    Costello Facing Busy Week
    9 October 2012, 11:43 pm
    By The Editor

In his dual role as British & Irish Cup Coach and Skills Coach to the Senior squad, Ian Costello won't be doing too many household chores for the next two weeks.

He will be in Cork today as the entire squad assemble for the first session of the week and then tomorrow he will take charge of the British & Irish squad in Limerick (UL) to prepare for the opening game of this year's British & Irish Cup away to Plymouth Albion.

"We've seen a couple of games they've played." Costello says "They've had an excellent start to the season. Their best start in recent years. They've won four of their first five games in the Championship and currently they're third."

"From what footage we've seen of them they're a very big strong physical side. Very direct but capable of moving the ball as well."

Outside of themselves, there may not have been much expectation of Munster in last year's competition but wins away in Belfast and Dublin left them with a Musgrave Park final and a chance that they took with some aplomb to claim the title. So now there's a big target on their back as defending champions.

But it's a target Costello is happy to carry. "It's a competition that for a few years we've been striving to win. And to win it last year and especially at home gave us a huge boost." he says.

"I suppose what it does is, it creates a bit of excitement around the start of the competition this season. There's certain pressure that comes with being champions You've got to set certain standards."

" And look," he continues," that's a challenge the lads will embrace. They'll set themselves high standard. They'll ask a lot of each other."

"And our focus, first and foremost will be to get a win this Saturday. We follow up with a home game in Tralee the following week which is pretty exciting as well."

"So we're just looking at these block of first two games."

Plymouth have the advantage of playing week in, week out but that doesn't really bother Costello.

"This year there's an added interprovincial competition that I think gives us much better quality matches thoroughout the season rather than the friendlies we had before this."

"We played Ulster and we played Connacht in two of those interpro games. Our most recent one was the game against Connacht, a game we lost and we were very disappointed with the result."

"But looking at the side we put out that day, it was very much a development side. Not taking away from Connacht, they were excellent on the day, but that selection probably won't resemble the side that will play this Saturday in the B & I Cup."

"We're confident going into this weekend that we'll be as organised and prepared as we need to be."

Just seen the injury news. Hammer blow really. Revised A team based on loosing Earls, Du Preez and Ronan from the firsts.

    1. Cronin
    2. Henry
    3. Ryan
    4. Foley
    5. Hayes
    6. Buckley
    7. B O'Mahony

    11. Dineen
    12. Hanrahan

Might be heading down the road for this one although I will miss the first twenty minutes or so watching the HEC game in the bar, unless we have got the try BP in the bag by three O'clock!?!

is it more likely Dineen and Barnes will be swapping?

Possibly. Given that Dineen isn't in the H-Cup squad I reckon he might be chucked out onto the wing. Personally I'd have Dineen at 12, Barnes at 13 and JJ at out half. The bench for the A team is probably about where Deasy belongs on current form.
Johnne could very easily end up at full back with Hircock on the wing too.

Keatley I'd imagine. There is a logic there alright for picking Barnes ahead of O'Dea for the firsts, but I don't see it.

    How Keatley?
I can't remember him playing one single game for Munster in the centre. It's the HEC, so I imagine if it came down to it, Barnes will get the bench spot, unless Dineen is fit and up for selection?

Jones may be in contention for Plymouth going by the injury updates.

Taz-Where did you get that information as I have seen nowhere that he(Penney) was ruled out?
Editor - The writer stands by the Penney information.

    Editor-
    - This article originally said Rob Penney had missed out on the Munster coaching job. That information was incorrect.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Dineen is even in the Heineken squad. My point was that O'Dea has generally been selected ahead of Barnes all season so I would imagine he may get the call to wear 23 in Paris this weekend. In that case if Downey had to go off injured Keatley may well be the most likely option to fill in at 12.
Like I said above, Mannix and Penney may decide this is too big a risk and they may bring Barnes to France due to him being able to cover 11-14.
In that scenario I can see O'Dea coming in at full back for the A's with Johnne Murphy and probably Ronan O'Mahony on the wings. Dineen should move to 13.

    Wasn't that O'Dea?
I don't think Felix has played a minute of rugby in 5 months or more.
We have enough cover amongst the academy guys for the Plymouth game.
I reckon 25 minutes off the bench for Shannon this weekend is more likely for Jones.

Nagle back fit too. Thought Hanrahan would be in with the HEC squad for cover.

Dineen, Johnne Murphy or LOD presumably for the last spot. Injury dependent I'd imagine.
Great to see Nagle and Jones back.

Will be trying my best to persuade Mrs PP that I need to go down to Plymouth on saturday. Complicated because it is going to be a long day to get there in time for the HEC game but that team would make it well worth having the conversation anyway.

Who's covering our HEC props, if one gets injured. Surely it would have been better to bring Ryan to Paris as backup LH/TH cover?

I wonder is he travelling to France as emergency cover? I would be surprised if Hircock and O Mahony were picked ahead of him (presuming he suffered no setback with Shannon last weekend)

I reckon he's going to France as cover for POC. If there is even a hint of a prop injury between now and Saturday morning then J Ryan will be on the first flight/train to Paris.
