It will always be something that your Son can always say he did with you. Not many kids his age telling his mates about it today.I did! Well just about. We went up via Maynooth (where we were staying overnight) & Navan & made great time up the M3, it then took about an hour to cover the last 3miles. The Castlepark campsite was grand for parking (€20) & easy to access the gig. Security was heavy we were searched & frisked twice on way in.
When we got in (around 5pm) it was a bit of a shock. I expected the back field areas around the mobile burger bars to be ok but it was packed. When you're with a young lad in that environment you're on full alert, it felt a bit menacing as many were plainly locked. I was looking for a route in case any fighting broke out, the reality was there wasn't any clear one. About an hour before the main act a lot of people must have moved down towards the stage & a bit of space appeared, I could relax then. Actually there were a few young lads from Swords in front of us who made a lot of my son, fair play to them, nice lads. Downside we were miles from any of the bars & wasn't wading through the crowd with him in tow. Upside was the music, Eminem gave a great show, I was surprised how many of his songs I recognised. Didn't do much by way of chatting with the crowd but we were there for the music so that's ok. One of his crew kept shouting Yo Ireland at the end of every tune which was a bit of a pain. Eminem has some quality music & his lyrics are first rate.
We headed off at the start of the last song before the encore & we were back in Maynooth an hour after we left the show.
The lads from Swords were saying that the ambience at the Kings of Leon was much more enjoyable & relaxed. You could have a few beers around Slane beforehand.
Anyway, was it suitable for the young lad, not for this gig, security was tight getting but not much in evidence inside, well not in around the crowd. I guess a hip hop show will always be a little edgey. I'm delighted that my son got to see him & came home thrilled with his tour t-shirt and the experience. For me that's the main thing. I worked security for Guns 'N' Roses at Slane but I felt as if I was working way more last night. It wasn't the smartest call to bring him. But it worked out okay
