Recommend a natural feature or historical site on the Cork/Kerry/Limerick borders

Long story short - I've been given the opportunity to send in a photograph to the Ordnance Survey (OSI.ie) for consideration to be used on the cover of Sheet 72 in their Discovery Series of maps of Ireland.

The general area covered is East of Castleisland, Norht & West of Kanturk and South of Newcastle West.

Ideally, I'd like to get something from well within the borders for the specific map, can anyone here recommend something like a landmark, an area of interest, historical site, monument, well, river, waterfall, lake, etc. Note: Kanturk Castle and Ballallia Lake have previously been used.

I really don't know the area very well but was thinking there might be something on the Southern trail on the old railway line from NCW and I see on google maps there's a Lough Gay bog, anyone have thoughts on these or other ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

There was a man called Eamon Kelly born in the parish of Gneevguilla which might be in the area you're talking about. He will be fondly remembered by many, particularly of the older generation as the Seanachai who used to tell yarns mostly on radio. There's a very nice memorial to him in the village and I hope the link gives you an idea of what it looks like. It might fit the bill.

AG, thanks for the suggestion, looking at the village on google maps it looks like it may just be outside the area covered by the specific map that the photo would be used, that in itself may not be a show stoper as they used Kanturk Castle before and that was similarily outside the area.

I was also thinking of Crag cave, not sure where it actually les as regards Map 72, it seems to be a borderline case.

    Any other suggestions?

My take a trip out that way some fine day and have a look around and see can I capture something, maybe the setting sun or such like.

Sorry, didn't see that you'd mentioned it.

There are a number of castle ruins in the area as well. Some are obviously in better nick than others.

Might be worth a pint in a local around Toornafulla to get a local perspective?

I hear that the wimin of Kanturk have lovely natural features.

    On a more serious note..

Plenty area there Paddy Whac. The river Feale looks like a good place to start, glenquin Castle, mullaghareirk mountains, Barna tunnel etc. Also having had a look on the OSI website (historic/new) the mount eagle demense area looks interesting on the brosna > castleisland rd).

I'll be looking out for the new 72 cover.

Good thought,Crag Cave. It's only a mile or two from Castleisland, east I think. Took the lads there a long time ago.Worth a visit.

What about Currow? Isn't that in the area? A composite of Moss, the Doyles,Gallaimh and now JJ Hanrahan.Well, just a thought. Mount Eagle is a kind of Heritage area. You might get some nice views there.

Unfortunately, Currow doesn't fall in that area either.
However, in the interests of supreme diplomacy, how about this modest monument?
It marks the spot where the 3 finest counties in Ireland meet and is in the middle of your map!

Image not uploading from google streetmaps- sorry.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I took a drive out there yesterday and amid some terrible rain and sunshile I managed to get a few photographs. I failed to find the Knockalarig Standing Stones, despite being in the townland, however I got some in a neighbouring townland (Cloghvoula). The lack of signposts for such sites is unbelievable, none for Lough Gay blanket bog either.

Anyway, here's what I think were the best captures, I'll send the OSI the link and they can pick which ever suits them best.

    Again, thanks for your help.
