Facebook founder apology over ads

    Facebook has 50 million users worldwide
    The founder of social networking site Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has apologised to users for the way it launched a social advertising system.
    Called Beacon, the system tracks web shopping on partner sites outside Facebook and then sells adverts to the social network based on purchases.

    After complaints the site was invading privacy, Facebook changed Beacon from an opt-out system to opt in.

    Mr Zuckerberg has said users can now switch off Beacon completely.

    In a statement posted on the Facebook blog, Mr Zuckerberg said: "We've made a lot of mistakes building this feature, but we've made even more with how we've handled them.

    "We simply did a bad job with this release, and I apologise for it."

    He added: "I'm not proud of the way we've handled this situation and I know we can do better."

    More than 50,000 Facebook users signed a petition complaining about Beacon. Initially, Facebook said it would not offer users a universal opt-out from Beacon.

    Concerted pressure

    The company relented after concerted pressure from privacy advocates and leading technology writers in the blogosphere.

    But some writers have questioned whether the switch-off option goes far enough.

    Om Malik has questioned if turning off Beacon merely prevents advertisers and Facebook "storing" purchase information.

    If so, he wrote on his website, information from purchases could still be swapped in real time.

    The Facebook apology highlights a growing debate surrounding privacy and advertising in the online space.

    Many privacy advocates are concerned about the use of "web beacons" to monitor the surfing habits of users and to what use that information is put by websites and advertisers.

    Facebook's system raised concern with some users because it meant friends could see which websites and which products they were buying online.

    The adverts were presented as personal recommendations to users because people in their friends' list were, in effect, endorsing brands and products by purchasing items.

    More than 40 companies, including Coca Cola, Blockbuster and Sony Pictures, signed up to Beacon when launched.

    With the irish prisons you'd probably have your own computer and broadband. If not you can always watch the munster matches. Prisoners get sky sports one and two, but not three in the midlands anyway.

    Social networking site Facebook has seen its first drop in UK users in January, new industry data indicates.

    Users fell 5% to 8.5 million in January from 8.9 million in December, according to data from Nielsen Online.

    This was the first drop in user numbers since July 2006 when Nielsen began compiling data on the site.

    Alex Burmaster, European internet analyst at Nielsen

    More to do with workplaces banning it than anything else, I suspect. That and the deluge of invitations to install s**te applications. Oh, and the Fun Wall, which is a device designed to allow you to receive every circular email ever.

    agree with that but i think over-popularity is an issue too. When you find long lost non-friends contacting you on it, it loses its appeal somewhat. One would think they would do something about the viral applications though.

    We banned it at work about 6 months ago (along with other social networking sites, and You tube, streaming media etc). Bandwith use dropped 75%. At the same time, abuse from staff rose about 150%. At a recent away day, one of the more senior guys made a complete ar$e of himself trying to justify the use of Facebook for business contacts. He failed to answer my question of why he couldn't just sent an email or pick up a damn phone.

    Luckily, the powers that be (i.e me ) haven't yet imposed a ban on MF ...

    <!- E IIMA ->
    <!- S SF ->A Moroccan man jailed for pretending to be the brother
    of the king on the social networking site Facebook has been given a
    royal pardon.

    Fouad Mourtada's lawyer said his client had left the Casablanca jail where he was serving his three-year sentence.

    He had been arrested at the beginning of February for "usurping the identity of Prince Moulay Rachid".

    Mr Mourtada had insisted his internet entry was a bit of fun, and a campaign was launched in his support.
    <!- E SF ->

    Mr Mortada's brother Ilyas told the BBC that Fouad was in good health, and was delighted to be free.

    His lawyer said Mr Mourtada was still trying to come to terms with what had happened to him.

    Religious holiday

    His release has delighted Moroccan human rights organisation,
    international pressure groups and internet users around the world who
    had campaigned for his release.

    The king granted the pardon just before the anniversary of the
    birth of the prophet Mohammed, a public holiday in Morocco, and a date
    on which pardons are often announced.

    But the BBC's James Copnall in Rabat says the case shows that the royal family remains a taboo subject in Morocco.

    He says Moroccan journalists and others have learnt that harsh
    words about the king, or Islam, or Morocco itself, can lead to trouble.

    The journalist and editor Ahmed Benchemsi faces up to five
    years in jail over an article he wrote about a speech made by King
    Mohammed VI.

    His trial has been adjourned until September.

    The Islamist leader Nadia Yassine is also facing trial for saying she is in favour of Morocco becoming a republic.

    Untouchable

    The Moroccan establishment is keen to stress the progress it has
    made in opening up the country, particularly since Mohammed VI came to
    the throne nearly 10 years ago.

    <!- S IIMA ->

    <table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="203">

    <!- E IIMA ->

    Under his father, Hassan II, Morocco had an appalling human rights record.

    Political opponents and human rights activists, among many
    others, faced terrible conditions in Moroccan jails, often merely for
    objecting out loud.

    But while most people agree society is more open now, Moroccans know the king and the royal family remain almost untouchable.

    King Mohammed VI is regarded as a descendent of the Prophet
    Muhammad, and to question his authority is seen as a challenge to his
    religious role as the Commander of the Faithful.
