Northampton players + social media = PR disaster (sound familiar?)

Think back to the Callum Clark tweet-gate last season, remember the hassle Clark caused tweeting about home decisions?
Looks like Saints did not learn their lesson, and this time it's worse.

This is what he tweeted according the the beeb

"Good luck Mohammed running for Paki... I mean Great Britain..."

Ill-informed and stupid rather than malicious, in my opinion.
On the internet, you can be anything you want. It always amazes me why so many people choose to be stupid.

Yeah I don't think anyone is saying it's malicious. Just dunderheaded thickness from the Saffer playing for an English club, wonder if the irony is lost on him.

True. And it was stupid too. In the sense that we are getting more and more of these types of twitter controversies. You'd think people, particularly with a public profile would think before they tweet at this stage.

Agreed. The problem is that a tweet is instant and global, and many of the rugby players using Twitter are basically rather stupid.

They'd be much better off to keep their gobs shut.

Problem is, JCC, that there is a general breakdown of the concept of "keep it to yourself and don't just blurt it out", allied to a general failure to realise social media are the same as telling the world. It's a general failing; it would be more surprising if it didn't crop up in rugby as well.

Twitter is dangerous though,if your famous and you say something wrong it comes down on you like a tonne of bricks in record time.

From a useful point of view it can help in a very quick time too,the floods in clonakilty for eg. With the equipment that was loaned quickly after twitter made it big.

I agree what he did was stupid but do you think he shouldn't be pulled up on it?

It's amazing that these guys haven't copped on to it yet. They might as well ring the (insert red-top name) newsdesk and have a rant. Same result.

The more I think about it, the more I think he actually shouldn't. My reasoning is:

He wasn't saying anything racist. I believe he was attempting to make a point about a guy who was born in a foreign country (the fact he got the country wrong is irrelevant) representing Britain rather than his place of birth. It may not be a view shared by the majority but I don't think it is in some way morally wrong.

Should players, or anybody, be punished or "pulled up" for expressing a legitimate point of view just because the majority disagrees with it?

Possibly but I wonder if the has passed on that view to Dylan Hartley....

I think Brett Sharman is a typical white saffie Racist stereotype rugby player, & what he said was racist.
He should be punished for it.

    On a completely unrelated note:

    http://www.espnscrum.com/scrum/rugby/story/168867.html

Northampton Saints have announced that they have terminated Brett Sharman's contract.
The hooker was at the centre of the investigation regarding a controversial tweet about Olympian Mo Farah, but the club claim that the reason behind his departure is down to a knee injury. He last played for the Saints back in January but the club claim that "with no immediate prospect of Sharman returning to full fitness the decision was made to terminate his contract".

And I think people are forgetting that "Paki" in the UK can be a pretty provocative and emotive term to use.

What was racist about what he said exactly? I don't see how you can interpret anything he said as denigrating Farrah on the grounds of his ethnic background.

By the way, are you saying being a white South African automatically makes him a racist? Some nice bigotry of your own there Drick. (Of course, it's ok because he's white, right?)

I think its Racist because he used a term "paki" which seems to used by a lot of racists to describe everyone with a dark skin tone.

The history of racism in south African rugby is well known. Yes i made a leap putting the two together, but I don't think its that big of a leap
