Delighted for Dougie - and for the team - it'll be a good move.
It's also positive that this has been managed well from a PR perspective. A couple of subtle hints were thrown out, RP mentioned the change from player vote to Management selection (with input from players etc), Paulie distanced himself from the role, a few leaks to the press...and then the announcement itself.
This would not have been handled as well last year, and the only change is RP - so AFAIC he gets the credit.
Looking very professional on and off the pitch.
Trust is good; control is better. V I Lenin.
To be fair - on the PR side and keeping things tightlipped, that had improved a lot from the tail end of last season, from the decision on the new head coach to CJ Stander signing and to this. So, I would think that the changes had been in place since before Penney came in , but there's no doubt that his arrival has reinforced things. Very good move giving it to someone of Dougie's stature and that he will (hopefully) be around for all the games this season.
Definitely something positive happening. Even if we don't know when it's happening.
Munster should do what Barcelona did the first time they won the European Cup in 1992. they had to play the match in a horrible orange jersey but changed into their red and blue for the presentation. See here

Wonder what the chances are Dougie will raise the HEC as a winning captain?

Somewhere between one and zero.
“We’re in this mess, not because Fianna Fail policies have failed, but because they have succeeded.” They haven't gone away, you know"
Lets see,
Using your logic first:
- Paddy Power reckon the chances are 1 in 15
- Dougies career has say five years left.
- There is only one HC per year.
- That's a total of five events.
- Divide one in fifteen by five and you get one in three
- That's less than one, so it's not viable.
Using proper logic:
The probability is between one and zero so it's viable.

Don't understand that Piquet. Could you make it more simple?
According to a few quick calculations I made in me brane the chances are:
203.67% to 1

It makes no sense having a winger as captain. He will have to run 40 yards infield to have a chat with the ref.
Jokeshop decision.
He's probably in his last year here at Munster and is trying to come back from a cruciate injury.
Way too much sentimental BS in this decision.
"That's what's difficult. You know that O'Connell is going to be the one that will jump for the ball but you still don't manage to steal it. It's kind of annoying
"I talked about it with the Toulouse players, my final in 2006 and theirs in 2008 against Munster. I was marking Paul O'Connell and they were man-marking him too. We knew he was going to jump. But I remember I was in really good condition, with a good lift, but every time I just missed it."

I realised I was dyslexic when I went to a toga party dressed as a goat
It's not about the position, or sentiment, it's about who is right to lead us into and through an important year where we need leadership and maybe a different voice. A new change for a new season with a new coach.
It's about what player is the right choice, regardless of where he plays.

Stringer is bigger even than his own immense shadow. Pound for pound, he is the best tackler in the world. If you put him into bag of cats he\'d come out without a scratch. He was hit very late for Murphy\'s try. And when he got up, as we knew he would, the crowd cried his name as if he had just fixed the economy.Billy Keane-After Munster\'s famous loss to the AB\'s.

I think POM will turn out to be the best captain we ever have in time. He is like a mix of all the great backrow forwards we had in the past. I do think that given the inexperience and unfamiliarity in the squad we need a cool old head. Ideally I would rather that be in the pack, but Dougie is certainly the coolest and calmest character in the squad. After a hiding like last night, you need someone that has been there before, to cool the jets. I'd like to see POM get the nod for a few Rabo games again like last year to earn his stripes, and then maybe take it next year if Dougie retires.
Just came across this. It appears Dougie was getting some help with his Achilles from these guys

Interestingly a few other Munster players went there too
Inevitable for a back of his age. Same was said about BOD a few years back, and it was true, but it didn't stop him from being the great player he is. Same applies to Dougie. He had a poor game the weekend but as the old saying goes "form is temporary, class is permanent". Doug is class.

Am I the only one who thinks he has not been one of our stand out backs this season, there have been two or thre games where he was our least best outside back.
If he was not our captain, it would be reasonable to play Zebo and Earls on the wing with downey and casey in the middle

Disagree he has had the ball in his hands more this season , the blind side running lines and the tracking runs behind the centers reminds me of similar lines he used to run for the AB'S . The try against Treviso and his support line for the Keatley's try against the Dragons , we did not see those lines last year . He showed good pace for the Keatley try in particular but looked a little slow at the end of the match against O's but that could just be match fitness , Zebo looked wrecked just before he came off . Would need to give him more time and ideally a rest this week he has played a lot after being out for nearly a year . His tackling has been more of a worry but again i feel that will improve as the season progress .
Ya, he DEFINITELY needs a rest. He has played every game so far. Any news on LOD if he will be back in contention soon? If not the logical step is Earls to the wing for Leinster, but that's obviously not the best preparation if he is intended to wear 13 for Racing.
