Thread: Gavin Henson

    Gavin Henson

OK so with both cojones in his hands he jumped off the cliff and with his first post he suggested...............?

Mad and all as it may sound at first, Munster need Centres and Henson needs a home.

Henson also needs a change of culture, a change of influences. We need a greater cutting edge in the centre to give Earls the opportunity to develop even further.

Granted, it would either be the making of Henson, or a complete disaster but it's worth considering for a moment.

If it worked, though, we would get arguably one of the most talented centres around (and he can placekick). I saw him make some wonderful offloads at Toulon and run some great lines.

Munster need only offer him a contract to the end of the season and suss him out. See if there was any way that it might work.

I know that die-hard fans are now choking into their pints but sometimes a bit of lateral thinking can bear unexpected fruits.

Presumably Cardiff registered him for HEC this year so we'd be bringing him in exclusively for Rabo.
Next year which of our NIQs would we drop for him: BJ; WDP;Dougie or his former teammate Lualua?

Some people are not cut out for team sports no matter how talented they are. Gav the chav is one of these - he has the sort of toxic personality that will always rub people up the wrong way and cause disharmony in a squad. He is capable of starting an argument in an empty room. I heard an interview with Jamie Roberts when the chav signed up for Cardiff. Roberts always strikes me as an affable level-headed kind of guy but when asked on-air how he felt about his new centre partnership with Henson he declined to comment for fear of causing offense.

Sacked Gavin Henson still has a lot to offer, says Lyn Jones

Gavin Henson has plenty more to offer as a rugby player despite his sacking by Cardiff Blues, according to former coach Lyn Jones.
The Wales centre was dismissed by the Blues on Monday for alcohol-fuelled misbehaviour on a flight from Glasgow.
And London Welsh coach Jones, who worked with Henson at the Ospreys, told BBC Wales he could get the best out of the 30-year-old.
He said Henson, and others, needed to learn to deal with alcohol.

“Gavin needs an environment where he can be trusted...and helped to the next level. I'm unsure whether there are many sides still with the patience to offer that olive branch to him. ”
    Lyn Jones London Welsh coach

"I think he's still got a lot to offer," Jones said.
"Gavin needs to go into an environment where he can be trusted and left alone to play and to be helped to the next level.
"I'm unsure whether there are many sides still with the patience to offer that olive branch to him.
"What life and coaching is about is dealing with people and dealing with their egos and giving them the best environment to come through and to perform on the field.
"I think I could do that comfortably for Gavin or any player.
"I have no issues at all with Gavin Henson. I think he's a very sweet and polite gentleman and I think he's just suffered on this occasion for being Gavin Henson."
Asked whether London Welsh would be interested in signing Henson, Jones said the English Championship club could not afford him.
Jones, who coached Henson at the Ospreys between 2003 and 2008, believes the Cardiff Blues have set a precedent by sacking the former Saracens and Toulon player.
"I think they [Blues] had many options open to them to deal with this any way they like," said Jones.
"I think they've set a precedent for themselves and a dangerous one.
"All young rugby players get into a bit of bother from time to time and they've set a precedent now that this is how they are going to deal with it.
"I can assure you I've got many stories of many players, better than Gavin, when they've been in a spot of bother.
"Alcohol is a very potent drug. It's the scourge of society, not just sport, and lots of people get into a spot of bother when they're under the influence."
He said Henson was obviously "a different fella to what he can be" when alcohol was involved.

"He needs to learn that, and not just him, but all young players and people. He's a grown man and he should be able to deal with himself by now.
"But at the same time, people drinking alcohol at seven o'clock in the morning or whatever time it was is certainly not acceptable in a professional rugby environment."

Munster has an ethos of honest, hard work and team first. Henson wouldn't spring to mind when describing that ethos. Over the years, we have had players with less talent, but because they bought into the ethos, the sum became greater than the parts. When you get guys like Howlett, who have buckets of talent and also buy into the ethos, you see the benefits that brings. Talent alone won't get you far in a team sport, if the work ethic isn't backing the talent up.

We've already had a Henson for Munster thread the last time he was sacked by some club or other (Toulon, I think).

The reason for that thread was that a lot of us, myself included, thought it might be the wake up call he needed and that Munster, with its ability to find players with something to prove and use for their benefit, might be a good fit together.

But it wasn't a wake up call. In the space of a year Henson has been ejected from the Top 14, the English Premiership and the Pro 12.

Why would any busy manager ask for that much trouble?
For the over the hill and the past-it, nothing is impossible.

Henson would'nt last ten minutes at Munster......his card would be marked before he got off the plane

In fairness if Munster signed him they would have enough smarts to tell him to take the ferry over and stay away from planes. AFAIK it's about the only mode of public transport he hasn't managed to get into trouble on.

He was a Lions centre, 7 years ago, he hasn't been at that level pretty much since the day they got on the plane back really. In this case, for me at least, the old past performance is not a guarantee of future etc counts as much as what he managed to achieve 7 years ago.
