    Ger Slattery - young munster

See that young munster hooker ger slattery is named in the munster squad for the pre season trip to france. Is he on a training contract or what the contractual situation with him. played with the irish club team previously. Any chance of him making it for the heineken cup

Not on a contract. He has been called up due to injuries and the fact that sherry was back later than the rest due to him being in NZ with the Irish tour and so has only really started his pre season (same reason zebo, for example is not in the squad)

Ger is realistically 7th choice hooker with Munster at the moment (behind sherry, varley, henry, scannell, casey and rael) so it's hard to see anything happening for him here. It's a combination of injuries and guys being rested after a summer with Ireland that's gotten him this chance.
Casey is the only other hooker travelling and he's just back from injury so Ger may well start against La Rochelle. I hope it goes well for him and it could even put him in the shop window for another professional side.

from what i hear he is going well out there they r very impressed with his line out throwing which is top class he had the highest percentage in training with the rest of the hookers there

Ger deserves a break!! For the work he put in in the sub-academy and never make academy was ridiculous! He's been arguably the best club hooker over last few seasons, anyone that watches him when up against Sherry when he's with G'owen, Scannell for Dolphin, Dundon for Tarf, Ger always shines!! I'm not saying he's a better player than these lads, well IMO i think he's at a better hooker than Rael, Scannel and Casey has always outplayed them in AIL, he deserves a shot and hopefully it'll go really well for and will at least stand him in good stead for start of AIL season

Rael is U20 and has played 1 full AIL season. How many time would Slattery have outplayed him? The first time they met at AIL level Slattery headbutted Rael, I wonder will he be headbutting Sherry and co? Or is he a selective hardman?

From what I hear Sla has a short-term traning contract at the moment. I guess the rest is upto him. Personally I cannot see him making a full time contract at this stage, he has had the oppurtunities.

Are you seriosly asking did someone deserve a headbutt on a rugby pitch?

Henry is still totally unproven at first team level so if Ger can show himself in the coming weeks to be a step above the academy lads then he only has Varley and Sherry infront of him. If one of those 2 could get into the Ireland set up then Slattery could yet see a reasonable amount of game time this year I suppose.

That's the possibility, I don't see it as a probability myself. Although Fogs was offered a 2 year deal before he left, we don't need 4 full time hookers. Sherry or Varley are third choice for Ireland at best and will likely go down the pecking order again when Strauss becomes Irish qualified. I have serious time for Scannell too and I think he may yet make the step up before he leaves the academy.

Sorry again, I would have assumed that anyone that was a fan of Mick O Driscoll would have a good sense of humour.

    and here we go again...

Another perfectly good discussion thread about a fringe player degenerates into an off topic slagging match.

And people wonder why some of the better posters just don't bother with this site anymore!!!

Think GS is behind Varkey, Sherry, Scanell and Rael, TBH. Has been a member of a very strong YM pack for the last 2 seasons and still hasn't been the standout hooker on show in the AIL. Think he lacks size and bulk.

Apart from the headbutt, GS is a nice fella, I wish him all the best. Played against his father a few times, good Richmond family.

I don't see him making the step up. His throwing is up with the best. Possibly the best at our disposal. It is very rarely he gets penalised for a crooked throw, which is not something we can say for some 6 Nations hookers. His all-round game isn't good enough in my opinion. His ball carrying is quite weak, and he gets overshadowed in the loose against the top hookers in the AIL.

Still, wouldn't swap him for anyone at YM. The lineout runs like a machine at times and he seems to be a good captain at the club.

EDIT: If he does make the step up, I'll be delighted for him. We could do with his goal kicking as well.

can i ask you to explain where and wen slattery headbutted rael because this is total bull**** and also this is how rumors start because i was at every local ail limerick derby last year and there was no headbutting in any of the games i attended.

I don't remember any such incident either. I do remember a Shannon player sticking a head in him, without being seen, and he got a red card for throwing a punch in retaliation. that's the only bit of real grief i remember him in last season.
We'll have to uncuff him and "de-dildo" him, obviously... Smash up the furniture like he was chasing you all rapey. Fortunately, he's Italian so that shouldn't be too hard to sell.

YM's lineout is excellent, for me i want me hooker first and foremost to be able to throw consistently into the lineout everything thereafter is a bonus. No surprise YM did so well last season, lineout and scrum functioned well and Staunton kicked his goals.

Standout hookers in the AIL last season were Dundon, Sweeney & Slattery. will be exciting to see the two U20 hookers get game time this season.

i think it makes complete sense that the likes of Kilcoyne, Condon, Slattery are brought into the Munster fold, with a new coach taking first impressions these lads stand a good chance. Condon in particular is an incredible prop at AIL level and deserves the chance to step up.
