'Immediate steps' to close Irish Daily Star

    15/09/2012 - 19:16:02
The company which owns the Irish Daily Star has criticised the newspaper for running pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge topless and are 'taking immediate steps' to close the newspaper.

Despite the Irish editor insisting that Kate Middleton is no different to any other celebrity, Northern and Shell says it is "profoundly dismayed" at the decision.

Northern and Shell chairman Richard Desmond said: "I am very angry at the decision to publish these photographs and am taking immediate steps to close down the joint venture.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully things will work out. An ownership change may save it - unlike the notw in the uk this was not driven by public anger.

It's nuts if you ask me. You may say printing the pics was in bad taste but that's about it...

The editor said it like it was, what's the big fecking deal??? They're just boobs.... I'm laughing that nobody thinks it's strange that the most photographed woman in the world thought she could get away with sunbathing topless...

Disagree there he said it how he wanted it to be. she was on hols in a private house she may be a public figure but there is a line of decency. It's not like she gave permission for the photo to be taken this was the paparazzi with tele lenses stalking her!

Hate to be the conspiracy theorist but it looks like a very convenient excuse for Dirty Desmond to close the paper down and gain positive PR. Should imagine the "editor" will get some severance package.

I sort of agree with you, whatever about being "in private" in her position she should know that she simply cannot take the chance of strolling around anywhere in the open air like that. I think they've handled this wrong. They should have made the point that the person who took the pictures is a snooping scumbag, papers that print it are showing themselves up and end of, we're now moving on. This suing people stuff is just making it worse.

Listen, I totally agree that she SHOULD be able to have her privacy but that in reality ain't going to happen. She is public property plain and simple.

Re: Irish Daily Star to close

The Irish Daily star was losing money hand over fist. The other half of the venture - INM aka the Irish Indo group has something like half a billion euro debt.

That's not a typo btw. Half a billion.

Have a look at the ABC figures for the Irish papers over the last 3 years. Goosed doesnt even cover it.

Thomas Crosbie Holdings aka Examiner , Sunday Business Post, Evening Echo are even more fubared.

I expect the Echo to be gone within a year, SBP soon after and the Indo in deep doo da unless Dennis backs them.

The old lady of Dame St is crippled with debt and falling circulation as well.

So, the decision to close the Star, imho, was based on nothing more than an obvious oppurtunity to close a business arm losing money.

Kate's knockers are a complete smokescreen.

Bingo, right on the button. Sadly the stupidly of the editorial team to think it was a good idea to print the pics signed the death warrant by giving the majority shareholder the excuse to pull the plug. Wait and see the Christmas Honours list, bet he features.

I may be incorrect but my understanding is that the Star is a profitable business.

An idiot of an editor who must feel pretty fecking thick this morning. He must have known it wouldn't have been looked on well by the powers that be. He can bull**** away about the "Irish" tag buts at the end of the day it's a British owned tabloid.

Far too big a deal being made about this though. The woman herself should come out and say it's just a pair of tits and for everyone to get over themselves. Living off the state and getting her paps out on holidays makes her pretty similar to many of her subjects i'd have thought.

So for those who saw the pictures can you settle a bet for me.

One of us is claiming that the paper would have shown the boobs the other one is saying that they would have put a black box over them like they did Harrys meat and two veg. Which was it?

exactly, it's a simple understanding she needs to gain quickly. It's like idiots saying they should be able to walk anywhere late at night and be safe. Well yes in theory but in reality if you try to act like that you're an idiot.

Hang on a minute, she was topless on a balcony visible from a public place and had her picture taken from a public place.

There is nothing illegal in the taking of that picture, she should know better. In most countries there is also no issues with publishing them but perhaps there is in France.

If you publish a picture of someone without their permission in France then you could be commiting a crime IF that person takes you to court and proves that the pictures diminish or damage that person and that a conviction against the publishers woul not contravene a right to free press under EU law.

Now I'm not in favour of the papps but I would be very surprised if Kate(it has to be her takes the case and not the palace) could get a conviction just for topless photo's. The French attitude to this will be "they're just tits" and the only thing that may go in her favoiur is that they may wish to be seen to clamp down on the papps treatment of the royals after their role in Diana'a death

Ah, but what about bottomless ones? Not that I'm suggesting that Kate has no bottom - she has - look! - and a pretty neat one it is too.

Much credit is due to her loving husband for considerately rubbing some sunscreen on it!

    Mine too.

But what is really behind this. Ddin't that guy make most of his cash from stuff like this and even going farther (he was called a porn baron....)? If he wanted to fire the editor, then he probably has the right, but close the business? Can he do it like that?

    Seems totally hypocritical to me.
