On the knighthood, the creepiness aside, it seems like he was very good at compartmentalising his life to stop someone joining up the dots. Apparently that's why he had so many different homes. Whoever looked into him for the knighthood wouldn't have found anything for the same reason the papers didn't nail his bastard arse to the wall years ago, suspicion is one thing proof was much, much harder. Bearing in mind there is no "proof" now beyond people finally speaking out. Without that evidence there was nothing but a huge amount of (self publicising) charity work.

OD as you well know I don't do politics and i certainly won't be going into bat for labour or the f*cking liberals if they try and make this party political. But it can't be denied that Jimmy Saville was a big fan of Mrs Thatcher and his numerous invites to Chequers would indicate that the admiration was mutual. However the BBC has got plenty for which it has to answer, and the institution knows it full well.

Not sure really means as much as some make out, every political crook in the world has been well connected. For a reason. That's how they went about their crimes. According to one account Saville would cultivate important people. For example every time the senior local police structure changed he'd wine and dine the incoming senior officers. As with many abusers, he tried to ingratiate himself wherever possible to protect himself and open up opportunity.
Very good comment from Ian Hislop last night, all the people claiming they knew is suspicious. They heard the rumours doesn't mean they KNEW and if they did know then they should be investigated by the police for taking no action. I'd disagree. He was a DJ and a charity fun runner. Those people don't often find themselves rubbing shoulders with ex Directors of the CIA at Knights of Malta get togethers, or being invited to chequers.

I don't think that description really covers him. He was a DJ (and a wrestler and a dance hall manager and a lot of things) originally. But by the time he got the honours he'd been throwing himself at every charity opportunity possible at every chance. Also fun runner probably doesn't get close to what he was, he was the first big charity runner and at an extended age as well. With hindsight he was a massive self publicist over every piece of "good work" he did. He courted people in high position - he was exactly the kind of big name who got honours.

It is but you know what, being a parent, I don't care that much. Now don't get me wrong I don't want to see mob rule because it will go badly wrong and end up with innocent men being victimised, so just publishing half the details is a screw up. But I don't want paedophiles being allowed to live near children and by the nature of their "condition" **** 'em I don't feel sympathy or care if they live in a cesspit. Cruel possibly but I genuinely don't care. I'd love to come on here and theorise and pretend to be of a higher nature but it would be bull**** because the safety of children should come above all else. And another thing, while I'm at it, publish the details of the arseholes who let paedophiles loose in society. If a judge lets one off with a non-custodial sentence and they offend, lock the judge up as well, they're as much to blame.

The dilemma I have is that if someone told me the guy across the road was an offender, I'd instantaneously move closer to a custodial sentence myself.
Publishing those details only makes it more likely that some sort of catastrophe takes place.
The answer, for me at least, is that child abusers should be indefinitely detained.
