Hopefully this is a success for Argentinian rugby. I travelled extensively throughout Argentina last year, rugby is for the most part an unknown sport outside of Buenos Aires. I met one bloke from Rosario who was familiar with the game, nobody else had heard of it outside of BA. It's still very much viewed as an elitist sport among the Portenoes of Buenos Aires - almost up there with the polo.

Hope it proves a succesful venture for them.

At least the tournament structure is much improved from Tri-Nations. Simple home and away test format. I quite like that.

    A few points...........

    1) ARC was the Australian national championship set up to be similar to Currie Cup/NPC but made an $8m loss so couldn't be sustained. The rugby on the pitch was of very high standard though with a mix of Super players not in the Wallabies squad and up and coming club players. The likes of David Pocock and Kurtley Beale (player of the tournament) improved no end from the exposure to better quality rugby and seeing the standard needed to succeed at Super level
    2) I won't go into the in's and out's of SANZAR and what they do etc but the Argies will never be included in the organisation. It's just not possible
    3) Not only are the distances to be travelled outrageous but an Argie airline have cancelled a load of flights including the one booked to bring the Aussies over. They now have to spend an extra 17 hours in the air (incl stop over) to get to Argie land.

  6. #36
That's right Garryowen ..... distances for ARC were just too much and locals didn't really buy into new team that were makey upper...... only Melbourne rebels formed a bit if a fan base that mainly due to lack of Melbourne based team..

Other classic teams in ARC ...Ballymore Tornadoes , East Coast Aces, Sydney Fleet, Perth Spirit, Central Coast Rays and Western Sydney Rams

Fans of traditional teams like Randwick etc didn't really take to amalgamation and it only lasted a year.

    Henry excited by Pumas challenge

Former New Zealand boss Graham Henry believes he can help Argentina play to their full potential during the upcoming international season.

Henry has been appointed technical consultant to the Pumas, who will compete for the first time in the Rugby Championship - formerly the Tri-Nations - against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

"Argentina are faced with a very important challenge but we need this in order to improve because we can't improve by playing the weakest, we need to play the strongest," said the World Cup-winning coach.
Henry's role will be to work closely for seven weeks with head coach Santiago Phelan during preparations for international matches.
"My job with the coaches is to exchange ideas, and help them improve their game," explained Henry.
"I'm going to work five weeks here, another two in New Zealand and Australia. I would like to help more but I have my family and they are at present by main responsibilty," he added..
The 65-year-old, who was previously known as 'The Great Redeemer' for his work during four years with Wales, explained that his love of the game had been too much for him just to retire.
"Rugby is in my blood," Henry revealed.
"Coaching is like a disease. I like coaching and I like the game. Argentina is a challenge and I enjoy a challenge. I also respect the people here.
"They are good people, good rugby people, so this is also a privilege for me.
"I think that Argentinian rugby is in good shape, as they did well in the last two World Cups.
"We've begun a process, and I'm impressed with all the information that I've received from the coaches.
"I hope that my ideas will be useful and allow them to continue to improve.
"This tournament is a big opportunity. We could feel inhibited but we could also give our best."
Praising the Pumas "character, personality and fighting spirit", he added: "They defend very well, they only need to score more tries, that's all."
Phelan is excited about having the opportunity to work with Henry.
"It's with pride that Graham helps us," he said.
"The Pumas staff are very keen to show him how we work so that he can give us his vision and apply his concepts."
The Pumas will play their inaugural Rugby Championship match against South Africa, on August 25, at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in the western city of Mendoza.

That's right actually. Himself and Roncero both went after the last French game. Strange decision with them getting into the Tri Nations.

It's only a training squad. Will look a lot different once the Reds lads come back in long with the rested Sharpe and a few injury clear ups.

There's a decent and useful fixtures table on dropkickrugby.com here for the rugby championship.

Also, it has some useful weather links for anyone punting on it (granted, you can just google the weather)and the lads said they'll be adding some more stuff like refs to have everything in the one place etc.

News roundup: The Python is injured and Bryce is finished at test level.

    From superxv.com

All Black Smith out of Rugby Championship openers

All Black centre Conrad Smith will miss the opening rounds of the new Four Nations Rugby Championship at least due to an eye injury.
Hurricanes centre Smith has undergone two operations on his eye since his Super Rugby team's last match but he now needs time to recover.
Hurricanes Doctor Ian Murphy said, "Conrad had two procedures on his left eye for a retinal detachment last week, with the second on Friday. "
"They both went well and he is now recovering at home. At this stage he is expected to be out of training for six weeks."
The injury means that Smith will miss at least the first two Rugby Championship matches which are against Australia in in Sydney on August 18th and again a week later in Auckland.
The loss of Smith is a blow for the All Blacks as his fellow midfielder Sonny Bill Williams will not play in this year's tournament as he is leaving New Zealand to play in Japan.
The All Blacks depth will be tested in the midfield as Richard Kahui is also unavailable as he suffered a shoulder dislocation playing against the Reds on May the 13th.

NZ Ref Bryce Lawrence Test match career is 'over'

Article Published: Wednesday 25 July 2012

SANZAR's (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby) head of Referees Lyndon Bray has said that New Zealand Referee Bryce Lawrence's Test career is all but over.
Speaking to Eyewitness News in South Africa Bray said that Lawrence who won last year's NZRU Referee of the Year award for the fourth time would not be officiating Test matches in the forseeable future.
Lawrence was the referee for the Rugby World Cup quarter final between Australia and South Africa and his performance led to much anger in South Africa as they ended the match on the losing side.
The New Zealand Referee has been charge of Super Rugby matches this season but has not travelled to South Africa allegedly as he fears for his safety following numerous threats from South African rugby fans.
Lawrence was removed from the International Rugby Board (IRB) elite panel of referees in March this year.
"From an IRB perspective he has not been selected in the test, " Bray toldEyewitness News.
"There's a decision that we as selectors in the IRB made back in March. His time is over at that level."
Bray added that as Lawrence would not travel to South Africa it is highly unlikely that he would get back to Test level.
"At this stage he is clearly not on the team. His challenge would be, if it's possible, to find his way back again. "
"And I think given the reality and what he's gone through and the situation he's in at the moment that would be a huge ask."
    I am the million man.

Pat McCabe now being ruled out of the first month of TRC with a stress fracture in his leg.

Faingaa/Harris first centre or go all out with Quade 10 and Barnes 12?

Personally I'd keep Barnes at 10 and Faingaa into the centre

No cover at 10 off the bench, but two backrow subs? So if Barnes gets one of his head-knocks, Genia goes to 10. That worked out well last time. Also, Faingaa for McCabe looks like a defensive move to stop NZ's two monster centres. Think Deans is battening down the hatches.

Its its the Qantas wallabies bit that always makes me smirk....even by standards here in US its an awful sell out.
