As I read the other day, could Jimmy Saville be the death knell for the BBC license fee?

I know its the Daily Mail, but nevertheless an interesting report. Peel is mentioned several times.

Sandi Toksvig claims she was groped while broadcasting
Comedian Sandi Toksvig says she was groped by a "famous individual" while she was broadcasting in the 1980s.
Toksvig, 54, said when she told staff, "everybody thought it was amusing".
The comments follow claims by BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Liz Kershaw that she was "routinely groped" during her time at Radio 1 in the 1980s.
The BBC said it was "shocked" by Kershaw's allegation and encouraged "anyone with information on such issues to also speak to the police".
Toksvig's broadcasting career began in the 1980s when she worked largely on ITV and Channel Four.
She told the Andrew Marr Show on BBC One that "things were very different" in the industry then.
"I was once very unpleasantly groped while I was broadcasting by a famous individual who shall remain nameless.
"When I told the staff afterwards what had happened everybody though it was amusing. There was a shrugged shoulder approach to the whole thing. It wasn't something anybody talked about."
Toksvig, who now presents several programmes on BBC Radio 4, said the allegations of inappropriate behaviour at the BBC "did not surprise me at all".
"I had heard those stories when I was working at the BBC," she added.
The BBC's new director general George Entwistle has urged staff to "come forward" and talk to police if they have any information about alleged sexual abuses by the late presenter Sir Jimmy.
Kershaw, who joined Radio 1 around the time Sir Jimmy was leaving, said: "The rumours were there, the jokes were there. It was an open secret."
She described the atmosphere at the time as "intimidating" and said the station had changed out of all recognition since the 1980s.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme she remembered the unnamed presenter fondling her breasts while she was on live radio.
"I couldn't say anything, I couldn't even exclaim because I was broadcasting to the nation," she said.
"When I complained to somebody they were incredulous and said 'Don't you like it? Are you a lesbian?"'
Several women have alleged Sir Jimmy sexually assaulted them as teenagers, sometimes on BBC premises.
In the email to staff, Mr Entwistle added he was "appalled" by the allegations made in an ITV documentary about the former presenter.
Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Prime Minister David Cameron said the allegations were "truly shocking".
No complaints were received by the BBC at the time of the alleged abuses.
The Met Police is investigating claims against Sir Jimmy Savile on a UK-wide basis
An earlier statement from the Metropolitan Police confirmed officers had met officials from the BBC who were "fully co-operating with detectives" in the wake of the claims made about Sir Jimmy.
"We do not expect to have a clear picture of exactly how many women may have suffered abuse until next week and want to allow time for victims to reflect on what they may have experienced."
Mail seem to be really going for this - not sure why but they might be serving some purpose for a while. Interesting point I've seen made a couple of times. BBC were happy to take every opportunity to report growing scandal of catholic church and paedophiles, not so quick to jump at the chance to broadcast what is starting to look like far more than just one odd character within their own ranks. They've lined themselves up for the deluge that is coming their way. I wonder does anyone at the Beeb now think they'd have been better airing that programme.

The Mail are going for it because it's a stick to beat the BBC. No love lost there.

Odd that his own family should have already pulled down his gravestone, smashed it up and threw it in a landfill. These are after all still just allegations, at this stage. This seems to indicate that they clearly always knew, and are now in damage limitation mode.
Seems more allegations of abuse are surfacing in Manchester.....

I'd say if the full truth were to be known and everybody famous, who was at it at that time, was named it would be beyond belief. I reckon there is a huge cover up here that will never be fully revealed.

Guys, worked for the BEEB in television centre for many years and was witness to many incidents of bullying by coworkers, stars etc, have seen young makeup girls lashed viciously and left in tears by a famous octogenarian whose wig was always requiring work.
Never heard of or saw any sexual abuse of young kids, but the opportunity was there for many of those in the limelight, most kids under 10 were usually accompanied by adults, but over that age they were in many cases not supervised and would have been vulnerable to advances from the "Stars".
It is a male, masonic order, dominated institution, without the handshake you are not advancing and they protect their own, always.
Wilfred Bramble, of steptoe and son fame had to be bailed out of shepherds bush nick numerous times by the production staff for exposing himself and soliciting in the toilets on shepherds bush green.
Lots of stories, I know personally of young makeup, costume and production staff girls pressurized by stars and senior production staff for sex in order to advance their careers. Lots who didn't succumb but many more who did.

true, but in this case the beeb had it coming, they've been happy to highlight others' behaviour, I think this is well and truly welcome to payback time for them. I don't think airing the programme would have removed the beating they will get but it might have lessened it.

\"A million monkeys with a million crayons would be hard-pressed in a million years to create anything as cretinous as Battlefield Earth.\"
Story put out is they did it out of respect for the feelings of those who have relatives buried in the cemetery, not sure if that's to stop the vandalism from desecrating the cemetery or just his garish stone from doing that on its own. They are supposed to have smashed it up but truth be told the pictures in the papers are difficult to see as definitely being that grave stone and not general rubble. I suspect what will get done on his grave soon won't pass for flowers considering the plaque outside one of his many abodes was defaced within hours.

Not to defend Jimmy Saville but the man raised tens of millions of pounds for charity; it now appears his motives were far from altruistic but which ever government it was that handed him the honour (the Queen extends very few personal honours) and he was a tory supporter, would not have been undertaking anything controversial according to what was known about the man.
