I'm reading the Earthsea books at the moment. I'm only about 130 pages into the first, but holy **** am I now a fan of le Guin. I previously had only read The Dispossessed but I genuinely think that as a Sci-Fi novel it's up there with the very best, intellectual Sci-Fi.

Earthsea just seems so rich. And all the characters have a depth and complexity to them, despite not doing very much. I'm really enjoying it. So much so that I'm tired today from lack of sleep. And kept reading last night despite sore eyes. Also, if the Earthsea books were originally intended for children/teens, then it's definitely the case that modern children are thick as ****.
I know something that will blow your minds. I can't tell you and I can't tell you why I can't tell you. You'll know soon and then I'll be confirmed right.

I enjoyed the Dark Tower series too SRG. Very dark in places but a gripping read

Apparently King is considering a new addition, an eight book, to the series. He mentions this in the copy of 11.22.63 I have. Says it will be published in Spring 2012. Not sure how that will work given it was supposed to be finished after book 7??

Finally got around to buying Matt Hampson's 'Engage, the fall & rise of Matt Hampson' to be honest I think I've been a bit afraid of reading it. Was nice to see the dedication on the inside cover of this edition 'In memory of Stuart Mangan'

Just saw this, if you can stand to rummage through a lot of rubbish you can find good stuff in the one on Little Catherine street.

Anyhow, just finished Dinner with Mugabe, an attempt to profile Robert Mugabe. It's a decent read even if the author overreaches sometimes. He's a complex man, if he'd left office even as late as the mid 1990's he might have saved his rep. Tony Blair's government and Labour in general come off quite poorly from it to.
It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.

    The Little Red Hen.
I bought an old Ladybird publication, hardback, of this memorable tale recently for a song and wish to recommend it, highly.
There, squirreled away in it were twenty notes of the euro denomination.
I can't help wishing that the little red hen might have shared the cake in the end.

Brutal tale of a drug smugglers time in Thai prisons in the 80's. Very short book, I started and finished it in an evening but it was so absorbing that I may well have read through the night

Awesome book. His first effort was pretty good - An Evening of Long Goodbyes - but Skippy Dies is destined to be something of a classic. Simply brilliant...

Just finished "First Thrills", which is a selection of short stories compiled by Lee Child and Jeffery Deaver. It mixes well known thriller authors with new and up-and-coming authors of the genre. Has introduced me to some interesting new ones.

Not a big fan of the short story normally, and definitely not in the thriller mode where the conclusion is too quick, but as an exercise in bringing new authors to a reader's attention, it fulfilled its remit.

Just finished 'The Vintner's Luck' by a NZ lady called Knox. It's early 1800s in France and a small wine producer encounters an angel . Best book I've read in quite some time . Deals with love, loss ,ageing and the nature of being. A really really wonderful read but it will keep you up.

Just finished The Oslo Trilogy by Jo Nesbo - The Redbreast, Nemesis and The Devil Star in one book. Really enjoyed it. Revolves around detective Harry Hole. When I got them the first 2 in the series hadn't been translated into English yet, and there's another 4 after these 3. I don't think you're missing anything from not having read the first 2 but having said that, when I do get to read them a few things in those 3 books will more than likely fall into place.

Looking forward to The Twelve. by Justin Cronin, second part of a sci-fi vampire trilogy which started with The Passage. Puts those Twilight vampire books to shame, restoring the vampire to its true position of pitiful terror. Usually a Stephen King fan, and would regard this book as a cross between Salems Lot and The Stand.

One of the great irish books of our time - unless the pompous and overrated Banville or Toibin, or even Joe O'Connor, this is a book of world class. Read it now!
