Good interview. It's been said ad nauseum, but the positivity really is such a breath of fresh air.

Don't get up to too many Rabo games in Limerick but this Friday night hope to be packing the young lad into the car and heading up to Thomond. This guy Rob Penney has me really excited about the coming season, without having unrealistic expectations. There's a buzz around again

The one thing that he seems to have in abundance yet has nothing really to do with rugby is his incredible life perspective. It's refreshing how much he talks about decision making, confidence, group power, focus and all those things are about so much more than the game of rugby. He seems wholly focused on ensuring these men are caring for all aspects of their lives off the field as well.
He's one smooth operator, he talks for as long as people want him to talk, always bright and friendly, cracks jokes. Has this place eating out of the palm of his hand but hasn't really given a single juicy comment about the future intricacies of our playing style.
And we still went out and won a game we were supposed to get tonked in!! I dunno how long the honeymoon period will last but I'm thrilled so far into his tenure, just seems like a pleasant perfect fit.

The players buy into the gameplan and the positivity, the rest that occurs is just a fantastic knock on effect.

Taz-Where did you get that information as I have seen nowhere that he(Penney) was ruled out?
Editor - The writer stands by the Penney information.

Editor-- This article originally said Rob Penney had missed out on the Munster coaching job. That information was incorrect.

Altogether now...to the tune of Jackie's Army
"We'r all part of Penney' army
We are going to win the cup
And we'll really **** them up
When we hit them in the muck
Cos Munster are the greatest rugby team"
"The Munster fans are probably the best fans in Europe in any sport" - John Hayes. 26/12/2011 after his last ever match.
He is one of those people you'd want to go for a beer with! Unless the Munster campaign this year comes crashing down like a house of cards and we get a hiding off Leinster in Lansdowne AND Thomond, I wont be slating the guy
For the most important thing now is for us to build, build and build some more. I am concerned that we seem to be running the ball in front of our own posts a little too much. Care to comment on that Mr Mannix? But Maccer's contribution to the scrum is tried and tested. Axel's defence was watertight last year. This year though we'r leaking like the Titanic. Lineout functioned well enough so far. And Penney seems to rate young O'Dea which I think is great as the young fella could be in green give him a year or two.
McGahan did not understand that this is not Australia and we dont have the climate nor the mindset to play ozzie attacking rugby. New Zealanders have it right by and large so heres hoping.
So sermon over. Keep an eye on where we start playing wide though. The looser we play in the so called "red zone" the higher the chance of leaking penalties or worse.
The rules may have been tweaked, but the underlying principle remains the same now as it did back when William Webb Ellis was in short pants:
PLAY THE GAME DOWN THEIR END

he's gonna be on Off the ball tonight

Dunno Colin, they never give the times these things happen on that show.
rugby is between 8.00 and 8.30 on a wednesday, the football show is from 9.00.

The whole world cries out peace, freedom and a few less fat bastards eating all the pie.
He's letting the media know he's not for turning.
GO ON ROB!! We are all behind you

Well, Mcdevitt wont wander into a soft half baked question with Penney again!
That was a great insight, he's a very articulate man

I got to listen to RP just now. Has a lovely manner, coupled with an unmistakable air of authority.
A great combination imho.

Extremely interesting interview.
If I understand him correctly, he wants the Total Rugby most of us would like to see, however there were some disturbing bits too, that makes me wonder if he actually understood where Munster have come from, why we played the way we did up to 2008 and vitally, what went wrong between 2008 and 2012. It might explain his criticisms of the media tonight.
I think he is mistaken as to what happened after 2008 i.e. because of (iirc what he said) changes to forwards taking the ball on around the fringes, that Munster had to change. The truth is the ELVs were watered way down, but McGahan went ahead and completely changed Munster's style of rugby anyway.
Unfortunately Eoin framed the question quite lamely, which got him a slapdown from Rob ! It was a very frank interview and refreshing compared to the bull**** interviews other coaches would give.
I'm going to re-listen to it again when it's up on the net.
Interview up now. Starts at about 50mins in part 1 and beginning of part 2.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else. Alan Quinlan Irish Times April 24th 2013
I thought it was a legitimate question, nothing half-baked about it.
Seemed like Penney might have been a bit peeved about the way it was framed or he might just have wanted a little more clarity – either way, he answered the question that he was asked, and was allowed to respond in depth and at length. I thought the two of them [Penney and McDevitt] carried it off very well. Good interview.
Good interview from Rub. Very interesting to hear his playing theory, it certainly stacks up with what we've seen.
It seems like the "spread it around securely" idea is there to wear teams down while keeping your options open for any weakness. It explains the forwards on the wing idea too.
To The Brave and the Faithful, Nothing is Unpublishable.
I'm slightly paraphrasing "we had taken the legs out of the defence so they had no energy to defend and thats why we were able to go for it in the last 15 mins."
Penney was very explicit there. I agree with his philosophy given the attributes of our young squad, but has he shown his hand too much to opposition coaches.

Do not try to bend the spoon — that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no spoon.
That's pretty much what he said, but it doesn't really stack up. Embra, from the outset, were the most disinterested/disengaged teams that has ever turned up at Thomond in the HEC.
Penney's line about DOC also had me scratching my head. Why have Howlett or Zebo catching a cross-field kick when you can have a one paced butterfinger lock miss it by by a metre!
