The swallas are going ape around here this evening. They're high and low and in between. Is that some kind of weather indicator? Normally when you see the jackdaws circling and going pretty much ape also, you can be sure of high winds. Haven't seen that this evening despite my proximity to some large rookeries.

Speaking of Sandbags. Can you believe the might Clashawley bursting its banks and flooding Fethard? Normally only a handy little river.

Really hope this turns out to be a thing of nothing. Weve had our fill of weather extremes this year. People of Douglas and wider cork have had it tough.

If you were getting what we are getting in somerset it would be bad, I think you are getting worse. Is it time to start thinking about putting blood on the doors?

Bit of a thing of nothing to be honest, it is nearly just another ordinary day in Ireland with the wind perhaps gusting a tad more than usual.

    Ralph Riegel disagrees.

"Inland, the winds weren't quite as bad as we'd feared but down in west Cork it was a different story. One friend said that winds along the Mizen and Beara Peninsulas were so strong that cars were rocked back and forth even when parked."

I'm just back from an abortive trip to the lighthouse on the Sheepshead. The wind was so strong that it was literally impossible to stand up in, let alone walk in, so we gave up.

EDIT - some storm photos here.

I'm in north Cork and its gusty granted and miserable but certainly not akin to Hurricane Charlie as they were leading us to believe, its obviously different on the coast.

There's a couple of places near here that the vehicles tend to rock back and forth a bit too. Mainly at night though. Council used to send lads there every morning to pick up/dispose of the .... (let's call it evidence....).

And nothing to do with the wind......!

Hope you weren't trying to take a furtive peek as you ambled past..... :0)

Most of the surreptitious shagging hereabouts involves ewes or alpaca, so the wooing vehicle of choice tends to be a tractor.

Not quite, That sub-tropical low was 974 millibars earlier today, expected to fill very slowly and move N-NW over the next 2 days.

Instead of listening to Evelyn and her coterie of likely ladies, here's a real w-forecast service: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...t.html#All~All

Storm track was Fitzroy, Sole, now in Shannon zone. New low (not storm) to take same track. General H to E (i.e. over Europe) keeping us in track of circulating fronts (i.e. more rain) for next few days.

    ---------------------------------------------

I'd blame Ruairí Quinn (and the last government......) for the dumbing down our Met Office leading to all this...................!!!

Ah that reminds me of the old shippng forecast on evening radio when I was a kid "dogger, fisher, german bight" and off I'd go to sleep!

Meanwhile the wind is a hoppin and a hollerin down on the south east coast at the moment.

We might see a change in about a week; moon phases will be changing and we could get a nice Sept (but nothing guaranteed...).

The NE Atlantic hasn't really changed a lot and the guys whose lives (i.e. sailors) continue to use this service because it is the best. Yes, some technology is now better, but professionally trained meteorologists can't be compared with someone who looks good in front of a camera.

But, yep, 'tis been a fairly rough one allright.
