    Club versus Country

It's become topical again given the success of our clubs in europe versus our floundering national side, especially when comparisons are made with the Welsh who seem to operate in reverse.

For me Ireland is the be all and end all, Munster is important yet secondary to my country. Perhaps its my Mayo roots and a feeble attempt to cling to that one part of my heritage that has a slim chance of actually winning something but it would strike me as strange if lads were having problems being motivated for their country. I've not seen any specific evidence and think its a load of horse **** but its being talked about nonetheless by the media.

The players will tell you it's country. I understand that (I'm not 100% certain they are all telling the truth when they say that or if they are just being PC - this would be rare though and I believe if it were me - my country would of course come first). I understand why playing for your country trumps playing for your province / club...
It also seems perfectly legitimate for a fan to have your local team winning silver trump the country team success. I often just pray the Munster players come home uninjured from this international side show. Sure I'm happy when one of our guys wins a cap. Happy for him, not for "us". I'd be happier if he was out of harms way while there are important things like Munster competitions to be taken care of yet...

Its always a tough one but I would fall on the side of Munster, its the same with the local GAA club at home; would I rather they win a county over Cork and AI and it would be club each time. We support Munster almost year round (close season obviously not as much) whereas the Ireland situation really only crops up once a year competitively.

Unable to differentiate two completely different contexts that are not even close to being analogous I see. How irrational of you.

Munster. Ireland is a nice distraction but losing the quarter final to Ulster will hurt more than any Irish loss this season.

    Ireland, always.

Leinster second, Irish provinces vs non-irish 3rd.

Didn't have any say in picking the country that I was born in, so that's an apathetic meh to the green monkeys.

Did pick the provincial team that I opted to support - so it's go you Globetrotters!

This thread goes some way to show why Ireland is where it is, rugbywise. And people are surprised we lost to Wales on Sunday and in Wellington?

because ~60% of supporters on a discussion forum for supporters of a certain team plucked for that team over another team?

Make that pleasantly surprised rather than merely surprised, old bean.

I had thought that Kidney's Ladybird Book of Man Management Skills included two full chapters on "Optimising the use of Revenge as a Motivational Tool". But perhaps he couldn't get the e-version to download onto his Kindle last Sunday morning.

Dowlinz, good poll based on a good question. Trouble is, I don't think too many people here read the question properly.

After thought, I answered province, because if Munster wins the HEC, I'm probably more likely to have been at most of the matches, including the final, which is a winner take all match. So, winning that would feel pretty important.

So why not Ireland winning the 6N? Because, in all honesty, Munster winning the HEC feels more important to me. If the question was worded " ... more important to Irish rugby?", then I would have answered Ireland.

And there could have been other ways to word the question.....and so on.

    Read the question!

If the provinces couldn't beat their way out of a brown paper bag I think the results could be very different
