Nice beer (some even better than Tuborg)

Cheers for all the heads up on all these beers. Falling seriously in love with Leffe Blond. Even nicer than Hoegarrden imho

If you like Leffe try 3 Monts from Northern France. 750ml and 8.5%. Available at Desmond's Nextdoor on Fr. Russell Rd. in Limerick and the Abbotts in Cork, about €6.50 for a bottle.

Absolutely beautiful stuff, 5eight, just outstanding beer, and Desmond is a gent, and a major beer head.

On the Goose Island IPA over the weekend, excellent stuff. For Trappist beer fans a very good beer is La Trappe dubbel and triples brewed outside Tilburg in the only Abbey brewery in The Netherlands.

As a beer enjoyer and beer swamper which of the three of these is the best to visit in Cork this weekend please friends?:

    The Bierhaus

    The Bierhalle

    The Franciscan Brewery

And yes I do realise visiting all 3 would be optimal but time shall not allow, is the food good in the Bierhalle? If anyone has other joints they think are better for horsing down craft and rare beers than all help would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance for any and all opinions!!

The bierhalle and bierhaus are next to each other. The only reason to goto the bierhalle would be for food. The bierhaus has a good selection of bottled and tap beers. There seems to be an emphasis on the ale/ipa theme for the last few weeks. Good fun lots of variety. They are on Facebook and regularly update what guest beers are in.

The Franciscan well is less than five mins walk from the bierhaus so it should be possible to get that in without wasting too much time.

Another option but with poor surroundings would be the abbot ale house, this is upstairs above the off license of the same name on coburg street, maybe 8-10 mins from bierhaus.

If ye wish to stay on the "craft beers", the crane lane now has a good selection, it will be open till 2 and admission is free.

To answer your question, I would choose the bierhaus first, a few give out about the bar staff, but it has never bothered me. The food in the bierhalle is ok, but might work to allow ye "save time". If ye really are on the beer, the bierhaus allows/encourages you to bring in pizzas from uncle petes to have at you table, it is just two doors away.

    Enjoy

The hub has reopened as a craft beer bar, opposite end of town to the previous bars mentioned but close to Fionnbarras on Douglas street which interestingly enough usually has a guest draught bitter. Tom Barrys and Callinans also close by. One that part of town is some great pubs.

Was at a stag in the Western Highlands last weekend and the local was the Clachaig Inn (some may know it well on here) see photos below. The drinking man's guide to scotland gives the place a score of 9.5/10.
There were at least 20 ales along the bar that were constantly changing. From beautiful heather ales to robust dark ones. The ales were mostly local and seasonal and thus I am not able to give you any recommendations other than to visit the place if you are on tour. (A great area for a stag BTW).
They also had hundreds of whiskeys for those of you who enjoy an aul nippy sweetie.

Although I like to be presented with a small selection and not faced with multiple choices, it was a real treat.

During the weekend I also drank the following from bottles.

Hook Norton Brewery - 'Hooky Gold' (couldn't find Old Hooky - Chips) - V Nice
Ringwood Brewery - 'Old Thumper' (my brother's local strong ale) - lovely as always
    Fyne Ales - 'Maverick' - V nice
    Brewdog - 5am saint
    Brewdog - Punk IPA
Brewdog - Trashy Blonde -- all very nice

ID:	3782Stone IPA, smuggled in for me from San Diego, had read and heard loads and was looking forward to it. Underwhelmed. It's a very good beer but maybe my expectations were too high. Don't know what I was expecting. Goose Island IPA is as good. The Stone was $8 in SD for 22oz/650ml. O'Hara's IPA is €2.80 for 500ml. I think US IPAs are all pretty similar, hop bombs with little or no subtlety. Bit like the US actually. Irish and English ales have more going for them, IMO.

It's been a while since I drank anything by Brains but my memories of it aren't great. Had a bottle of Bitter & Twisted recently, wasn't bad. I'd buy Helvick Gold before it.

Joker by Williams Bros. is very nice. Is there a bit of a renaissance in Welsh / Scottish brewing a la Ireland?

Huwie, we were at the Clachaig Inn the summer before last, had a great meal in there and it was within walking distance from our log cabin down at the hostel. Very fond memories of the place, so thanks for the reminder!
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.

    Cheers Mack,

As part of my dedication to munsterfans I just extended my Friday drinks........ Hic hic.

Called into the new craft beer pub in the mardyke, next to the woolshed. Don't think it even has a name just a blackboard outside!
anyway inside at the front bar they have a lot of ales on tap, 8 degrees etc, but also beers from Chorce Dhuibne. Around the corner they have a lot of bottled beers, orval, leffe etc. We didn't stay , it just feels very studentie!! If that makes sense.

The Hub, next to the market tavern, had a number of taps, 8 degrees, leffe, urquell, staroparmen and a few more. In bottles leffe blonde and bruin, chimay, la chouffe, mc chouffe, ginger beer, 8 degrees etc. nice and clean in there.......... But I still edge towards the bierhaus.

The bierhaus still have a lot of ales on special, but I did get a few nice Schneidder Weisse Blonde (tap1) for €4. That was the highlight for me.

    Prost!

What were the prices like? I can't understand why a bottle of la Trappe cost €3.50 in an Irish Bar in Tilburg and €8 in the bierhaus. A complete piss take.
Have a la Trappe trippel and a game island honkers ale ready for consumption. Down in Tesco tonight and pleased to report the return of Youngs Bitter .

Expensive in mardyke. Only had an urquell in the hub €4.50.

Not sure where you got €8 for a la trappe? Last time had one think it was €5 or maybe €5.50, which I think is a bit steep.

For those of us lucky to be domiciled in Limerick, the Stillhouse on Thomas St. has a range of bottle ales for €4.95 and the best value has to be Gouden Carlous Hopsinjoor and Chimay Bleu Grand Reserve both 750ml for €10.

Further up the street in the Blind Pig bottles are a similar price with Porterhouse Plain on tap at €3.80 and Metalman Pale Ale at €4.60. Trouble Brewing Dark Arts Porter is €4.95 in 500ml bottles. One of the best porters in Ireland.

And for for stout lovers, Tesco has Fullers Black Cab Stout as part of their 5 for €10 offer. Lidl has Franziskaner 4 for €5 from Monday Sept 3.

sure why would welsh brewing need a renaissance? A great spot to drink for a long time.
And there are loads of new brewers about too.

There is a great tradition of brewing in Wales. A new brewery opening is not a renaissance. Perhaps there has been a renaissance in urban breweries and ale drinking but that is an universal trend.
Just bought 5 bottles of Brains SA / SA Gold for a 10er in tesco.
