New Coach Penney appointed # 2376

What are your ideas about new coaching set up for next year. I don't think they can put Axle in there yet. Would love to see him stay in charge of defence/forwards. I could see Jim Williams coming back as head. He is finished with the wallabies this summer. A Munster man at the top sits well with me. Add a good backs coach (sorry jason) and we are laughing. Who would you like to see there????

Jim Williams and David Knox, lets him walk the walk!!
I don\'t really understand the criticism of their so called ugly rugby.I love open running rugby but I also admire the collective mastery of this Munster team. They really are a reference in the game,to beat them you really have to play a perfect match

A joint coaching staff of everyone here on munsterfans is obviously the solution.
Before you judge a man walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? He`s a mile away and you`ve got his shoes!

Yeah sure Jim Williams, that would do it
Another ex player ( a good one though )
    A failed Aussie forwards coach.
Maybe munsters next sponsor should be lidl, as every signing apart from BJ is bargain basement.

Saw EOS in limerick few weeks ago. Probably discussing his options. Known knowns. Unknown unknowns, that sort of thing to chew the fat and mull it over and mix a few metaphors into the proverbial contract on the table, or the bar as it were...

As I said on the other thread, I think there are 3 options

    1. Give the job to Foley now.

    2. Get an elderly statesman type Head Coach in for a year, before handing over to Foley...someone of Graham Henry's stature.

    3. Get a top notch Head Coach in and let Foley wait 3 or 4 years.

As the latter two choices would mean the outlay of serious money, potentially, and the likelihood of the IRFUs wish for a future native Irish coach, this could be Foleys moment. Considering the effect he has had on Munster this season, Foley may as well be Head Coach. It is well known in rugby circles that he is his own man, unafraid to make the hard calls.

We do need to get away from an Australian influence which has been in Munster for the last decade. If it is not to be Foley, then a no crap NZer would do nicely.

I also hope that the senior players behave properly and keep their own counsel with regards to any attempted coronation of a new coach, unlike last time.
    It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new Head Coach, and I'm feelin' goooooooooood !

If it isn't going to be Axel, then Nick Mallett would be a great addition for the head coach position, the H Cups would be around like buses. Munster have often gone for the big name players like Cullen, Howlett etc., why not the coach ?

He's been linked with the England job, but why anyone would want it is beyond me.

As I mentioned in a previous thread.........Onto McGahan's replacement...............Bradley and O'Shea tied up in contracts and are non runners. EOS's name flying around and hopefully we have the sense not to take a step backwards and appoint him. So who does that leave?? All the usual names have been mentioned so I won't go back over them. Here are a couple of outside choices that I'd consider.

    1) Pat Lam - Didn't ahve the best of starts with the Blues when he took over missing the play off's in first 2 seasons but got them to semi final's last year. Signing of Nonu and Weepu this year (not sure how much input the head coach has in signings in Super15). Appointed Jeff Wilson as backs/skills coach. Is highly regarded coach in NZ already. Has experience of NH and ERC rugby from his time with Northampton. Lam head coach, Foley forwards coach, Dougie/Wilson backs/skills coach, McQuilkan defense coach, Payne manager

    2) Fabien Galthie - Won 2 French Championships and HEC runners up with Stade Francais as assistant and head coach. Led Montpellier to Top14 final last year with an inferior squad/budget to most of the other 13 teams. First year in HEC with Montpellier and drew with Leinster. Galthie head coach, Foley forwards coach, Some frenchie as scrum coach, Dougie/frenchie as backs/skills coaches, Payne manager.

I know some of you won't want to see another 'old boy' in the coaching role but Munster and the senior players have always preferred it. Jim Williams fits the bill here and with axle still with a hand in the forwards it wouldn't be so bad. I wouldn't mind seeing axle getting back involved with defence. When fisher was mucking around with the forwards we at least had one of the best defences in Europe. Above all we need a top backs coach.

The problem with bringing anyone in as head coach is that everyone (even Hugh Farrelly) knows that the IRFU have Axel earmarked as a potential future Munster and possibly Irish head coach. Are any of the big names being mentioned going to be interested in a short term gig purely to mentor Axel and develop him for their own job? Would anyone from the SH be interested in moving their entire family to Munster for what could be a short term (1 or 2 year) deal.

McGahan to leave Munster at end of season

    Wednesday, February 22, 2012 - 07:32 AM
Munster coach Tony McGahan will leave the province at the end of the season.

According to reports McGahan has been offered a coaching role with the Australian set up and informed his players and staff in recent days that he will be departing.

During his time in charge Munster won last year's Rabo direct Pro12 and this season reached the Heineken Cup quarter-finals after winning all six pool games.

Antony Foley , Eddie O'Sullivan and Wayne Smith are amongst those being linked to the vacancy.

Gotta agree Jim Williams has to be the man. he was a good solid munster man during his time as a player & coach here, has been well blooded by Robbie Deans (the best coach in the works according to many Kiwis) which will stand to him. Keep changes to a min so Keep axel as forwards coach, premote Duggie to backs/defence dont rock the boat too much. Is it possible that munster have picked their man already, and he has already been consulted on recruits or have the 2 signings for next tear just been McGahans choices??

Munster is a big opportunity OTHP. We'll be even stronger next year. If somebody came in and won the HEC in the next 2 years they wouldn't be shown the door.

If Axel will be ready a year from now then he's ready now. Not too many top class coaches would come to be seat warmers. A pity that MCG wont stay one more season but the die is cast

Give it to Axel and let him choose (or make him choose) a solid ticket

Head Coach - Point (Nobody we get in will be good enough anyway)
Backs/Attack - TWIB (Career blighted by injury, surely has enough nous to pass on his trade, also has this carefree attitude that could see our backs run wild)
Fwds - Mack the Knife (cantankerous and snarly as phuck)
Defence - Scotscor / T78 (Never get anyone else's opinion, and are stubborn in defence of their own)
    PRO - Sewa (enough said)
Player Recruitment - Dumptruck & M4ever ( Dumptruck for the shed and M4ever to ensure we carry on the tradition of signing a few lemons.)
Team Manager - John Cooper Clarke (Great for the grammer and spell check, and at keeping everyone's expectations on the ground)
Jersey and Sock choice manager - Lactose Intolerant (For the Lardigan)
Journalist to have in the arse pocket to feed stories to - McCloud ( Awesome at the Copy and Paste)
