    Penney Appointed

New thread, minus 80 pages of rambling.

    http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/10444.php

Rob Penney was today confirmed as Munster's new Head Coach The 48 year old has been Head Coach of Canterbury since 2006, and last season took them to their fourth straight ITM Cup national provincial title. He also has Super Rugby coaching experience with the Crusaders where he was assistant coach in 2005 when they won the Super 12 title and he has maintained his involvement with the Crusaders as Development Squad Coach. A former Canterbury Academy Manager, Penney will coach the defending World Champion New Zealand Under 20 side during next month’s IRB Junior World Championship in South Africa, and he is expected to arrive in Munster in mid July for the start of a two year contract subject to obtaining a valid work permit.
Anthony Foley will continue on as Forwards Coach while expected change in the rest of the management team will be finalised following consultation with the new Head Coach.
Commenting on the appointment Munster CEO Garrett Fitzgerald said, " We conducted a thorough search to find a replacement for Tony McGahan and were delighted with the calibre of the candidates. Rob Penney's record speaks for itself and we look forward to welcoming him to Munster.”
Penney leaves Canterbury with reluctant best wishes according to Canterbury Rugby Football Union CEO Hamish Riach, “Rob has been a great servant for Canterbury rugby. We are very sorry to lose a talented coach, but this is a fantastic opportunity for him and we wish him all the best.”
"We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven into an age of unreason if we dig deep into our history and remember we are not descended from fearful men" Edward R Murrow

"Little by little, we have been brought into the present condition in which we are able neither to tolerate the evils from which we suffer, nor the remedies we need to cure them." - Livy

Question to be asked is what is the minimum expectation from Munster now next season?

  6. #4
Joking aside, can anyone say what his rugby philosophy is? I've seen the comment his teams vary from year to year depending on their strengths but does he have an underlying philosophy? Schmidt (famously) said he wanted to make Leinster into the best passing team in Europe, what would Penney say?

At least he's a proven winner, a good place to be starting from.
It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.

For me, knock-outs in the HEC and Pro12, win the interpro's and hold onto the B&I Cup, as a minimum.

People will probably say "why the B&I Cup?" but we've had the best A side in Ireland for three or four years now and we need to keep that standard up so we can bring in new players over the next 24 months.

Rock solid set piece, tough defence, straight running in the back line. If we can achieve those things the wins will come.

I'd go along with that. To add, he has a reasonable rebuilding job to do, both in terms of players and a different coaching style to impose.

I'd hope that both the brains trust, and us, the fans, give him the time to do it.

Now that Penney is copper-fastened, Munsterfans scramble to coin a new phrase to describe the style of play we expect.
It should be slick though, especially with the Axel grease...
This is an excellent dividend and we await patiently for the spare change to be counted on the coaching ticket.
FINALLY, Munster Rugby make what looks like a great decision, despite wanting to continue with the McGahan disaster years of failure. We can face next season with a happy heart.

Penney has an excellent track record on a number of levels, but clearly will want to prove to the NZ public that he was badly treated by Hansen and Tew when it came to being given an S15 team. There are a lot of plusses with his appointment, which should start with mcgahanball being consigned to the bin, but also it will give Axel another perspective (better) on coaching and what it takes to be a head coach.

As for what to call his rugby.... moneyball ?

He has as long as he needs. The tenets of his game are akin to ours, we'll buy into that, he appears to be a fella wants to play the game like we want to play the game.

Posters on here ned to give him space and time to do it - some Leinster fans were calling for Joe S's head after 3 or 4 games

Great appointment. From what some bloggers in kiwiland are saying, political issues are the only reason he didn't get a big gig since being assistant with Deans at Canterbury. Have a very good feeling about this. It's also good to see Munster rugby conduct such a strong appointments process. Also good to see that they realise and see that some change is needed in the set up, and i think a few new voices along with Penney could help us iron out a few issues regarding the training and academy set ups. He should also drastically improve our quality of signings i'd say, and with a project slot to fill that could be a big one. With Axel in there, i wouldn't worry about the old Munster tradition being diluted.

    Irish Times state this:

"Anthony Foley will continue on as Forwards Coach while expected change in the rest of the management team will be finalised following consultation with Penny."

I think that's good news too. He knows what he wants, and might have some very good ideas about guys to bring into the set up.

The new coach is a Cantab, and therefore - if only barely - a Southern Man.

I am both angered and disgusted. How could the brains trust do this to us. What an awful, awful decision is was......
    ....................
    ........................
    ................
    ....................
    ..................
    .............
.................to let Peter Borlase go the month before appointing the one coach who could get him to play!

In all seriousness though, delighted wih his appointment I really am. I think the time was right for an outsider. No ties to the current team. No opinions of the current players. Completely new slate for everyone. He might see something in a player that we haven't seen before or spark a new sense of life into someone we had previously written off.

Genuinely excited for next year now. I can't wait. I really hope everyone gives him space and is patient. I've pointed out before the daggers that appeared in Dublin when Schmidt got off to a rocky first few months in the job and look at him now. That was a coach taking over from a team at the top and on the up. Penney is coming in at a relatively low ebb and at a rebuilding stage. Give the man the time to breathe and lets see where we are in a year or two.

Welcome the Munster Mister Penney. Let the newest adventure and journey begin. Lets hope you give us some enjoyment and we return the favour to you by the bucketload.

    GWAM MUNSTER

Can't say I knew anything about the guy prior to all this but seems to be very highly regarded down south and has suffered due to politics so happy he in coming our way, fingers crossed he hits the ground running and can bring over a decent young project player for us!

    Exciting times ahead for all.

Well, Congrats on the appointment, His been working in some good positions so he should have good experience. Lets hope he has the nads to be his own man.
I'd get rid of the two training locations for a start.
Vital that he gets a good backs coach.
Lets hope the powers that be and the fans give him a chance, Patience and financial resources required

Remember Joe lost his first three games with Leinster.
When their numbers dwindled from 50 to 8, the other dwarves began to suspect Hungry
