The physio first on the scene deserves huge plaudits. Protects the stricken player from the deserved melee. If someone did that to one of my own id give him a ****in dig as they did. It was a horrible cowardly hit

God, I hate arriving to work in the morning to see this thread on the top of the pile.
Clicking in fills me with dread only to find out it's not to do with Munster players
O'Connell admits to injury setback

RUGBY NEWS: MUNSTER CAPTAIN Paul O’Connell has revealed that he faces a battle to be ready for the start of the new season as a troublesome knee injury takes longer than expected to recover.
But while he may not be ready for Munster’s three pre-season games next month – they travel to play La Rochelle and then have encounters with Bristol and London Irish in Musgrave Park – he is hopeful that he will be available for the start of the new campaign under the guidance of Rob Penney.....

Isn't Paulie barred from playing until Round 3 anyway as he is part of the Irish training set up?
Would have been handy to get him involved in at least 1 pre-season game alright though

think he might be separate from the rest of the Irish Ints as he was injured at the end of last season and didn't tour. It would depend on instructions from Deccie.
Also heard that Cathal Sheridan is going for knee surgery but not sure if its true or and if it is true how long he would be out for.

There are different tackling rules for league and if Young had been watching where he was going it would have been nowhere near as bad....most players in the NRL actually are disagreeing with Inglis getting banned for 3 games and also with any move to take out the shoulder charge from the game.

Just talking to Ian Nagle on Paul Street. He's put on a LOT of bulk: over 5kg and aiming for another 3. He's visibly and noticeably bigger than he was in May. Seeing a surgeon tomorrow, optimistic and in good form and reckons it could be a blessing in disguise tto allow him to get the bulk on and a serious pre-season in.

O'Connell set to miss start of season

New Munster head coach Rob Penney is resigned to planning without Paul O'Connell for the start of the Pro12 campaign.
It was hoped that O'Connell might be fit enough to play some part in Munster's pre-season warm-ups against Bristol on Friday or London Irish next week, but Penney confirmed that the skipper will miss their season opener against Edinburgh -- and could be out even longer.
"It just depends on how he is over the next 10 days or so, but it's highly unlikely that he'll be available for the first round," said Penney. "We want to be able to unleash him when he's 100pc. He's at the stage in his career that he needs consistent rugby and when he gets that, he's one of the best locks in the world."
There was further bad news on the injury front as Irish international Felix Jones will not now be back in action until "Christmas time".
Jones missed six months of last season after a serious ankle injury and was forced to undergo shoulder reconstruction surgery in May. He was expected to be back after a four-month recovery, but Penney confirmed that it could be closer to six or seven months before he's fit to line out for Munster.
"Felix is not due back until Christmas-ish, late November. He is charging around like a spring chicken, which is a great sign. But we have to be cognisant of the fact that he has had some serious injuries in the past."
But there was better news on Niall Ronan, who Penney hopes is not too far from full fitness.
Forwards coach Anthony Foley is also looking forward to getting stuck into the cut and thrust of the new season, especially after how Munster ended last season on a downer.
"When you finish on a bad note like that, the pre-season cannot come quick enough for you," he said.
With so many internationals unable to line out until the third round of the Pro12 and with a hat full of injuries, it was great for Foley to see Doug Howlett back in the red shirt in last week's friendly against La Rochelle.
"His return to fitness has been nothing short of remarkable, he has been a thorough professional," he said.
Penney has made four changes from the side that was defeated in La Rochelle last week for the visit of Bristol to Musgrave Park, with New Zealand international Casey Laulala making his first start for Munster, while Damien Varley, Dave Foley and Paddy Butler also take their season's bow.
Munster (v Bristol) -- D Hurley; D Howlett, C Laulala, J Downey, L O'Dea; I Keatley, D Williams; D Kilcoyne, D Varley, S Archer; B Holland, D Foley; T O'Donnell, S Dougall, P Butler.

Not looking good for POC. Must have had a setback in his recovery programme.
sounds like they are trying to get him match fit for HEC.
POC wasn't expected to be back for the warm-ups, and was at best hoping to be back for the Pro12. I'd rather we take it handy and get it right.

POC is fine, they are just minding him, rightly so. Last thing that is needed is to rush a fella back and then suffer again, same applies with Felix, taking the correct approach.
Id agree. Does it indicate they were rushed back too quickly in the past? I'm wondering with Jones particularly if they are taking the view that he needs to build up his body or something after all his setbacks. He is "charging around like a spring chicken" yet won't be back till xmasish. I wonder are we seeing a slightly different approach from the medical/ s&c side of things
You'd worry for Felix. It's getting very hard to see him as the long term fullback option for Munster. He seems to be very brittle like Barry Murphy. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Micko's retirement is gonna hurt us a lot more than we realised. 3 of our 2nd rows are internationals, after that - Foley, Nagle and Holland??.
When things go wrong, blame McGahan
Donnellan has been around a while, and is touching 24. Though he's in the academy, he's probably physically ready for first-team rugby. He does look remarkably like Elijah Wood.

Nagle and Foley are going to have to step up at some stage. They have both had full contracts for over a year and have been around the set up for a few years. We can't keep them in cotton wool till they are 28. POC and DOC are both well into their 30's at this stage, time for one of Nagle and Foley to really step up
