    The October Carnage

    Penneys description, not mine.

Beware, the October Carnage is upon us. Four matches that could make or break our season. How will the transitional Munster deal with it?

We might deal with it,then again we might not. Hows that?

Dont think these matches define any teams season. As usuual people are getting all hot and bothered about Septembers performances but as Leinster showed in 2009, come May the first few matches are always long forgotten about.

If we dont get something from rounds 1 & 2 of the HEC then that competition is over for us (and any other side). Its pretty much a knock out competition, the pools are vicious.

Disappointed thought i was going to see a demolition derby thread...

losing away to o's and leinster won't break our rabo season....we'll have our 3 hardest away games in rabo done and dusted ( away to Ulster being 3rd)

losing to Edinburgh at home in game 2 is the only season killer.

Won't make our season but could certainly break it.

I wonder how many folks would have expected Munster to be approaching this first real challenging phase of the season with a 3 out of 4 record in the Rabo and with some very encouraging performances to boot?

I think we should continue with the same attitude I believe most of us have of simply enjoying each game as they come and our new style of play and enjoying watching our up-and-coming players develop like LOD, DOC2, Butler, Sherry, TOD etc improve and impress.

I have to say it's been a long long time, may years since I have enjoyed watching Munster rugby as much as this season, no more churning stomach full of nerves and no 'obsession with the opposition' that drove me mental during the years of our self-imposed incredibly high expectations of Munster which have now been significantly watered down by the new management and an understanding that this is a new phase in this team's journey.

Who knows what will happen in October against the likes of the Rabo Champions and EC Champions? But I'm loving every moment of this and that, for me, is brilliant. I hope it's the same for others?

What I have been incredibly impressed by, thus far, is the significant amount of options/conundrums we have throughout the team:

    1. WDP Vs Kilcoyne
    2. Varley Vs Sherry
    3. Dougall Vs Ronan/TOD
    4. Keatley Vs ROG
    5. Zebo Vs LOD
    6. Earls Vs Laulala
    7. Hurley Vs LOD/Earls/Keatley

Getting POM, DRyan and POC up to speed is essential, and while the injuries are already starting to build up, LBPs against Os and Leinster will be more than satisfactory, if it sees us moving into 4th/5th gear by the time of our visit to Paris.

It's great though to see competition throughout the squad.

Whilst the H Cup is the priority I'd say Penney will be looking forward to the challenge in the Aviva. Should be a better game this year.

    Aye.
He's only seen sparse crowds and pretty limp atmospheres so far at the Munster games, he may get a shock on Ladies Night

To be fair should have beaten them in the Aviva last year. That French person who reffed the game (trying to be polite here) should never ref a game again for calling the line out only yards from where Earls was in agony on the floor (even I could see him punching the turf from the top of the south stand).

Back on track as they say you cant win a cup early season but you certainly can lose them. Penney is right to crank it up focus really needed in the next four games. You do get the impression with this coaching team that will not be a problem though.

Your right there Donc but thought we were totally outplayed in Limerick especially at the breakdown. The selection
of the back row this time round will be interesting..

Traditionally the "October Carnage" Would suit munster . But we seem to now have a game for all seasons.

Playing a few games is carnage now for pros?

He wasn't talking about it in that sense ( I suspect you know that though). He was talking about it in the sense that the October section of games can potentially define a season.

In fairness playing Racing Metro - a team who have shown little interest in the past in the HEC is hardly the most difficult start.

Still not the point. Lose the 2 HEC games and that is the HEC effectively over .

Indeed, there's nothing positive to take from this fixture at all. They're such a poor side and so disinterested that beating them will be meaningless, whilst losing to them will show just how delusional we've all been to think we were starting to improve. Hell, I don't know why I take an interest in rugby any more, never mind Munster. Think I'll start supporting Manchester United, they seem to win a lot of stuff.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.

Racing will definately be interested, as this is their first game, and it's at home. If they win then they may even send a decent squad to Vicarge Rd.

You need to lighten up mate. Seriously. Try following Connacht for a while and then you'll know what its like to follow a team through thick and thin. I'll refrain from commenting on Munster threads now as its become so nanny state- they now read like a Fine Gael manifesto.

Racing Metro will put out a strong side. They are at home to Montpellier the Saturday before it. If they win that they will put out a strong side in HC and then probably rest half of them for Sarries with Perpignan the week after in mind.
