I categorically agree, my problem is that the ones who are deeming him to be the great white hope are probably the same fools wholl tear into him if he isnt spectacular from the off.

I'm of the hope that he will provide some serious ballast to our backrow once management deem him available for selection.

He will have a lot of mileage on the clock after the Currie cup. He played a good bit of the Super 15 in the early stages but once we announced he was signing for us that changed in the latter stages.

All I know is that he is really looking forward to getting up here and is interested in how we are getting on,thats good in itself.I look forward to his debut now with some anticipation, but also with a hint of realism.

The hype that is starting to build up around CJ on here reminds me a lot of a certain SA center that came up north to us a couple of years ago and have we all forgotten how that turned out?

Just forget about the kid for nowand leave him settle when he gets here and work his way into the team. People are making him out to be the Messiah before he has even got here which is hugely unfair on him. Very similar to what we did with De Villiers actually come to think of it.

I agree bok but i think CJ may be different in that he has had v little game time since he agreed his move
to Ireland and may arrive over here fresh and chomping at the bit.. If things go well for him here it would be a huge
boost. Around the hour mark on Saturday it was noticeable how few Munster forwards were able to get over the gain
line. He looks like he would certainly help in that area,

De Villiers was actually a success , considering the ridculous way Munster used him when he was here. In the season he was here, he was our top try scorer with 8 tries. Tells you a lot of how he was used.

Absolutely but thats what worries me. We can all see how a powerful ball carrier like CJ is NEEDED. We are struggling at the minute which is why we are all starting to dream about CJ being our Rocky Elsom. I just hope he is given time to find his feet and settle in before being played and that he doesn't realise how much fate some people are putting in him. He is still only young after all.

A seasoned International like De Villiers failed to live with the expectations that were expected of him in sorting out our midfield and failed to settle in or feel fully comfortable in Ireland. I just hope we learned from that cause CJ looks the real deal and it would be a shame if it didn't work out.

Unfortunately people have a very hard time giving an objective appraisal of JDV because he was here for a disappointing season ultimately. Most can't separate the individual's efforts from the season as a whole.

That is why Halstead and Tipoki are viewed as having almost mythical status, whereas JDV is regarded as a failure (by some).

JDV never settled here. Was never fully comfortable in his surroundings or the team. He also came with a lot of pressure attached as he was expected to immediately solve our center problems. These external influences all contributed to him not sticking around. I am not for a second questioning JDV efforts. What I am saying is that I hope the external influences and the expectations that were involved with JDV have been learned from and won't be repeated with CJ.

I AM NOT having a go at JDV.

I know you aren't having a go at JDV but you couldn't be more incorrect. He was well settled here. He went home to cement a place in the world cup squad.

Melck did well for us when he came over. Obviously he wasn't in the same league as Stander, but if CJ settles in and has a similar attitude he could be a great signing.

We twatted Perpignan away, kept our record at home, and made the HEC semis. I'd bite your arm off at the shoulder for a repeat.

His parents came over for Christmas, and were out in TP on the snow-covered Stephen's Day in their WP gear saying pretty much that. Turns out a friend of mine in Paarl is a mutual acquaintance.

We certainly need CJ to be available for the away match against Sarries. Is there a chance of that?

Currie Cup semi-finals on the 20th October. If the Bulls lose to the Sharks then he will be released. If the Bulls win the semi then the release date moves out to the 27th October.

    Nope.
while he started slowly he showed us how important he was to the team in big matches like peripingan and the gap he left in the team when he left showed a lot of doubters how good he really was... when used correctly.

Its amazing how good an inside centre he was when he was actually used in that position.

(he was also decent at the back of the scrum when Paulie got sin binned against Saints in Thomond).

Came through our own backrow with the ball like a beast. My proudest memory of the man during his time here. Easily forgotten that he never shut the **** up when on the field either, captained the backs without being captain.

Would call him back in a heartbeat.

Absolutely. When he was used at 12 (he was shunted to 13 more than a few times) he was a beast. He could distribute, crash it up the middle and score tries.

    I'd have him back tomorrow.

I'm a big fan of Downey but JDV was a different class, truly outstanding player.

While I haven't seen the Boks play in the Rugby Championship this year I remember him going really well at 13 and as captain during the summer tours.

I was there! Over on holiday with the brother farther down the terrace stood right next to the Northampton enclave. I remember the fog rolling over the top of the East Stand - it was almost hissing.

Yeah sorry - I thought you meant he was in the scrum instead of Dougie. What a night. The crowd already incensed when POC was binned totally erupted like an animal when we won the scrum. One of the best nights at Thomond
