    Think I'll disagree with you on a few;

Garryowen vs Dolphin -Think Garryowen will pip them.
Shannon vs YM - Shannon to shock the Cookies.
Mary's vs UL Bohs - Mary's at a canter - Mary's to win but the Robins to come close.
Con vs Clontarf - Cons to win.
Bruff vs Ballymena - Ballymena but again will be a dogfight. Bruff some of the most physical guys you'll play.

Shannon v Young Munster, Thomond Park, 7.30
    Friday September 28 2012

    GAME OF THE WEEKEND

Shannon v Young Munster, Thomond Park, 7.30

IT SHOULDN'T take long for this season to heat up after the fixtures computer threw up the tastiest of ties to open proceedings.

One of three matches tonight, as the league continues to push Friday night games, a big crowd is expected at Thomond Park, where the new-look Cookies begin their attempt to improve on a third-placed finish last season.

They will have to cope with the loss of a host of players due to emigration. Mike Prendergast has had to chop and change in pre-season as he looks to rebuild his team without Willie Staunton, who has moved to Terenure.

His opposite number and former Munster team-mate Stephen Keogh (pictured above) is also dealing with departures and will come up against a familiar face in Gareth Quinn-McDonagh, who had a stint in the English Championship last season and will replace Staunton at No 10.

"Pre-season has been a bit of a rebuilding process after we lost a fair few lads to emigration," Cookies captain Hugh McGrath said. "A derby against Shannon is a nice way to start. Both games were really close last year and there will be fireworks."

As ever in Limerick derbies, this clash will be won up front, where Keogh will look to stamp his authority in the absence of Paddy Butler, who looks like he will be a regular fixture with Munster this season. The hosts should have enough to come out on top in a tight affair.

    Verdict: Shannon

Season set for nights of intriguing derbies

    GERRY THORNLEY

ULSTER BANK LEAGUE: THE ULSTER Bank League resumes for its 23rd campaign this evening and is still not without its flaws. Fortunate that last season’s title run-in came down to a dramatic last day which saw St Mary’s pip Clontarf, uppermost amongst these is the ongoing lack of end-of-season play-offs to ensure a fitting climax for the club game.

There is also the IRFU’s excessive restrictions on provincial players. This has, inadvertently, led to one of this season’s more positive developments. Never has the league had a more lob-sided geographical look, especially Division One A, with a six/four, Munster/Leinster split. But, with Munster also neatly divided into four clubs from Limerick and two from Cork this allows for the advent of 24 Friday night derbies. Indeed, on the Friday night before Ireland host South Africa at the Aviva Stadium on November 10th, there is a full programme of five Division One A floodlit derbies.

With Belfast Harlequins and Dungannon having let UL Bohemians slip past them on the last day as champions of Division One B, as two of five Ulster sides in that second tier, they are also involved in derbies that night, along with relegated Blackrock and UCD. Why, Galwegians’ relegation from Division One B means they too will host Corinthians that night in what will be the first Galway AIL derby for over a decade.

This evening the fun and games begin with Shannon, Garryowen and Old Belvedere hosting Young Munster, Dolphin and Lansdowne. Young Munster travel to Thomond Park for a game which will be televised on Irish Rugby TV having been Munster’s leading side last season under the impressive Mike Prendergast, who will now be assisted by Denis Leamy.

They have lost goalkicker Willie Staunton to Terenure and backrowers Liam Óg Murphy, Rory Moloney and others to emigration, but have recruited well, with outhalf Gareth Quinn McDonagh arriving from Shannon via Doncaster, along with Declan Lavery.

Shannon have also been busy with centre Eric Moloney signing from Dolphin as they look for unity under the reappointed Stephen Keogh.

Garryowen, under the new regime of former players Tom Tierney and Paul Neville, will be interesting. They will miss Neville and Frank McKenna, who has also retired, but have strengthened with the return of Barry O’Mahony, the Connacht duo of TJ Anderson and Matt Jarvis, and Con full-back Seán Scanlon.

Newly-promoted UL Bohemians will also be a very strong side whenever they can line out all their academy, sub-contracted and fully contracted players.

Cork Con, with the prolific Gerry Hurley captain, are due a stronger challenge under Brian Walsh and boast a couple of exotic signings in French outside backs Segere Renaud and Paul Perez as well as Jayde Cruickshank and Graeme Lawson from Zimbabwe.

St Mary’s will not suffer unduly if Hugh Hogan shows the same intelligence he displayed as a number eight in his new role as coach but only Shannon have ever retained the AIL. Lansdowne will again be competitive while Clontarf have moved to solve their outhalf conundrum with the acquisition of Declan Fitzpatrick from Blackrock. Under Andy Wood and Simon Broughton, Clontarf ought again be in contention.

I reckon Shannon will struggle big time this season, it will be between themselves and UL Bohs for relegation.
We (Tarf) never seem to catch a break in Temple hill, havent lost in Limerick in a few seasons but there's a hoodoo over us in Cork and i dont see that changing tomorrow...

shannon will struggle big time this year but i think bohs will surprise alot of teams this yeargood pack and very good backline

  12. #101
Heading across to Templeville Road to watch Bohs and Marys tomorrow. I think we'll run Marys a lot closer than most people would imagine. Bohs have been playing their best rugby in 5 years since last Christmas.
Governments don't ask themselves "what can we do that is good for the people?". They ask themselves "how do we persuade people that what we want to do is good for them?".

Shannon v Munsters goes ahead tonight.

Think both Shannon and Bohs will surprise a lot of those writing them off. A lot of press going around about stuff thats supposed to be going on which isn't. Munsters are an unknown entity as are Garryowen. Could be excellent sides and no doubt both have plenty of potential both might take a while for them to knit. Could be a good time for Shannon to play them with a lot of players back.

that is a big score to wrack up where shannon that poor or was it munsters where very good who played well for munsters?

  18. #107
Shannon were brutal, never looked threatening, was all one out runners going back into YMs forwards. Very poor game plan, very poor display. YM were alright, got turned over a few times in possible scoring positions and kick off receipt were brutal. Mark Doyle was the major stand out at 13, Lukas Kuntz had his best display yet at 12. Great start to get all 5 points. Plenty to improve on with Mary's coming to town next week

  22. #110
5 sec rule working in YM favour with their 13 scoring twice

  23. #111
It was the poorest display I have ever witnessed by a Shannon team. They are a very young side for sure, but whatever the coach is doing with them- it's not coaching. Maybe he had them watching videos of the Lion King or Bambi for the past few months. This is going to get worse for Shannon.

It was such a shame to see the best team in Irish club rugby for yrs being so poor, they looked clueless, personally I felt at the time and still strongly do that Keogh is running that club into the ground and not giving Mossy the job was disgraceful. I think they'll have to get rid of him to have a chance of staying up

The mistake was made a few seasons back, they shafted geoff moylan and have been fupping about since. It,s not Keoghs fault they offered him the gig.

  27. #114
Oh it's entirely the committees fault, getting rid of Colm tucker jnr was the major turning point

Bohs beaten in Dublin 17 14, losing bonus point is no mean feat against the Champs away. Heard was an excellent game! OC with a great start at home against Queen's

Some good results there for Limerick Clubs, was at the OC match they played well in parts, but have room for improvement.
Good home win for Bruff too, Boh's LBP is a good result. As for Shannon, I just don't know. Things seem to go from bad to worse for them, away to Lansdowne next week, a loss there and the knives will be out even more. There are some worrying rumours going around the city about them as well. Some mouth-watering clashes next week Boh's hosting Con in TP, Munsters v Con in TCP, and Tarf host Garryowen. Bruff travel to UCD. OC travel to Cashel to try and avenge their exit in the cup last weekend. Thomond host Barnhall.

So if you're not travelling to Dublin to see Munster, get along to support your local club!
On the internet, you can be anything you want. It always amazes me why so many people choose to be stupid.

Clonakilty drew 13-13 with City Of Armagh in Div 2B. Clon went 10-0 up early on,but Armagh came back and went 13-10 up before Clonakilty got back to 13-13,then threw away a few good chances to win it.

Game stopped for 20-25 mins when the Armagh scrum half was involved in an awquard tackle in a ruck mid ways through the second half. They were worried he had suffered a serious neck injury, thankfully he was released from hospital early on Sunday.

A question on above for those in the know. What are the medical requirements(I.e doctors etc) that a club has to provide for their home league matches?
    Otaga Daily Times 2/5/2012
Taz-Where did you get that information as I have seen nowhere that he(Penney) was ruled out?
Editor - The writer stands by the Penney information.
    Otaga Daily Times 3/5/2012

    - This article originally said Rob Penney had missed out on the Munster coaching job. That information was incorrect.

I think a doctor has to be on scene, with ambulance and paramedics also in the grounds in case of extreme emergencies
