Not an overly bad first effort from Mr Quinlan it has to be said.

Good article, very honest. He's obviously finding it tough adjusting. Still think he's a loss to the game, not just in terms of knowledge and experience that he could pass on in a training/mentoring role, but in terms of his contribution on the field. Yes, I'd noticed in his penultimate season that he hadn't been quite as effective, but from the return to form of his last season it looked to me like the one before had been a temporary blip. I know there's a possibility that I've let myself be caught up in the "just one more season" mentality, but I really believe he had that in him.

I hope he's successful with the media work, as it seems he has something worth bringing to the table. In terms of working in print, hopefully he'll be able to make the transition from writing objectively about himself to writing detailed analyses of games or of teams. I thought he did a fantastic job as a co-commentator for the Castres game, certainly much easier to listen to than a lot of the Sky pundits, and seemed more comfortable in that role than in the studio for the pre-match/half-time/post-match analysis. If nothing else I'd say he has a real future in commentating.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.

He's a good pundit IMHO. Still learning, but he's impressively impartial for someone who's just retired.

Mind you he was shaping before a few of the Ireland games ... I half expected him to drop the mike, take off the coat and tog off.

It took him less than four minutes of play to use the word "unbelievable" during his analysis last Saturday.

Quinnie, my old petunia, try not to use too many superlatives until the end of a match! Especially if Munster is involved.

Funny one this, In Australia, and I am pretty sure NZ and I think US as well. They use the club as a collective noun. So you might hear 'Manchester Utd is leading the Premier league or some such'.
For some reason ourselves and the brits seem to ignore this.

Good article, nice and honest from Quinnie.
Thought he was impressively impartial in his first game as co-commentator. Wasn't scared to call poor Munster play when it occurred.
Plus there was no "back in my day...." comments that you get from Frankie.

    Quinnie >>>>>>>> Frankie
We'll have to uncuff him and "de-dildo" him, obviously... Smash up the furniture like he was chasing you all rapey. Fortunately, he's Italian so that shouldn't be too hard to sell.

As a long-term student at the Munster Rugby School of Hyperbole - (home of "ligind", "unbeleeeeevable", "miracle", "unreeeeel", "massive", etc. etc.) - Quinnie deserves to be cut some slack. I have no doubt that after undergoing more rehab and de-programming, he'll revert to speaking mainly in positives rather than exclusively in superlatives.

Can't believe you left out "Tremenjuss". Standards are indeed slipping - the question that remains is whether the malaise is due merely to incipient senility or to excessive indulgence in the blissful Hippocrene.

Pro rugby must be one of the few "jobs" where guys you live next door to, have known for maybe 15 years, become people you struggle to associate with once you're on the outside. It really seems to be an issue for most of the Irish guys who retire, maybe more than other areas because they really have spent so much time together.

    ALAN QUINLAN

FROM THE BLINDSIDE: We’ve all had to do performance reviews, but what really struck me about all the comments that came out of the English review was that very little was said about the players themselves

PERFORMANCE REVIEWS, player reviews, inquests –

    .........

The England players let themselves down in New Zealand by behaving childishly and having very little discipline off the field. They were living in a bubble over there and a few of them thought they were superstars. That was the opinion the general public had of them, it was the perception they were giving out.

Now maybe that’s unfair but opinions can be like that. They won’t always be fair.

Nobody should know that better than the England players who contributed so negatively to the review.

    Well put Quinny.

Yourself and Trev are becoming quite the scribes.....

Two things strike me - firstly, his campaigning on the issue of mens depression is now all the more useful because of the Gary Speed sensation, and Quinnie still has 'street cred'; and secondly, he has the women interviewers eating out of his hand - saw him on TV Player last week, on the Maura Derrane afternoon show. The plastic princess was giggly and flapping her hands - the missus had a great laugh. As for Joanne Cantwell...........

Ata boy Quinny, keep talking us down.

Sunday could be a very tough game if we go into it thinking Thomond Park will win it for us.

Scarlets will arive with no fear and the crowd is not at its most intimidating on a Sunday morning.

We will have to get fast start, get on top of them and knock the fight out of them early.
