I have one holiday a year and instead of skiing this year
I am thinking of going to Rome to see the rugby in March,
Does anyone have any advice on accommodation (hotel, hostel, camping), car rental, sight seeing etc.
Are tickets available online at cost or on day of match?
Where do the Irish meet on match day in Rome?

Been to a few games in Rome, but not in last few years. Plenty of accomodation to be found in Rome, but it can be pricey. Some hostel-type places are cheaper. Car rental is easy to arrange and not too pricey iirc (book b4). Tickets used to be available on match day (at a discount!), but I hear most games are now sell-out (Flaminia only holds 30k).
Best Irish pub used to be Fiddler's Elbow (via Olmata, near St. Maria Maggiore); they used (may still?) to sponsor a local rugby team. Druid's Den is another round the corner.

I took the missus to Rome under the guise of a romantic valentines weekend.... till I told her we had to go to a certain rugby game as well. She thought about it for about 10 secs and then relented!
It was a fab holiday. We stayed at the Hotel Ripa on the southwest of town. For food you must go to the Taverna de Mercanti, we ate there nearly everyday, I heartily recommend the roasted quails, if its still on the menu. There's a brilliant gellato (think it was called blue ice or something) and pizzeria place (two seperate premises btw) nearby.
Sights we saw were the Foro Romano, and other general sights. The collesium was closed due to a strike on the day we went to see it, we walked from there to St Peters square but the queue was mahoosive, so we walked back.
Wouldn't bother with car rental in my opinion. Traffic and crazy drivers.... The tube system is in a big X shape, i think, and its pretty cheap. Plus Rome is a pretty nice city to walk around if the weather is nice. We only took the tube on one day which was to go to the match itself.
The only other piece of advice is in relation to the stadium. when we went in Feb 09, the weather was pretty warm, 13-14 degrees each day and sunny, but in the stadio Flaminio, they have scafolding for extra seats and we were seated quite high and the temp dropped when we were seated up there so bring a scarf and gloves and a warm hat.

Car-hire: Don't bother.
Flights: Not going to be easy as it's Paddy's w/e (Did I say that already?!). I'd start looking now.
Weather: Mid March should be nice, Feb can be cold. Was there in mid-March a few yrs ago and it was lovely.
Accommodation: Huge choice - hotel, hostel, apartment etc - too many options to considder really. Have a look at Trip Advisor and a few other sites. Decide if you want a pool etc. Try to stay fairly central, and not out of town. However, the area around Termini (Main train station) has some seedy spots. If poss a hotel close to a Metro would be handy for getting around.
I'd look for sth like this, personally. Good location, decent rooms (Italian 4* is not as good as ours.)

Stadio Olimpico is not far from the old Flaminio stadium, so I guess people will meet in Paizza del Popolo and Piazza Flaminia before the match. Pizza and Peroni before the match...mmmmm! Druid's Glen/rock, fiddler's elbow...ah, just google 'Irish pub Rome' - loads of 'em.

Great advice dont bother with a car they really are crazy drivers. Somewhere I have the info on a limo tour guide crowd who are really good and quite reasonable, we booked them to collect us from and drop us to the airport and also for a days sightseeing. Went to the catacombs, collesium, the midday gun yoke and a tour around St Peters ended it up - long day but fun. They also booked our hotel which was a 4 star somewhere near Paizza del Popolo if memory serves. Got better room and cheaper prices by using them, rooms like a lot of major European cities tend to be smallish. We got speaking to a couple in the bar of the hotel who only had about 0.5m all around the bed (was hard even putting suitcase away apparently) and they paid more than us (our room was a junior suite apparently) so have a look at that option as well perhaps.
If you going to St Peters try book with a sightseeing group that way you dont queue - that being said grossly over rated.
Went with a bunch of lads once and stayed near the train station and it certainly is a bit seedy, second time with she who must be obeyed much nicer hotel. Can be chilly at night but that is just a matter of correct clothing.

Maybe look at combining Rome and Florence. Florence is a great city.

Contact the IRFU or some local rugby clubs. They may have some for sale.

Hi, we saw attractions the Fro Romano and other common sights. The collusive was shut due to a hit on the day we went to see it, we stepped from there to St Peters rectangle but the line was implosive, so we stepped returning.
Did this as well a few years ago, but combined it with a skiing trip in Livigno, you can fly to Bergamo with Ryanair, get a minibus up to Livigno, minibus back, and a Ryanair flight down to Rome. Fabulous fabulous time!
