    Róisín Shorthall Resigns

Minister of State Róisín Shortall resigns

Minister of State at the Department of Health Róisín Shortall has resigned this evening.
It follows days of controversy during which she demanded an explanation from Minister for Health James Reilly for his controversial decision to add two towns in his constituency to a priority list for the location of new primary care centres.

A statement is expected shortly from Ms Shortall, who had responsibility for primary care.

It is understood that she has also resigned the Labour party whip.

Dr Reilly and Ms Shortall met for more than half an hour in Leinster House yesterday evening. They had been expected to meet again in the coming days.

She is going to be a right thorn in Eamon & Enda's side now. Looking forward to seeing them squirm.

Edit Gilmore has lost 4 TD's in 18 months is that a record? Cannot remember how many jumped from FF when the PD's were formed 3?

She'll have no Dáil speaking time whatsoever* (unless she joins the Technical Group) and will have to sit among the detritus on the opposition back benches - her choice will be to sit beside Mick Lowry and Mattie McGrath or beside Ming the Moron, Dolly Healy-Rae, and Mick Wallace's fancy woman!

    * you may have noted that we haven't heard a single peep from the other pair of Labour renegades (Penrose and Nulty) since they took the chicken run.

He's dead right. The sooner that the Labour TDs all bugger off, the sooner that the Croke Park agreement can be dismantled.

You think the other parties have the goolies to take on Croke Park and chop it up OD?

It'd be a political cyanide pill for whoever took it on.

Do You really think it will be OD? Varadkar has been very definite on it not being an Option?

It certainly seems that the stickies wing of the Labour party very much have the upper hand now. This says a lot more about Labour than it does about James Reilly.

I hear a FG policy is to immediately reduce all public service pensions by up to 20%. Sliding scale but higher grades will bear the brunt.

FG aren't stupid, another campaign of disobedience or work to rule in the Public service will bring about another agreement. Croke Park will survive , however I agree about the allowances issue, an awful lot of ridiculous allowances that need to go and not just be rolled up into core pay.

I'm not particularly familiar with the allowances. I know there are certain ones which are ludicrous. Mate in counsel has told me some of the more wasteful ones. But I do often think that some allowances are indeed core pay to all intents and purposes. There's an argument for Allowances that were added to positions to enable them recruit in the first Place where people took the jobs because of them. Granted there's an argument that this was done to get around pay structures in the first place so it's a two sided coin.

Róisín is certainly one to keep on the inside of the tent if at all possible. Will be far more damaging peeing in.

She had to resign after Reilly's letter proved that she had told lies about him on TV3 last week.

Interesting times a head for Labour are not SF due to table a motion of no confidence in Reilly in the next couple of weeks?

No (but another lovelorn Dail couple could be fun). Its the future of the country expressing innocent incredulity at your post.

What I posted was 100% correct - she was exposed by TV3 as a liar - hours ago, in fact. Do try to keep up!

That may or may not be true-this is the letter that was 'found' today? But either way, it certainly wasn't the reason for today's resignation, as you very well know. Her resignation was always coming after last week's nonendorsement of your old GP, the Labour Party's lack of support for Roisin since her Dail speech and their 'brisk' meeting today.

The really interesting speculation now is how long for Dr. Reilly?

And the really, really interesting speculation now is: how long for Gilmore?
