Good on him. Takes a big heart to dive straight back into the rugby world having just retired knowing he could have had another good 5 years playing in him. Hope it goes well for him.

Taz-Where did you get that information as I have seen nowhere that he(Penney) was ruled out?
Editor - The writer stands by the Penney information.

    - This article originally said Rob Penney had missed out on the Munster coaching job. That information was incorrect.

Nice one, hope it's a successful move for him and glad he's staying involved with the game.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.

Would he have gotten a decent insurance payout since he had to retire due to injury ala Simon Best??
Hope it goes well for him

It's good to see him going in at that level and hopefully he can throw the energy and enthusiasm he had as a player into it.

Most of the players had/have income protection policies with Arachas which protects you, if you can't do your primary occupation, for 50% of your Gross Salary(retainer) until you are 35 yrs old or for 3 yrs, whichever is greater. So Wally for example if he had it would have 3 yrs payment to look forward to.Dowling would have been looking at 7 yrs having retired at 28. Arachas are reportedly reducing the cover to one year only, at 40% of salary due to the high number of retirements in recent times.

If you were a cynic you might think that Flannery and Wally retired a couple of months before the ends of their contracts to ensure that they had their claims in place before they were out of contract(and therefore have no income to protect), and took the security of the income protection rather than a contract that might be both greatly reduced in value and duration (or maybe no contract offer at all) given the age and medical history.

Before anyone summons the lynch mob for me for implying a lack of integrity in their favourite liginds, i'm merely pointing out how they could have made the system work for them. I don't know for definite that either or both had the IPP.
