Ronan was getting knocked away too easily in contact so he certainly needed it, he has all the skills though, will be interesting to see if the change in emphasis from whippets to proper forwards makes a difference in the big games now.

I think it will. Our failures last year (and previously under McGahan) stemmed from getting banged about the place in the big games. The extra beef will stand to the squad this year.

Great result, especially the tries. Three of the five originated in our own half. Leaving aside Murry's which came from the back of a 5m scrum the other four passed through 47 pairs of hands and most of them criss crossed the field.

The average age of the team that started the game was 29.1 and for the lads that finished the game it dropped to 26.3.

So far this season we've used 33 players, scored 9 tries, scored by 8 different players, Keatley scoring 2. It all looks promising, however, in the next few weeks we have 4 of big games in front of us, the first 3 away from home, that would test any squad.

    This drove me nuts.

Butler, TOD, Beta and Ronan have all added size and seemed to have gained some serious confidence from it as they can now carry a ball and not get destroyed at ruck time.

It was depressing seeing the obvious physical inferiority of our younger players compared to the other provinces. Leinster in particular were churning out some monsters and as you mentioned earlier in the thread, our players had a willowy look about them.

But fair play to whoever took them by the scruff of the neck over the summer and made them do their squats and drink their milk 'cos they're gonna benefit big-time this season for it.

Rugby is the most physical game in the world and it's pretty much reached the point where even ROG can't get away without being bigger and stronger than the average bloke.

So it was the players then, rather than the coach as you implied above?

Was that age/development, or a reflection of a conditioning programme aimed at more mobility? There was a lot of talk of players dropping weight for te ELV'a but I never heard that being reversed.

Enjoyed the game Saturday evening was very pleasent at TP. I think we are still getting to grips with the game as Penney sees it and we will continue to have good and bad nights and moments whilst we do. Come next the business end of the season if we are still in the Heino we will be in with a great shout as we seem to have a paln now. God its great to be able to say that after the past few years, what is really scary is that if the Aussies did not come acalling for TMc we would still have him at the helm.

Bet that sent a few shivers down a few spines only came to my mind as I was driving home from the game.

The Dragons are not a good side, but 8 changes from a really good effort in Belfast and we still won handy enough - thats non too shabby at all. Surprised Danny was not mentioned a bit more was a real livewire when he came on almost threw TOD over the line for his try and put in a really good tackle on Tuilagi. Pretty much everyone seems up for it and have certainly bought into the new coaching ticket.

Last season if we were away to the Ospreys, Leinster and a French team in consecutive weeks I would have been cowering behind the sofa. Its going to be a hell of a challenge but you feel confident now we are going to give it a rattle at least. So perhaps next time you are in the bar you might raise a glass to the Wallabies.

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere - but was there a reason why SUFTUM was not sung as planned after the (immaculately observed) minutes silence for Nevin Spence on Saturday?
It was sung (and well sung) at the Leinster game and it was specifically mentioned in the Limerick Leader by the MRSC that it would be sung.....

I'm certainly not trying to stir anything up on such an important matter, but I just wondered if there was a reason it hadn't happened.....?

Was at the game in the East Terrace as usual, my reading of it was simply noone started the song.

Let's face it, during/after a minutes silence, especially about something so tragic like this, who wants to be the first to shout anything. I'm sure there were others ready to join in like myself but noone sang the first words of it and then all of a sudden the game was underway.

Was surprised it didn't happen though, after all the talk. The minutes silence was very well observed as you said, everyone around me took off their hats and stopped talking.

Comments on bulking up very true - noticeable at the U20s on Friday we had several tall lads but they needed more weight and physicality.

Butler and Earls both looked to have put on serious weight. Butler reminds me of a young Leamy. Danny Barnes seems to have bulked up a bit too. There's a fella who'd tackle a brick wall, probably the strongest aspect of his game, would love to see him get a run at some stage this season

Was really impressed with the tackle Danny put in on Tuilagi, actually couldn't quite believe it was him at the time.

On a general note concerning the strength/bulk of our younger players, I remember chatting to Dave Foley's parents at an A game in Belfast three or four years ago. After the game Dave came over for a quick word with his folks, and while he towered above me I remember thinking he was so thin that my head was nearly as big as his chest (although I am big-headed ). He's bulked up tremendously since then.

We watched the game in the dublin Branch Headquarters of Break for the Border. The match was okay to good in patches. For a while I thought we were going to get bogged down in the Scrum again when we broke form the back to put Murray in. the first try was lovely work thanks to Dougie and a clever Zebo. The other exciting thing which was like being at a Christmas panto was the Pass the parcel, all hands on deck try which made for more "oohs and ahhs" than a sex show in Amsterdam.
Youth is raising its head and looking good. Where it was not great game the glimpses of potential and nice bits of work are great for the appetite.

I managed to get into MRSC Dublin HQ for the match as well with a mate of mine who couldn't get over how young Munster were.

Watching Rabo matches is much more fun this year and anything beats watching the Amlin Semi-Final in Break for the Border.

There is a sense of anticipation watching the Rabo matches this year, that we're making the right kind of mistakes and getting better.
