Just five weeks after they played their last game Munster resume training for the 2012/13 season with a get together in Bishopstown, Cork, this morning.
It was a reduced squad, with the internationals missing, that was put through their initial paces by Bryce Cavanagh (Head of Fitness) and included Niall Ronan, Danny Barnes and Dave Foley as well as one of the newer additions to the squad, Sean Dougall.Ronan, Barnes and Foley played no part as they continue to recover from injury that saw them miss the end of last season but all three expect to be involved in pre-season matches.
Dougall pitched up in Cork last week for the first time after spending two seasons with Rotherham Titans and before that Ulster where he played at Academy, U19 and A level.
Born in Scotland, his father is from Northern Ireland and played with London Irish, Dougall's preferred position is number 7 though he is quite clearly prepared to play on the other flank if it means getting his place on the Munster team.
"I always said when I went to Rotherham, I only wanted two years there. Like any player I want to play at the highest level I can. At the start of last season I said I wanted to move on, I want to go up to the next level. So then when Munster approached it all sorta fell in place and I was really happy to have the opportunity.
He only arrived last Thursday and admits that since then he's really only been finding his feet but now that training has started he's looking forward to getting involved and hopefully staking a claim to a back-row berth in the match day squad.
"Like all players in the squad I want to get as much game-time as possible. Without getting ahead of myself I want to play an important role in Munster. I don't want to just come over here for the sake of it. I want to make an impression.
"My ambition is to start with Munster and to be successful with Munster."

What injury did Barnes get that he's still out? He was playing in the B&I final wasn't he?

I wonder what the story is with Howlett.

Dougie was pictured in Auckland with some of the Irish squad last week so he`s either still on holiday and not back yet or only got back recently and taking a few days to get over the jetlag. Not sure how his recovery is going, would be interesting to know.

Any word on Dineen's contract situation?

Is that really Danny Barnes on the left of that top photo? If so, he's filled out a bit. And either grown a few inches or is standing on a box to be the same height as Niall Ronan.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.

Barnes is tall enough. I've met him a few times and he's definitely filled out over the past year and a half. Be interesting to see how he's fixed with a full pre-season and a few months weights.

I've stood close enough to him myself and thought he was about the same height as me or maybe even a bit shorter - I'm 5'10". But that was two or three years ago. Niall Ronan's over 6'. Guess Danny has had a growth spurt!

any of the more visually astute posters want to name the guys in those 2 pictures?

I spy Corey Hircock (in the centre of the lower picture) along with John Ryan and Danny Barnes to the right of the same shot.

What you need to do is call into the vacated offices in UL Arena, all the player stats are on the wall. Makes interesting reading. Borlase is/was the heaviest, just beating Du preeze and BJ. Mafi amount the quickest over 10m with Barnes & Hurley up there

Met him once, he'd be over 6 foot anyway. 6' 3" might be close enough.

Why would anyone, particularly forwards, look cheerful at the first preseason session. It's going to hurt. A lot. And you know it; that's the whole purpose of preseason.
