just watched the vid. that would be pass to LOD would have put him in, if it had been given

Same happened shortly before where coughlan caught the crossfield, and drew

him get away. His pace isn't yet recognized by his team mates.

if you have a fast man outside in broken play, it's sometimes not
necessary to go through with the text book draw and pass..

Watching the highlights there, I stand by my first assertion that a hell of a lot of credit must go to Treviso who defended like demons on friday night. If their heads had dropped they would have been looking at an absolute hockeying, that they kept fighting to protect their line should be complimented. There will be some good teams come up short against Treviso this term.

I think Bosco has put it correctly so far. The first 25 mins of Friday night and the last 50 mins of last weeks game, and it does look encouraging for Munster Rugby right now.
I thought Dougal and Dave O'Callagahan were very good. Out midfiled now gives us options all-over the park. Dougie....it's like having a new signing. I would like to see Luke O'Dea given a run at FB soon, he is a bit small maybe, but would be nice to get a look.
Our half-backs were ok, and to be honest I thought Williams had his best game for Munster, does that give an accurate picture of previous performances I'm not sure, but I did think he was good.
Besides the butchering of certain tires, which will be eradicated in time, I'm sure, the sad thing about Friday night was seeing the limitations of Stringers game. Maybe it was a case of him having his first proper run-out. His passing was excellent, but we made about the lenght of a Major, with 10+ phases in the middle of the field. Treviso knew what was coming all the time, and he didn't vary it one bit. Hopefully he gets better with more game-time, but I have a feeling the game may have moved on for him. I do hope I am completly wrong.

We are a Work In Progress, and I'm not sure that this will be anywhere near complete in 12 months. But I'm really excited and impressed to-date, a thing I haven't been with Munster Rugby since Glaws away in 2008.

Jesus, give it a break. You've got a hard-on for the idea at Earls at 15, and no fact, let alone the other games, will be allowed distract from that. We get it, FFS. Now stop making stuff up.

Treviso are a good sneaky bet for top half of the league. Their results are going to affect the top 4, no question about it.

To say we are a work in progress is a bit obvious, we haven't even seen the first team out yet, nor have we reached our first proper test of the season yet i.e. Leinster. Some parts are encouraging but there are many remnants of the old regime that have to be worked through.

The really encouraging thing is the way they are attempting to play , if you look at all the leagues round Europe you see good passages mixed with some poor play and handling typical of early season. We have been doing the same but without our best players . The Int players will also need a few games to get up to speed so can expect more handling errors, hopefully not as bad as pre-season, as they start to implement the new game plan under game pressure .
With regard to the assessment of Hurley feel that we have to stop looking at players individually but rather as partnerships . There was a back three how did they play collectively ? For me the wings were not getting back alongside Hurley quickly enough to link of him , this is what sets the best counter attacking sides apart along with the player in possession willing to run a line to set up the pass to support . Both Dougie and LOD have been excellent at tracking the running lines of 9,10 & 12 and getting on their shoulders for off loads or inside balls . However returning kicks they have not linked up as a back three to the same degree . Got to give the FB more options including the long pass to spread the play . Still it has been hugely encouraging to watch the ambition & intelligence that has been lacking for the last couple of years .

Ys it is obvious, I must remember that the next time I post.
For my money, we are at a stage of the season, where it doesn't matter what team takes to the field, the structure and the way we intend playing is becoming quite clear as of now. Yes the first teamers are going to make an improvement on the performance, but as I said we seem to have a very attack minded structure to our game.

For me Ulster is the first real test. Yes they have to convince a lot of us that they are a top team now, one swallow doesn't make a summer and all that. But having said that Ravenhill is a tough place to go, and as per usual they will put out their first team against us. It seems obvious to me, that this will be the first "real" test for Penney.

Just sat down to watch the game there. The difference in how our backline/attack is set up compared to last year is amazing, so much more effective. Our skill set isn't up there to match it yet but the best way to improve that is by continuing to play like that in match situations.

Downey is already looking like a mainstay at 12, he anchors the entire backline, he's either fixing two or three defenders to create space outside him or he's bursting through them and making serious yardage.

I've been a big critic of Archer but he gave a great showing the last night. Would be delighted to have to swallow my words in relation to him as the year goes on.

    Great, thanks.

Neither we nor Ulster are in Leinster's ballpark, currently, and seeing as Anscombe is only bedding in his ideas in at the moment, I don't see how we can realistically measure where we are against an Ulster team that is changing as well.

Are you on drugs or what ? This isn't the first time you've read something completely different into what I've written. Let me try and write this in crayon, if that helps.

If you want a benchmark on how we are progressing, Leinster would be it, as Ulster have a new coach also trying bed in his ideas, whereas Leinster are very much the stable entity. Plus, we still have plenty of players to even make their first start of the season. Waiting until October 6, seems far more sensible than judging them on September 14.

Typical, cannot resist the personal jibes.

As you have quiet rightly pointed out Leinster are the benchmark, and are yards ahead of us. So my point would be, that they are not the correct benchmark for us just yet, and that Ulster, as again you pointed out, are in change as well as been HEC finalists last year, are the correct benchmark for the moment. Maybe Leinster can be the yard-stick come the home game in April.

Mctmolloy. That "Earls is a 15, based on one game" drum has been beaten so often by him the skin's wearing out. Coupled with it is a relentless "Hurley's not a 15" campaign that ignores just how good Hurley was last season, and for the overwhelming majority of games this season, that is really starting to grate. I don't mind criticism of a player if it has a basis, but that campaign is baseless.

On this season thus far, Hurley is one of the first names onto the team sheet, and deservedly so.

No argument there, but clearly I was NOT TALKING ABOUT THE

Plenty other posters are wondering where earls will play, so your attack

You've (incorrectly) accused me of being bitter, so look closer to home for personal jibes.

The issue with Ulster is that we don't know where they really are yet, having being somewhat fortunate to have even made the final last year. In any case, we should be judging ourselves against the best, and (cough cough) Leinster are that.

Cough cough, we all know Leinster are the best team in Europe right now.

My point is that maybe too lofty a bar to be comparing ourselves to right now. Maybe you want to, so you can start your campaign against Penney? Who knows....

Ah, so that's it ! You're still sore about your best buddy McGahan ! You're well named

No, as things stand, Penney's previous record gives me hope that he can turn around the mess that the previous regime left behind. He needs a good 2 years before one could make any call on his ability to be head coach of Munster, such is the crap he's been left with.

As for Ulster or Leinster, if you hope to be the best, then you should be testing where you are against the best, not against lesser teams like Ulster. IF we were to well beaten by Leinster in October, you would hope that by the next time we play them, we would have improved. That's a better yardstick.

He got a great reception when he ran onto the pitch, but I thought he played poorly overall. I was disappointed for him as I really want him to make an impression on R Penney & co.

    - The addition of really young and raw talent like O'Dea, Dineen, Williams and even Keatley (in HEC terms).
    - The arrival of a competely new coaching team, philosophy and culture.

So while I understand your disappointment, in my humble view you've got to manage it. This team needs time, the coaching ticket needs time, the systems need time, the young players need support.

Was I disappointed? Not really - I'd sure have loved a few tries, and we did butcher at least one - 2 or 3? in the corner I was in, but this is going to happen for a while.

I just think we need to take a rain-check on or usual level of criticism for a period. I don't know how long that should be for, but we're only two games in. Patience!
Maybe I'm expecting (hoping...?) a lot very soon, but how many times can you say the game is won within half an hour? That is the time you need to up the ante. We won the game and then made a few good chances but never finished 'em.

As for guys coming back - Ryan, Murray, maybe RoG will get straight in. Earls? Where to play him/who do you drop? We don't know when PoC will play, so we'd better get used to being without him (But DoC & Ryan is a fine partnership).

Yes, we now have the bones of a good squad, but we need to be taking the chances we are making. Someone posted that we played a good 2nd half previous week, coupled with a good 1st half this week. A bit simplistic, but generally accurate. What worried me was the level we descended to outside the good bits. Too reminiscent of the last era at times....

I'm a bit optimistic, but also concerned. I know it's early days and it's a big step-up (thankfully....) from the friendlies. Maybe it was the general lack of atmosphere, but I felt more than a bit underwhelmed.

I'll try and be patient..... well, for a week or 2 more....
