The fewer Irish players on it the better for me. If some of the Irish players suddenlly turn it on next year, then I would think there would need to be serious questions asked about their commitment to the green jersey.

Surely Gatland will go with Priestland at 10?
It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.

Possibly. i doubt anyone wants a Lions series to be hanging on Sexton or Flood kicking either.

entirely possible the lions wont have a 85% kicker at 10. Halfpenny will have to start by the looks of it.

Don't know how you can pick a team with over a year to go!

However going on things today and looking towards 2013 I reckon David Denton and Ben Morgan will be strong candidates for the number 8 jersey. If Tom Croft goes on the tour I will laugh my ass off! He is muck!
I've seen better centres in a box of Black Magic

Any one of Kearney, Halfpenny, Foden or young Hogg could make a very good Lions Test full-back. Not to mention the possibility of someone else making a breakthrough between now and then (I'm thinking of Felix and Mike Brown at 'Quins, but the men above are way more likely). Alongside the likes of Medard and Masi (and Poitrenaud!), there's a serious glut of top-class full-backs in the NH these days.

Assuming Gatland's Welsh team will more or less be picked en masse possible young (ish) bolters include - Hogg, Denton, O'Mahoney, Jones, Zebo, Barritt, Farrell & Morgan.

European Cup rugby meant something to McGeechan bit I doubt it will mean anything to the Welsh manager.
For the over the hill and the past-it, nothing is impossible.

Amazing how opinion change so much! As they will do for the next year prior to the trip. Above is what I'd go for now. One bolter in from Holland!!

From the Irish I'd go as follows..........
Nailed on: Sexton, Best, POC, Ferris
Almost certs: Kearney, Bowe, BOD, Healy, O'Brien
Has a good chance: Earls, Murray, Heaslip
Could surprise a few people: Fitzgerald, Donn Ryan, Strauss, POM
No chance: Trimble, Darcy, ROG, Reddan, Ross, DOC, Wallace

I think D. Ryan has a great chance to make the Lions team. Sexton is in with a shout too I reckon. I wouldnt dismiss ROG just yet.

Agree DRyan has a great chance of going as second row/back row cover. Although Tom Croft might be ahead of him as he's played second row but coaches might see hm purely as a 6.

I must say ROG has absolutely zero chance of going in my opinion. They'll bring 2 OH's and one 10/12 I'd guess. That'll be Sexton, Priestland and Farrell. Can't see anything different. If they want an older head as a third OH he'll have Wilkinson ahead of him (if fit)

Sunday Telegraph is reporting that the Lions have offered Gatland the job and are talking to him about getting time off from WRU.

It is almost certain that Gatland will appoint his Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards and England’s forwards coach Graham Rowntree as part of his Lions coaching team
    , the paper says.

Strong chance POC will be the only Irish starting forward with that coaching team.

D Ryan wont make the test 22 in my view with POC, Gray and Charteris. I'd have him ahead of Charteris every day of the week but Gatland wont.

POM could be a bolter for the bench at 7 if they go that way. If Warburton is fit he'll start.

After our 6 nations they'll go with Wales and England like they always do with Stephen Jones in the Times picking the team for them.

Joke not to have even one irishman involved
