At the Irish Craft Brewers Fest in the RDS this weekend, O'Hara's had a cask version of the Leann Folláin that they had aged in whiskey casks. The flavours were amazing and the stout was really excellent.
The Shandon stout from Franciscan Well sold out by 7pm on Saturday, such was its popularity.
Metalman brought their excellent IPA, their Alternator weissbier, a new porter like dark ale (name eludes me), their Chameleon Ginger Beer (very refreshing) and a couple of Chameleon Infusions (ie mixed with another flavour; lime or rasberry). When Metalman start bottling i expect them to do very well in off licence sales.
The one off Spelt Saison from Trouble Brewing was sold out early on saturday evening also. I do enjoy their Dark Arts Porter.
Breweyed from Offaly were there under their new brand name, Bo Bristle and were launching their Pale Ale which was attracting plenty of attention.
8degrees did some unbelievable trade. They sold out of all their beers on Saturday. I never got the opportunity to try the Barefoot Bohemian on tap or the seasonal Ocht-toberfest because the trade for those was immense.
Both Hilden and Whitewater breweries were there with a couple of new brews since last year and Whitewater brought the last of their bourbon aged Clotworthy Dobbin, which was my top beer from last year.
Notable absentees were Galway Bay Brewery and also Hooker Brewery (from Roscommon).
Notable non-Irish inclusions were Sierra Nevada Brewery fro California and a Kentucky Brewery whose name i've forgotten.
There were some very interesting and tasty craft ciders available; Tempted (armagh), Stonewell (Cork) were good ciders, but the McIvor's Cider (Armagh) was a really good dry cider.

I forgot to mention, it appears that the Franciscan Well guys are producing a Whiskey Aged Stout which will be available about the end of November. They'll be selling in litre bottles and on cask. It should be worth looking out for.

There's a place in Atlantic City called the Tun Tavern and the do tastings but it's essentially a small board with hole sawed spots for 5 glasses the size of a small tumbler / very large shot glass. They also can give you a "growler" to take away of their homemade stuff etc...a gallon glass jug with a cork in it. You bring it back for refills .

Emmm, Yes. Did it appear as I was attempting to imply something else? They sell beer, they make some of the beer that they sell. If you would like to take home some of the beer that they sell on tap - you may fill up a large jug and pay a price for the volume which is somewhat discounted from the 16 oz unit price IIRC.

In other news,
Just back from a wedding in Wales.
During which time I have sampled
2 x ales from Anglesey (possibly by Bragdy Ynys Mon - they were from unmarked Cask)
2 x ales from Cerddin Brewery, Maesteg (Cascade and Dragons Fire) - Best of the Weekend!!
Conwy Brewery - Rampart, Welsh Pride, Celebration Ale, Beachcomber Blonde, + another which i think was Shipwreck
Celt Brewery - Unsure which one (will be looking for more from these guys (Pontypridd brewery))
Brains Dark - Haven't had some of this for years and years. The old saying goes, "aaalf a daaark at the Caaardiff Aaaarms Paaaark"
Reverend James - The old Buckleys Ale now brewed by Brains, a classic strong one.
Tomos Watkin - Cwrw Braf, Cwrw Idris, OSB
Also had a pint of Lee's ('Best bitter' I think, although it could have been the Bitter)

Lighthouse beer by Adnams ...currently £1/pint bottle in my local Aldi .... only 3.4% vol but a very tasty and easy drinking sup. Perfect for a nice late-summer evening!

In all the slagging of Brian Cowen, it is worth bearing in mind that he (as Minister for Finance) introduced a lower rate of excise for craft brews which has helped grow this industry. Credit where it is due...

I've been a fan of Adnams for a few years now and have sampled several of their brews - mostly the Explorer or Gunhill - but am new to the Lighthouse beer. It's my current tipple of choice though and at £1/pint - ridiculously good value for money.
Never been to Southwold ...

And murdered off, or as near to craft cider. I had a long chat with the owner of Stonewell Cider (from Kinsale.) For an off license to make a profit on his cider they have to charge €4, all the pubs I've been in are at least €5.50 and they're making very little money off it compared to beer. Bulmers have been able to eat the tax because sales of however many million make up for a higher tax rate. A small company just can't compete with it (and he has no intention of competing with them either.) So he's had to pitch his cider as a premium one that people only ever have one or two with. Of course the government targeted it easily because the thought is most ciders are drunk by teenagers in fields and not that it's an adult drink that can be just as varied as wine or beer.
Still, it's a lovely cider and it's my preference to start with one or two of those now. Which is strange because I wouldn't have touched cider until this stuff came out.
I know something that will blow your minds. I can't tell you and I can't tell you why I can't tell you. You'll know soon and then I'll be confirmed right.
I had that Sierra Nevada pale ale on Friday night. Very tasty but they were charging €5.15 for 350ml bottles so I only had the two.
Very tasty though.
Then on Sunday I bought a case of 12 Sol (because it was on sale). NEVER again. Manky.
SAMUEL ADAMS OCTOBERFEST MILKSHAKE
We've had plenty of beer-based concoctions before, but a milkshake? The Samuel Adams Octoberfest Milkshake ($TBA) is here to make us believers. Available through November 11 at Red Robin, this unique drink is a blend of soft serve ice cream, Samuel Adams Octoberfest draft, vanilla, and caramel, and pairs well with the chain's warm pretzel bites and Pub Crawl Tavern Burger, which boasts beer cheese spread, beer mustard-onions, and bacon.

The Titanic Quarter IPA was utter muck - completely tasteless, generic and devoid of character. Thankfully I only bought the one, and had two people to help me finish it. AVOID. Very disappointing, as apparently it's made by the Hilden brewery.
However, on Saturday afternoon we called in to the local Co-op and bought a few bottles of their own brand "Gold Miner", a bottle-conditioned ale brewed by the Freeminer Brewery, which apparently has one of the oldest malting houses still in operation in England. Quite a pleasant wee surprise, a well balanced own-brand ale which successfully avoids either an excess emphasis on the hops or any hint of cloying treacley-ness that you sometimes get with maltier beers. Nice one, will buy again.

Haven't had any really good beers from NI. Headless Dog and Belfast Blone were both crap. Belfast Black would be the pick of the crop to date.
Belfast Ale is quite good, and Clotworthy Dobbin - while not to my taste - seems to be well regarded. Both come from the Whitewater brewery in Kilkeel. The Hilden brewery produce a range of ales and a wheat beer - have only had the "Hilden Ale" but was quite impressed with it.

The October Bank Holiday weekend 25 - 29 sees the second annual Irish Craft Beer & Farmhouse Cheese event. www.bordbia.ie
Thursday November 8 is International Stout Day www.stoutday.com A great excuse to drink some excellent stout. Why not leave the usual suspects behind and try the excellent stouts and porters from the likes of Carlow, Dungavan, Porterhouse, Elbow Lane, Trouble Brewing etc.
Has anyone tried the various Oktoberfeat beers from the likes of Paulaner, Erdinger?
Franciscan Well brewery is expanding. It's targetting the American Market with a number of strong stouts. see here

Saw that earlier. Hope they sell some of those strong stouts here. They were awarded the best dry stout in europre award at the World Beer Awards.
