Seems a brave thing to do. Friends called in on his premises back then on a rugby trip and they sensed all wasn't right.

Suicide is a bigger issue and mostly swept under the carpet or not mentioned here. It's a way bigger issue than road traffic accidents, yet doesn't garner half the coverage or indeed funding.

That's no insult. That's a tribute to real courage.

On which subject, would be good to hear from Buceph, haven't read anything from him in a while.

Any chance we could just call the players by their names?

'Ronseal'. I mean, really? Are people actually going to shout that from the terrace next weekend?

Are we going to have a clamour to re-label every new player we get from now on?

I think its more of a referencing thread LB. So if someone says J-LO mid debate then we know who that is.
Some are more useable, like the Bull, Bear etc

God Almighty, the amount of whinging about a few nick-names that are thrown around the place for a bit of craic is laughable. Relax, it's all for fun and you're not obliged to call anyone anything.

A lot of people don't say ROG or Quinnie for example. I doubt Downey or Laulala are getting all upset and are having a good counselling session with Mr. Penney over a few nick-names being bandied around the supporters forum

Nicknames are grand, if they're good, but some of these are ****.
Ronseal for example, is absolute rubbish, imo. As are the attempts to call Sean Dougal "father ted".
"typo" has to be the worst of the lot though.
We'll have to uncuff him and "de-dildo" him, obviously... Smash up the furniture like he was chasing you all rapey. Fortunately, he's Italian so that shouldn't be too hard to sell.

As Huwie says, this thread is just a reference so that people don't feel left in the dark. It's not intended either to encourage or discourage the use of nicknames, simply a recognition of the fact that people do this and always will. Not all efforts will stick, and I tend to agree that I'm unlikely to start shouting "Gwan Ronseal!" at James Downey, even though it's probably no sillier than "Mushy" or "Toasterhead". But it all seems pretty harmless to me, and certainly not worth getting annoyed about.

Fair point, I think though that the ones that do tend to stick - are the ones given to players by their colleagues or indeed some have had the nickname all their life. PS. BEAR was never a nickname given by the squad to Denis Leamy- no matter what JCC thinks..

agree with this, ones that emenate from the camp are usually more appropriate and will stick as they get used more often in interviews and so on. the fan ones are often thought up by someone who then uses it to death i presume in the hope it will catch on and they can claim resposibilty

I would just like to be able to read posts without wondering who the feck are they talking about when obscure and newly invented nicknames are used to refer to players.

Had to check out the song and found out to my disappointment its from 1996? ........ Couldnt be Danny Barnes related so

Not unless he was a roadie at age 7

There is however, trivia fans, a Danny Barnes who played banjo with a band called the Bad Livers http://www.dannybarnes.com/

the concept of christy dignam baked off his head writing a song for a dreamy 7 year old genius paying his way through college is pretty good though. someone should write a song about that :-)

I'll take a guess and say it was because Stuart Barnes used to pronounce his name oh-Mahone-ee last year.?
