    De-Centralisation of players

With the ever-growing warehouse of players up in Dublin and with one or two Munster prospects doing nothing but training with very little game time, I propose the IRFU bring in a directive whereby:

Should a player receive less than X minutes of game time in the 2013/14 season, that player is to be re-assigned to another Province, with the Province with the biggest deficit in that position being prioritised

Time spent injured will not be included in this calculation

Share the wealth for crying out loud!

true enough.. but we'd get hagan in return, and in rwc 2015,
we could have four decent IQ'd players in every position.
You'd have IQ'd guys competing with IQ'd guys.. instead Of
against the likes of botha, afoa.

And you can't force a lad to move.

There should certainly be more incentives offered though.

What if they refuse? And even without that, it's surely only workable for centrally contracted players right? They're not going to be missing much game time anyway.

Leave Dublin, just when the support group that he founded - MPWSHSICA (Misguided Players Who Should Have Stayed In Connacht Anonymous) - has had a surge in membership? Unthinkable. What would Sean and Jamie do without him?

As of now, it seems the only incentive that Carr and Hagan got up in Dublin was a shiny, new Leinster tracksuit...

carr, hagan, cronin, ... lotta talent in that trio alone.
There is an argument that a competitive connacht, well coached,
with players of this calibre, and say you throw in the likes of nagle, TOL..
leaders like brad thorn.. Pay them equal what they'd get in leinster..
you could have a huge turnaround.
Galway is not the worst place to live at all, for a young rugby player.

Well they get their stars while Ireland has two under-cooked hookers in Cronin and Strauss rather than one in top form. And now with Tight-head? When the record books are written and rugby historians wonder where Irish rugby went wrong, look no further than Leinster's squad. Warehousing of players - such a good idea in theory. Then again, so is Socialism

Ok, even I think Brad Thorn to Connacht is a bit far fetched!

People talk about how awful it would be to see Nagle go to Leinster...would you prefer him to stay here and rot away? I for one would be delighted to see him get a chance up there if it meant he got more game time.

not if he got enough wedge. All about the wedge.
I doubt if he feels anymore at home in dublin then he
would in galway.. maybe he likes the countryside, who knows.

I'd prefer to see him in Connacht for this and next season. He needs games and they need players. Leinster can go buy in another superstar.

He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

He could prefer living in pig **** but thats not the determining factor there. Mercenaries are about the money and I cant see Connacht branch having the funding for the likes of him!

He wouldn't get on for them at this stage!! Back 3 is better without Duffy there too! in the example of Carr not getting game time, thats his own fault for going to the HC Champs and not having hope of getting on! I Wouldn't send him back west, and if i was there i wouldn't want him. Think promoting from within is the way to go instead of fishing at other provinces unless the player is a free agent with no connections to L,U or C

Why would we want Hagan? In his time in Leinster he's been as unreliable as Archer in the scrum. Every time he plays again Du Preez he gets mushed, and Wian is no baby eater. Munster got a penalty try against Leinster with Horan against Hagan! At least Archer has the excuse that he's inexperienced, Hagan got tons of gametime at Connacht to become a good scrummager. Leinster are supposed to have amazing scrum coaches as well. Bent is here now, and if he's anyway good Hagan will be dropped from the HEC bench again.

In summary, no thanks. They've got a lot of good young props like Moore or Furlong alright though, one of those might be good.

Does any other country manage their players in this way, swapping players around like pogs to whoever needs them most in their collection? It all sounds a bit fanciful and presumes the player has no particular loyalties to a province or problems with packing up and moving across the country at a whim.

Carr and Hagan especially made pretty terrible career moves to leave Connacht but why does everyone assume they regret it? They're both dubs so perhaps they're happier to bench for their favourite team than play a major role for another.

Wouldnt get into the connacht team now anyway so its largely irrelevent. hagan would be useful simply because he's a TH. But White is far superior

I couldn't see it working. How do you determine the "province with the biggest deficit in the position" for one? Appoint a committee to decide I guess but it's still going to be a matter of opinion as to who needs what the most.
More IRFU involvement....as someone said above- no thanks

it could put pressure on the provinces to play younger talented players more often than they should be to meet the allocated game time minutes (not every player will develop the same way).

Players may not want to move for all sorts of reasons...they are happy where they are, they want to stay near family/ girlfriend...they may have kids and want to stay near family for support. They may be doing night courses etc.

Anyway, the provinces do need deep squads if they are to continue to compete for and win trophies. Take away their best young players and youre leaving a big hole.
I don't think there's as many players wasting away as some believe

    A bad idea.

It'd potentially mean that the rebuilding and succession that Munster for example have done in recent times could be undone at IRFU level.

    No thanks.

    Its fairly straightforward.

Suppose Munster had no irish tight-head.

If one other province had 2-3 good irish tight-heads it would make sense for one of them to go there. But unfortunately ideas like that are too much of a walk in the wild-side here.

The provincial brick baiting is more important then the health of the game

Leinster have no second row for example. Munster have quite a few.

There is plenty of players wasting away due to the central contracting system.

It'd be like rugby communism. The weakest current squad would be the biggest net beneficiaries.

Then let Munster make one of those tight-heads an offer. And even if two provinces enter into a deal whereby they swap players for their mutual benefit then thats fair enough IMO.
but why should a province be forced to give up a player that has been in their system since he started playing? Said player may not be first choice now but could be desperately needed in two years time, and at that stage he has been given away to someone else.

And it's not about provincial brick baiting. Id love for Munster to get a good Irish tight head but I don't believe we should be just given one.
