will now open up for some of our younger players to make a name for themselves. We will not be making excuses – we must instead be inspired by adversity.’

Sale Sharks CEO, Niels de Vos said, “ The international period has been brutal to Sale Sharks this Autumn. Last week we lost Jason White for the rest of the season with cruciate damage, and this week we have lost Charlie Hodgson to the same injury, also for the rest of the season. Andrew Sheridan has a very serious ankle injury and we will be lucky if we see him in a Sale Sharks shirt before May. To lose three of our most important players at this critical stage of the season is a savage blow. Combined with our home defeat against Newcastle on Friday, this has to be one of the worst weekends endured by Sale for many a long year, but we will not allow ourselves to be downhearted. Sport can be cruel sometimes, and the measure of true champions is the ability to triumph against the odds at times. I met with the coaching staff this morning, and they are more determined than ever to meet this challenge head on, starting with getting back to winning ways this Friday night at Edgeley Park against Harlequins.

England Head Coach Andy Robinson OBE said: "Everyone feels for Charlie and Andrew and we wish them all the best for their recovery. They are key members of the squad and they have contributed massively this Autumn. Their absence will be a real blow to England and Sale Sharks."

Ouch. The Sharks will not be near as good without these 3.

Big losses, especially for the guys building to a world cup. Hope they recover fully.

Best of luck to all three players in their recovery! You never like to see players pick up those kind of injuries.

were they ever likely to win it?..

maybe some might have felt it in the week before the TP game last year.. but since then all GP teams have gone downhill fast.

You know it puts ROG's interviews into real perspective. There but for the grace of God, etc. etc.

Really tough on both players. Hope they both make it back as soon as reasonably possible..

I wonder will this have any effect on EOS's weekend team pick for the
Pacific Islands.. especially the way they put Cusiter out of the game
    for 4 months last weekend..!!
He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

ROG doesn't really tackle so no danger of him doing his knee in the way Charlie did, I think you're safe guys.

p.s. That mantle has clearly passed to Girvo. Check out his "attempt" at tackling Habana

I'm willing to forgive him missing a tackle on a man in space running at 700 miles per hour.

Habana must have been doing 705mph in that case.

    Girvo was actually going backwards

I was talking about Habana. Seriously though I don't think anyone would have got him.

Ignore Bandwagon, it's Dan seems to have a problem with players tackling think it's a reaction to the Mal attempt on ROGin the semi final

I must admit that is a decent tackle. Haven't seen him do it since though.

His tackling has been far superior this season, he missed one against SA and he himself mentioned in his post match interviews as his memory of the game.

I've historically been a massive critic of O'Gara and his tackling in particular but if you look at his play in the last 6/9 months objectively you'll see he's a different player now.

ROGs a very good text book side on tackler. He also gets his body in the way to make front on tackles. The problem isn't attempting to tackle (so that BS about he wouldn't pick up the injury the World's Greatest OH did is rubbish). The problem with ROG is he's not powerful enough to stop anyone with a stone + weight advantage every time they run at him.

Cueto has already begun rehabilitation work but the Sharks say he will miss "the next couple of games".

That rules him out of Sunday's return fixture with Stade Francais as well as a Premiership meeting with Bath.

Sale have already lost international trio Charlie Hodgson, Andrew Sheridan and Jason White for the whole season. <!- E SF ->

Samoan centre Elvis Seveali'i has also been ruled out for three months.

"Our bad luck continues and it further disrupts our squad," said Sharks director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre.

"But our preparations have started for the weekend when we will be going all out to beat Stade Francais at home."

Defeat by the French side last weekend all but ended Sale's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage of the Heineken Cup.

They need to win all three of their remaining matches to have any hope of claiming one of the two best runners-up spots. </TD></TR></T></T></T></TABLE>

Cue more wringing of hands and lamenting about the "ridiculous demands being placed on players these days" by everybody involved with theEnglish clubs and theRFU. Then they'll go off and schedule another extraAutumn test, a playoff for the playoffs, an Anglo South African Cup and anything else their accountants tell them they need tomake a few more quid.
