Leamy Limps Out Of Ulster Game
    29 December 2011, 12:10 pm
    By The Editor

Denis Leamy has been ruled out of contention for a place in the Munster squad for tomorrow's game with Ulster after aggravating and old injury (hip) in training.
He had been named along with Sean Scanlon (shoulder) in the extended squad announced for this game but withdrew from training in Cork on Wednesday. Like Scanlon the injuries will be re-assessed early next week but at this stage neither are ruled out of contention with the Benetton Treviso game in mind. Declan Cusack is another who has a shoulder injury keeping him sidelined just now bringing the number of walking wounded to eleven.
Good news however is that Peter O'Mahony (jaw) is expected back in time for the Treviso game,Mike Sherry (ankle) has resumed light training (jogging), Felix Jones (foot) is looking at a return sometime in late January/early February while Troy Smith (knee) and David Wallace (knee) are on schedule for a return in February.
Nothing can be confirmed about a return date for Jerry Flannery (calf) with Doug Howlett(achilles,6-8 months) gone for the season and Darragh Hurley (back injury) looking at up to four months out.

Hurley is having a rotten ould season, wasn't it a calf injury he had at the start, and now he's got a back injury. Real shame for the guy.

If Sherry is back jogging, I wonder how long that puts him away from match fitness. If we can complete getting out of the HEC group alright, we might have himself, Jones and Wallace returning during the six nations. That's be a some boost.

Feel terribly sorry for Hurley, you'd have to think his future in the pro game is in doubt now.

Looks like we will have Leamy and O'Mahony back for the last 2 Heineken games which is a boost. Curious that it doesn't give an estimated return date for Sherry alright. Would be great to have him back for the Saints game at least. The quarters of the Heineken aren't till the first week in April so everyone bar Hurley, Fla and Dougie should be back by then. Plenty of games between now and then for more guys to get injured of course...

Some people are just bloody unlucky. Is Leamy out of the Ireland camp with injury too so? I wasn't sure why he wasn't on the list of internationals at Carton House.

Munster could slip out of the top four in the RaboDirect depending on how results go tomorrow but of more immediate concern will be the injuries picked up in Ravenhill on Friday.
They went into the game with 11 of their squad on the physio benches and three more are joining them after the Ulster clash.Tom Gleeson was the first to go in Ravenhill with a shoulder injury in the 27th minute to be followed by Tommy O'Donnell seven minutes later after his boot seemed to get stuck in the turf causing injury to his knee.
Then in the second half, on 50 minutes Damien Varley retired with a shoulder injury to be replaced by Denis Fogarty. Munster already have Mike Sherry on the treatment table leaving Fogarty and Sean Henry the hookers available if Varley's injury proves serious.
Next up for Munster is the visit of Treviso to Limerick next Saturday. The Italian side have won on the road three times already this season, twice in Ireland in Galway and Belfast. There other away win was in Glasgow.

On the injury front, of the three players, Damien Varley, Tom Gleeson and Tommy O'Donnell, who retired in the course of the game in Belfast, Varley looks to be the least serious but Gleeson(shoulder) and O'Donnell (knee) will require further medical examination later in the week to establish the full extent of their injuries.
Peter O'Mahony (jaw) is expected to resume training this week with a possible return, subject to medical clearance, against the Italians on the cards.

Sadly, agree, Joey. When he has gotten any game time at all, he looks really good but is permanently injured. Has been around for quite a long time now but still youthful for a prop. The fact that Munster are keeping him under contract indicates his quality and potential.

from the camera shot of O'Donnell on the bench when he came off he looked like he thought his season was over, poor guy was practically in tears. Varley looked like he got a stinger as he was shaking his hand coming off. No real shots of Gleeson to see how bad his was.

The pictures of Varley training on the deadsite are heartening anyway. Would not want to be going to Milton Keynes with Fogs at 2

Top specialist to assess Leamy injury

    Thursday, January 05, 2012
DENIS LEAMY will have a troublesome hip injury assessed by a top London based specialist today.
Leamy has struggled with the complaint in recent months and was ruled out of the RaboDirect Pro12 clash with Ulster last week because of the problem.

The Irish international has flown to England in a bid to resolve the issue and return to action. His unavailability for this weekend’s RaboDirect Pro12 tie with Treviso at Thomond Park, and the likelihood he will also miss the next stage of the Heineken Cup is stretching Munster’s resources, although coach Tony McGahan will be encouraged by the return of Peter O’Mahony.

So Leamy out for the next Heineken cup game. POM potentially might pick up an injury early and have to go off. Who is our next 6 after them two? I guess it's Donn Ryan.

Leamy with a hip injury that's requiring visits to specialists.. better be hoping this isn't a Dowling-type injury, which seem to be increasingly common as the cause for player retirements.

Wallace is due back soon, is he in full training yet ? Jones is due back aswell. They'll make some difference

Leamy will miss all 6N. Out for 4 months. Surgery needed on hip injury. Wally comeback can't come quick enough.

Awful news for us. He's had rotten luck for the last 3 years.

So that's Wally, Jones, Fla, Leamy, Dougie, Darragh Hurley, Sherry and Troy Smith all out with some sort of long term injuries and then Hayes is retired and Stringer released for 3 months. Thats some shock to the system.

  28. #25
THG is to blame. They're all leadswingers - under DK players would have togged out with limbs missing ffs.
They need to eat up their greens, especially the broccoli, plus a 2 week course of Sanatogen will sort out most injuries.
    well looka

F**k. I know that on paper we have a big squad and people were saying it needs to be downsized, but at this stage it's like British industry under Thatcher. Best of luck to Leams for the op.

If Ronan isn't fit in time for next week then McGahan may have to look at putting Butler on the bench instead of Holland. If O'Mahony had to go off then a backrow of Ryan, Holland & Coughlan looks very clunky.

I just wish for Leamy personally that he makes it back in 100% shape. One of the great Munstermen.
