March was indeed excellent. In the South-West, April-May was pretty good too - cold clear frosty nights, but warm sunny days.
I judge the weather by how often I have to heat my water - if the sun shines, the solar panels do the work - and I've had to heat the water much more in June-July-Aug than I had to in April-May.
shane, April overall was dryish - driest in 5-7 years depending on where you were. Yep, there were a few showers at times, but water table was way down from Feb & Mar being very dry. Was cooler than average because the airmass was mainly arctic/N.Euro (plenty of frosts round here). Not unusual, but because of the v. dry Feb and March our v. wet cool summer is only averaging things out.
BTW, Met Eirean's synopsis of the weather is at odds with what happened - they say it was a wet moth because they had a few heavy showers (wind NE all month), so Dublin would be damper than rest of the country; around the country it was the driest in 4-5 years but still near average at 78mm in Snn, but v. cool (-2C down in Snn). May was average in temp and rain, but Jun and Jul have had between 150-250% of average rain and temp about 2C down all over the country. August looking similar.....
I happen to remember April and that constant NE because it's the worst wind of all on Derg, comes all the way from Portumna and no shelter any place. Makes boating hell instead of heaven, and all the worse because the few islands were devoid of foliage (cold temp meant no growth or even budding of trees...).
Seems 'tis all because of global warming.......
Oh, for those of you disciples of Ken Ring.... he predicted a dry warm Jun, Jul and Aug for us.... followed by a cool wet September.
By my reckoning there hasn't been 2 completely dry days in a row in Kerry since June. I've had winter mud tyres on my mountainbike since the start of May. March was the last time we got 4 dry days in a row. You have to feel for the schoolkids that a warm spell starts the day they go back.
When things go wrong, blame McGahan
Good news B.A. - high pressure building and looks like we'll get a bit on an Indian Summer yet.
So put away your mud pluggers and enjoy the autumn rays. I hope to do my first day's mackerel fishing by the end of the week. Have gutters to clean and a bit of paint to splash on before winter sets in too (+ tidy the garden somewhat...).
Nevermind the skulekids - they should be happy to have skule. In our day we...........![]()
Met Eireann have released their report on summer 2012 .. unsurprisingly the summer as a whole was wetter, colder & duller (less sunny) than the average for the summers between 1981-2010.
Dunno why they picked that particular timeframe to compare against, but only belmullet (of the stations compared) was sunnier than average.
Plato: \"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.\"
l l, Coldest, wettest and dullest since records began in most stations; Average temps 1.5-2C below, rain well up on average. Same trend as last year; we seem to be getting colder, wetter summers, overall temp dropping a good bit. The Belmullet 'sunshine' is grasping at straws - it's statistically more/less the same. Knock (just down the road....) had significantly less, and sunshine overall has been significantly down - take one day of sun away from Belmullet and you could say that was significantly down too.
But we all knew we've had a cr*p 'summer'. Just want a few more rays this month before the sun gets too weak to make any difference over winter......
Oh, sunshine...? - we get about 50% of our total sunshine during 'summer', so the lack of sun is significant in both weather and climate stats.
Only 112 shopping days to Christmas left.......![]()
Well looking good for the rest of the week anyways..

Today Mainly dry and bright this afternoon with a mixture of sunny spells and cloudy periods. A few light showers may develop in northern areas, but most places dry. Top temperatures of 16 to 20 C.

Dry and quite cool tonight, with some clear spells at times and some patches of mist and shallow fog also. Lowest temperatures 5 to 9 Celsius, in light variable breezes.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be another bright, mainly dry day, with a mixture of sunny spells and cloudy periods. But fresher than of late, with top temperatures of 15 to 19 C.
Outlook
HEADLINE: Most areas will stay dry for the rest of the week and over the coming weekend and it will become quite warm and humid once again towards the end of the week.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT will be a dry, with clear spells at first, but cloud will increase in many areas, with perhaps a little drizzle near north and northwest coasts. Misty in many other areas also, with fog patches, in near calm conditions. Cold at first, but becoming mild and humid later. Min. 7 to 9 Celsius.
THURSDAY will be dry in most if not all areas, with sunny spells, the best of the sunshine in Leinster and inland parts of Munster, but southern, western and northern coasts are likely to be duller at times, with the risk of some mist or fog patches. Max. 17 to 20 degrees, highest in the east and south, with mostly moderate west to southwest breezes.
FRIDAY will see little change. It will again be dry in most if not all areas, with the best of the sunshine in Leinster and inland parts of Munster and with a continuing risk of misty conditions along some southern, western and northwest coasts. Warmer and very humid. Maximum temperatures 17 to 22 Celsius, with moderate west to southwest breezes.
NEXT WEEKEND is likely to remain dry in most areas. Saturday will still be warm and very humid, with temperatures of 17 to 22 Celsius, in moderate southerly winds. Some patchy light rain or drizzle will develop in the west and north on Saturday night, but it will be mostly dry on Sunday, with sunny spells developing. A little cooler and fresher, with light to moderate westerly winds.
This is why.
Ha, one of only two trips I took this summer was to Belmullet and the Mayo coast. Had a great time and had sunshine nearly the whole time.![]()

Managed to get half my lawn cut this evening thanks to a few dry days. Bloody hell though the darkness was there just after 9.

Blue skies here all day too 2day (I actually recorded that....).
Yep, 'summer' has arrived here as you go off to d'alpes.....! Wonder if there's a link/cause/result in that...?
BTW, I reckon car thermometer might be 7-8 C out, but who cares...! It felt warm, i.e. I didn't need a fleece, or rain jacket....as I left UL at 8:45 2nite......

Oi....! careful with those (delicous...) grenouilles. Do you not know they're protected.... http://www.ipcc.ie/a-to-z-peatlands/frogs/
Might have to get the parks and wildlife guys to get their choppers in the sky; we'll get your lawn declared a (protected....) bog yet...!
You could be mowing that grass in the dark yet....![]()

Protected!!!!! We have more than enough in our 3/4 acre lawn/bog/wetlands to ensure future survival of de common Frog. But the last thing needed in this household is yet another reason to avoid cutting the grass. I've just read that link and note than lawnmowers are not listed in the killers of frogs section so I saw nothing, your honour-nothing at all. (And thanks a lot for ensuring I can't plead ignorance to the wildlife rangers-you're very kind)

Here's what you need Forward: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/g...ipe/index.html
Believe they're also OK on the BBQ, but like Dipstick earlier you might need a gallon or 2 of lighter fuel just to get the thing started this year - still blue sky here today - is that a record, 2 days in a row when we can see the yellow disc thingy...?
MANKY morning in Limerock. Delving since about half 8 this morning.
I am the million man.
Cowboy, Thank your lucky stars that the w-end was dry(-ish) and generally OK. Actually got to sit down with a bevvy after I had done the lawns on Saturday evening. Didn't even need a fleece on......
Last week was the best of this year's Summer..... back to 'normal' though for the coming week.
The northerly wind is making it feels like Autumn is here with a vengance.
Winds strong to gale force along northerly and westerly coasts this evening according to Met Eireann.

Scientists blame warmer Atlantic for wet summers
Recent warming in the Atlantic Ocean is the main cause of wet summers in northern Europe, according to a new study.
