Glaws player Should get a severe ban for this ?

Just saw this on You tube. There's one thing throwing a punch at someone, but this is surely one of the worst cases of violence I've seen on a rugby field. Its about half way through the video.

Stupid from Hazell and he should get a lengthy ban, but the refs have got to start getting a handle on all the off the ball stuff and snide little trips that are starting to undermine the spirit of the game IMO. Not defending Hazell whose use of the knee in particular is unforgivable but I would like to see a few more yellows handed out for the off the ball stuff.

Yeah it's pretty bad alright. In his defence he has never been sent off before and it appears he was provoked. But again, it is bad.

The touch judges should be watching for the off the ball stuff and telling the ref what's happening.

Oh dear. He lost the plot there. He'll be lucky to get back playing. He needs anger management courses where he will just belt one every other game and carry on like some laws allow.

Glaws said he was provoked by bad eye-gouging before the incident, and said his eyes were extremely red afterwards

Taz-Where did you get that information as I have seen nowhere that he(Penney) was ruled out?

    - This article originally said Rob Penney had missed out on the Munster coaching job. That information was incorrect.

Hard to see any eye gouging in that video.

Can see from the clip above that the prop no.23, when falling on Hazell throws his fist straight into the eye region, more likely a punch than a gouge but the reaction was incredible from a veteran like!

says in the statement that tit was one of several times they "tried to severely injure" him

Just qouting his claim of provokation. Totally agree, you wouldn't mind and ole fisty cuffs at dawn but throw haymakers when on the floor and kneeing him in the head is outta line.

But he's never had disciplinary issues before which would suggest provokation at hand

Repeatedly punching a fella who is lying face down on the ground (and not really moving too, that's what worried me most on first viewing) and then kneeing him in the head and more punches... don't care what happened before that, Hazell deserves a LONG time away from the game

Thats disgusting, from the camera angle from the back you can see a ballboy looking on about 20ft away who cant be any more than 13....lovely image of rugby there. Anyone who punches/knees someone face down on the pitch should be filing an application in the dole office.

I watched the video again - it's even worse than I remembered. Deserves a long, long ban at least

He'll probably be made an example of as he is a non international player near the end of his career. If it was Manu Tuilagi (for arguments sake) he'd be back playing within 2 weeks...

Certainly in time for the AIs but offences committed in Europe are not under the jurisdiction of the RFU so he might be handed down a proper sentence.

a bit of a beating for a gouger you can possibly understand but that knee to the head was lunacy. the buy was lucky to have tried to protect his head after a previous punch

If what Glaws have said is true, i.e. this was not one incident but the culmination of several attempts to injure him, then what's he supposed to do? Wait to be blinded? If he's not being protected by the officials then he needs to protect himself. IF that's what happened, if not then lunacy with long, long ban.

    ERC have posted the following

    http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/news/19297.php

Gloucester Rugby referred a number of incidents from the match to the Citing Commissioner, John West (Ireland), for consideration. The Citing Commissioner determined that there was no evidence to support any citings from this match.

Not being citable offences just means they weren't likely red cards.

I'd have a huge amount of sympathy for Hazell if he hadn't thrown the knee in his reaction, being forearmed off the ball twice in 5 minutes is a fair amount of provocation.

The fact ERC couldn't find video doesn't mean it didn't happen - be fair here, the ERC struggle to find their own arse with both hands on a good day. Bearing in mind Martyn Williams got away with an unprovoked knee to the head of Chris Paterson (which I don't recall people losing their marbles over like this) then why is the knee a big deal? If the guy did cheap shot him from behind is it Hazell's fault that someone who dishes it out can't take it back and was sparko after the first hit?

I would think 12 weeks suitable but think he'll get twice that.
