    Darren Sweetnam Signs Development Contract

Cork hurler Sweetnam to sign professional terms in Munster

Reports in Cork say that Darren Sweetnam will trade in
the small ball for a larger oval one.

CORK HURLING WILL be dealt a major blow by the decision of midfielder Darren
Sweetnam to accept a development contract with Munster.

    Cork radio station C103 has
reported that the 19-year-old, a regular in both Munster Rugby under-20′s and
Cork’s senior hurling fifteen, has indeed decided to focus his attentions
    on professional sport.

Interesting. Saw him play with Cork over the summer and he is a mighty hurler. JBM will be disappointed with his decision but Cork hurling's loss could be Munster's gain. I have never seen him play rugby but going on a few reports I've heard and read he has got great potential. Anyone seen him play rugby care to comment on him??

Brutal loss to Cork hurling, this is demoralising from a hurling point of view, the lad is a serious talent having represented Ireland in hockey and badminton as well. By all accounts he is going very well at full back and scored a try on his first game back, I really hope it goes well for him and I cant see any reason why it wont work out.

That is a decent young player to get signed.

Good news for Munster, though I can appreciate it's a kick to hurling fans.

The more talented athletes we can get playing with Munster the better imo, if it doesn't work out he can always go back to the GAA.

Played 10 for Bandon Grammar, has played on the wing but mainly full back for the underage side in Munster this year. Serious achievement from the rugby crowd to nab him after he became a regular member of the Cork senior panel. ANybody know if Greg O'Shea is being pushed to decide between the rugby and the athletics?

So has anybody seen this fella play? I saw him briefly in one of them there hurleyball matches a month or so ago. He looked quick enough. He must be highly rated to be getting a development contract at that age. Only JJ and Butler have gotten those at such an early age, so he's in good company.
We'll have to uncuff him and "de-dildo" him, obviously... Smash up the furniture like he was chasing you all rapey. Fortunately, he's Italian so that shouldn't be too hard to sell.

I think he played wing/fullback this year in part because he missed a lot if not all the squad training in Rockwell? He only really joined up after the hurling finished up.

I've heard O'Shea is going towards rugby but early days yet.

Delighted he has apparently decided to give the rugby a shot.

Sprinter who plays on the wing for Crescent, set a personal best of 10.87 for 100ms this summer. I can't see him making it in athletics tbh, it's fast but not fast enough surely?

Any further info on this young man. Don't watch hurling much so don't know much about him. Seems to be fairly well liked and highly rated given all the effort, or so I've heard, the branch put into getting him on board. In terms of potential what are we looking at Shaun Payne solid or more Rob Kearney at his best?

    Sweetnam Joins Academy

Munster today confirmed that Darren Sweetnam has accepted an Academy contract.

The 19 year old who played for the Cork senior hurlers this summer has already represented Munster at Under 18 Schools and Under 19s level, and was fullback for the Munster Under 20s this season. Sweetnam, who has represented Ireland in Hockey (U16) is understood to have informed his Gaelic club and Cork hurling officials about his decision over the weekend.

He's got the brain of Christian Cullen, the heart of Denis Leamy, the pace of Brian Habana, the step of Phil Bennet, and the wallet of Joey Fantastic.
    Useless at tighthead though.

Cork hurling suffers and a promising youngster signs up with the Academy?

I like that, I really do.
Governments don't ask themselves "what can we do that is good for the people?". They ask themselves "how do we persuade people that what we want to do is good for them?".
