Penney said: “We don’t know (if Paul O’Connell will make the game with Ulster). He will be ready when he is ready. He is under no pressure. We are under no pressure to get him right. There are a number of boys in that bracket. He is probably not doing all the rugby stuff yet, but at times he is close.

This reminds me of the way Wally was talking.

Beware the prophets of DOOM!
In his TV3 interview Penney sounds quite relaxed about POC. If there was a serious worry he'd have been more vague. It's looks to me that there is an issue with the knee BUT POC could play if required. But they want to give him more time to lessen the chances of any flare up. It's not the same as Wally who was never near playing - was brought back after long rehab to see if that would bring things on but actually proved he was gone.
well looka
I really hope so. It would be the best thing to be careful. I am sure they have learned their lesson. It's just a scary thought and hard to not think the worst.

Sounds like RP wants what is best for POC in the medium to long term, as one of his fewish truly world class players. POC has shown incredible determination to come back ion the past but may not always be his own best adviser, and RP seems strong enough to say 'No, Paulie, not just yet'. Handling it right. Think that usual hype/pressure on Munster, having dwindled a bit in recent season or two, is lifted a lot now as basically nobody knows what to expect.

I am back in my earliest childhood memories this week, like waiting for Christmas and Santa when 6, waiting for kick off at TP on Friday. Am avoiding fizzy drinks and red Smarties just in case it all becomes too much.
Two more sleeps!

Penney has no date for O’Connell’s return
By Simon Lewis
Thursday, September 06, 2012
The date of Paul O’Connell’s return to competitive rugby is still unknown after Munster head coach Rob Penney admitted he did not know when the Ireland and Lions lock would be ready.
O’Connell, 32, was believed to be on course for a first game since May 5 when he aggravated a knee injury against Ulster, against the same team at Ravenhill on September 14 in round three of the RaboDirect Pro12.
Yet, a week after team manager Niall O’Donovan declared O’Connell "on schedule for Rabo 3", the second row was a spectator in Limerick yesterday as Munster trained for tomorrow’s game against Treviso at Thomond Park.
Asked about O’Connell’s absence from training and a possible return date, Penney said: "We don’t know. He’ll be ready when he’s ready. He’s under no pressure and we’re under no pressure to get him right. There are a number of boys in that bracket but Paulie will let us know when he’s ready to go and we’ll react to that. He is probably not doing all the rugby stuff yet but at times he is close."
Nor is there a clear indication on the extent of utility back Johne Murphy’s ankle injury, suffered in club action for Young Munster last Friday, when he limped off after 20 minutes of their Limerick Charity Cup semi-final win over Garryowen.
"Johne is still pretty sore from the weekend," Penney said. "I haven’t had a full download from the medics yet but we don’t expect him back tomorrow or next week. But he won’t be too, too far away."
Better news for flanker Niall Ronan though, out since January following knee surgery, as he was cleared for a return with Shannon this weekend.
Penney said: "He has had a wretched run and a couple of little set backs along the way, but he looks like he is in a really good space and it looks like he is ready to go, which is exciting for all of us."
Meanwhile Munster’s Heineken Cup pool match at Saracens is set for Vicarage Road, Watford, the north London club has announced. There had been speculation that ambitious Saracens were planning on staging the tie at Wembley Stadium, as they had done in the past two seasons when hosting pool games with Leinster and Ospreys.
Yet having already switched one home pool game, with Racing Metro, to Brussels, Sarries have decided to keep their other group encounters at the 18,214-capacity stadium shared with Watford FC. Munster, who open their pool campaign with a trip to Stade de France to face Racing Metro on October 13, visit Vicarage Road on Sunday, December 16.

Thought i read somewhere that POC said he was a couple of weeks behind the INT players at that time because he had not started running yet . Dragon's next week or more likely O's away .
Poc is a bit off yet,but no one really knows how far except POC+management really.

Latest I heard on POC was that he's hit a bit of a wall in terms of how much he's able to do. Theres been quite a few set backs along the way. I think its safe to say that both Munster and Ireland have been extremely hush on the whole thing. All that has been released is that it was a Medial Ligament Injury but there was nothing on the amount of damage done. Dont know how much rugby he is going to play this year but Id expect when hes fit he will be made available even less than usual.
4 weeks out for Johnne according to his musings on the twitter machine

I look back on 2008 at the Millennium Stadium as the highlight of my career because, although being capped by New Zealand and playing for the All Blacks was fantastic, this was special. - Doug Howlett
Let's not forget that there was the very real possibility that he was going to be heading down to NZ for the Ireland tests, a few weeks after the Ulster game. Now, 4 months later we're being told that he's still not ready??? Is his injury therefore cruciate related, because a knock on the knee doesn't take 4-6 months to heal. A 2nd mis-diagnosis on POC would be shambolic.
