Vorsprung durch Pfennig.
Sincere condolences to all family and friends of Nevin, his brother and father. Tragic loss.
Hopefully we can give a fitting tribute on Saturday night, and show our support for the family and Ulster rugby at this very sad time. I know I'll be singing Stand Up a the top of my voice.
Sad and tragic god rest the souls , if rugby fans do sing SUFTUM this weekend it will be an immense tribute to the spences and the game.
I think that a rendition of SUFTUM at the Dragons game in Thomond on Saturday would be a very fitting show of solidarity with our northern friends.
I was at the match on Friday and it was my first time to visit Ravenhill. I wore my jersey and roared for Munster. We witnessed a fantastic game of rugby. I had some great banter with the Ulster fans and then 24 hours later this happens.
I for one will discontinue using the term 'Todger' on this site from now on.

Absolutely shocked when I read this the other evening. Even being as far away as Oz, I was deeply hit by this news when I saw it. I could hardly believe what I was reading.
My heart goes out to the poor mother and wife that is now left behind to grieve two sons and and husband lost. Just a total tragedy... RIP

Thanks for the sentiments guys - it shows that what unites us is much stronger than anything that divides us, but I don't think that many of us todgers are offended by the name... over time, normal service when it comes to banter will be restored, I'm sure.
RIP
Statement from Johann Muller
On behalf of the entire Ulster Rugby squad, I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Spence family at this time.
Nevin’s loss will be felt deeply by us all. We are equally saddened by the tragic deaths of his father Noel and his brother Graham. The thoughts of every member of the squad are with Nevin’s mother Essie, and his sisters Emma and Laura. We would also like to pass on our condolences to Graham’s wife and children. We wish Emma a full and speedy recovery.
Nevin Spence was a highly skilful and gifted rugby player. He was utterly committed to Ulster and was enormously proud to represent his Province. He was determined to be the best that he could be and I have no doubt that he would have gone on to play for Ireland on many occasions. He was the kind of player that inspired others with his attitude in training and sheer will to win in matches.
His positive outlook on life brought a smile to people’s faces. He was kind, polite, generous and courageous, and we were blessed to have him in our team. The one comfort for us as a squad is that we have each other for support. It has been a difficult time for the players and coaches but I believe that through this tragic loss, we will have a new sense of togetherness.
I and the rest of the Ulster Rugby squad would like to thank the many people who have sent messages of support to the club, not only from within the Province, but throughout Ireland, Europe and the world. It is clear from these messages that Nevin was highly regarded by players and fans of many different sports, in many different countries.
I would like to thank the organising committee of the RaboDirect PRO12 for postponing this weekend’s game with Zebre and for allowing us the space and time to begin to come to terms with Nevin’s loss.
In the coming weeks, the Ulster Rugby team will return to the pitch. Over the course of the rest of this year and in future seasons we will experience wins and we will no doubt suffer defeats. Players will move on or retire and new players will come in and represent the Province. But going forward, at Ulster Rugby, one thing will never change. As long as this great club exists, the person and the player, Nevin Spence, will never be forgotten.
It would have been devastating news had it just been Nevin however for his brother and father to go in the same accident just leaves one unable to convey in words what his poor family must be going through. Its a strange, strange feeling that the last game of rugby I saw him play was the A game on Friday afternoon where he looked like he would be laying down a real marker this year as he returned from surgery.
As mike says there has been an unbelieveable level of support for him and his family across the rugby fraternity, and it has certainly buoyed my spirit, confirms that despite whatever is going on with the world at large that rugby people come together in times of darkness and help one another out.
The idea of SUFTU being sung around grounds really did bring a tear to my eye.
A MODEST PROPOSAL:
Given that our MRSC Choir is, no matter what people think of it and its material, an authentic expression of our Munster fan culture, could it be arranged that the choir and/or the soloist (Jean Wallace or whoever) would begin the rendition of SUFTUM on Saturday evening next, and the crowd to be encouraged to join in, in advance, by the stadium announcer? For the heard of hearing and/or thinking, the words, adapted to 'for the Ulsterman' be put up on the big screen.
At least then there will be no fumbling or embarrassed muted singing accapella by sections of the crowd, but a proper heartfelt rendition of part of the song. Nevin Spence and the family of Irish rugby deserve nothing less than a proper rendition.
A simple clear announcement that the choir would lead a verse of SUFTUM before or after the minutes silence in honour of the deceased player and his family would clarify things and leave nothing to chance.
Just an idea, but perhaps our MRSC representatives could discuss it with the choir and TP management?

Was it 12 or 13 Spence was more known for?? Perhaps starting it in the 12th or 13th minute would be an idea - have it come from the crowd rather than be overly organised

As Red Hand Hero has already written - it would have been devastating if it was only Nevin that would have died in this tragedy - for his father and brother to also die in the same accident is just beyond belief - I can't even begin to imagine what his family are going through right now.
I won't be at Thomond on Saturday - but instead will get to hear the Scarlets' tribute on Friday night here on BBC Wales when they also plan to sing SUFTUM - #RugbyUnited being proved once again across the regions - just unfortunate that it has to be for such a devastatingly awful reason.

Deepest Sympathies and Condolences to The Spence Family and Ulster Rugby. If it is possible to organise SUFTUM this Weekend on a massive Scale it will be a fitting Tribute to Nevin Spence. It will feel as though he is still with us. If we remain as close knit as this Tragedy has brought us, then he will always be.
BBC NI last night mentioned that Munster and Leinster fans were going to sing suftum after a min silence at matches this wkend.

Dreadful news. Awful to see anybody dying in these circumstances. Dreadful when it is three members of the same family.
God bless you Nevin and your brother and father. God watch over the Spence ladies, they've been in my thoughts all week. Rugby seems very incidental at a time like this but it is a sport beloved by all of us and it's through our game that we are able to extend the arm of consolation in our own small way.
God be kind to them all
I am the million man.
Just to let people know - following Thomond78's suggestion that we might send a wreath or make some other gesture, we're working on a mycharity.ie page to which munsterfans (or anyone else) can donate. Hopefully it'll be live tomorrow - just have to check a couple of details with Ulster Rugby first. I'll set up a separate sticky thread once it's sorted.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.
