Enjoyed a well earned pint of Brains SA (Skull Attack) last night after assembling half of IKEA in the missus' office.
I have no idea what ye Brains nay sayers have against it. Hyfryd iawn.
Bottles currently are 5 for a €10er at Tesco (Coonagh anyway), includes other beers including SA Gold and others.

Saw it in Tesco. Haven't drank it in years but never say never. Where would you place it in terms of taste etc? London Pride?
Heading to Antwerp again this day next week for a couple of days, De Koninck and Seef Bier, two of my favourites, can't wait.

I was bought up on the stuff so I'm always gonna be biased, however its not my favourite welsh ale.
Compared to London Pride, SA is smoother, less fruity and has a drier finish. Its very well balanced and is moreish unlike Pride which leaves you with a contempt feeling (IMO).
If you like carbonation, yer better off sticking to the bottles, but if you're like me and prefer your ale on the flat side then taste it in Cardiff (one of the old pubs like City Arms) straight from the pump (not flat, but less so than bottles). Not bad from the can either...shock horror.
Bullmastiff brewery in cardiff also make excellent ale if you are about the capital. You'll get their ales on the pumps in 'Owain Glyndwr' near st johns the catholic church near the Hayes, amongst other places. Usually amongst the guest ales

Huwie, I remember drinking in St.Mary St in Cardiff circa '80-'81. We used to be regular visitors playing v Glamorgan Wanderers and Cardiff and used to have a few pints in the city on a Saturday night. Halcyon days. Alas, due to marriage, children and unemployment I haven't had the pleasure in years. I lived in London for many years and have a love of cask ale that I can't satisfy here in Limerick. I get to snatch a few pints in Dublin now and again. Any pubs in Limerick with cask?
None that I've seen unfortunately.
May I recommend getting in touch with an Irish brewery that do cask ales to see whether they'd supply you at the next family gathering/party/beer night etc.
I got Gwaun valley brewery to set up and tap 2 casks and a keg of cider for my brothers stag last year in West Wales. As you know, you need to allow for settling time so have a place ready for it in advance.
You always end up with the hardcore drinkers carefully nursing the last drops out of the cask well into the early hours. Wonderful
I've never tried it in Ireland, but I assume its easy enough. I've heard of some breweries in UK offering pump rental also (you clamp it onto a table i suspect like they do for those rent-a-bar yokes)
Edit: the keg of cider was from a farm down the road.

A lot of the micro / craft brewers cask their beer. Don't know and never asked if they would supply a private party, thanks for the idea. You can get cask in Cork. Bierhaus and Abbots.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if limerick has the right drinkers to sustain cask ale drinking anyway. It wouldn't be drank quick enough and it would go stale. I'd be quite happy to see more good ale in kegs being served. Like Howling Gale, Helvick Gold, Durty Nelly's Ale etc

I'm currently a bit obsessive about The Kernel brewery. If you can get anything they do in the bottle do.
Had a pint of Darkstar's HopHead at the weekend too. Lovely pale ale.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the good breweries follow up the pale ales with good brown ales for the autumn. Meantime had an amazing American brown last year.

Had The Kernel on draught for the first time tonight. My obsession deepens.
Ad HighWire's West Coast Pale Ale too. Nice drop.
Both at the Craft Beer Bar in Leather Lane, Farringdon.

Kernel founder and headbrewer Evin O'Riordan from Waterford. Believe the beers are excellent. Must get back over to Blighty.
Is he? I'm disproportionately please by that news. They're ****ing fantastic, and all out of a railway arch in bermondsey.
The beer scene here has taken a massive leap in the last 18 months. The CAMRA real ale thing is being left behind by far more diverse craft beer bars selling British, American, Belgian, German etc side by side. I'm not sure there's a better place to be a beer drinker in the world at the moment.

A proposition: weekend of the Sarries match, a "some even better than tuborg" thread regulars crawl in London?

That would be good Balla! If i make it to the Sarrie's game i'd be game for a night of quality beers.
In the meantime, for all you craft-beer drinkers here in Ireland, the Irish Craft Brewing Festival kicks off on friday. I'm heading up on Saturday (post friday night's match) to enjoy some of the beers on cask (hopefully the Whitewater Brewers have some of the bourbon casked Clotworthy Dobbin) and to try the new beers from Carlow Brewing Co. (O'Hara's) and Hilden Brewery.

Had a few pints of Tom Crean lager in his own place on Saturday afternoon, really impressed with it, would drink it regularly if I had access to it. It was one of the nicest afternoons I've had in a while, a few pints sitting outside in the sun with the kids playing by the stream, happiness all round!!

Interesting discussion over the weekend re the top 5 Irish craft beers. I'm partial to Trouble Brewings offerings (x2) and 8 Degrees (x3) so I'd always have a full stock of those 5. Discussion varied over what were the best vs what were the most popular. Planning to expand my horizons next visit to the local, any other irish craft beers that would make anybodies top 5?
Belfast Ale and Galway Hooker would be on my list. Gonna be trying a bottle of Titanic Quarter "Irish Pale Ale" on Friday - will let you know how I get on.

Had a bottle of Galway Hooker at the weekend (have to be careful how I phrase that). Lovely brew

For a good range of Irish craft and world beers you could start in Bradleys on North Main St and Abbots on Devonshire St. two offies with very good choices. You should find Alpha Dawg IPA from Franciscan Well, 1ltr bottles, €10. Also beers from Elbow Lane.
Also look for beers from Dungarvan, O'Hara's, Porterhouse, White Gypsy, Metalman.
There is a very decent pale ale brewed by O'Hara's and sold in Aldi under the O'Shea's label for €1.79
Franciscan Well also have an excellent range of own brew beers in their pub on North Quay. 5 min walk away is Bierhaus on Popes Quay again with an excellen range of beers and usually one on cask.
www.beoir.org will give you more information. Keep tasting, favourite beers are very subjective.

I'd no idea that O'Hara's sell in aldi under a different name. Is it the same pale ale? It is great stuff.
On Sunday evening I had a bottle of the Leann Follain stout and it has a smashing flavour.
