    Best Broadband

What do people think is the best broadband on offer at the moment ?
No fibre in my area but Vodafone are offering to upgrade me to 24MB with free UK Calls for to continue paying €56 a month.

How does this compare to what other people are paying ?

Depends on where you are and your usage.

I've always found UPC the best. Seem to be light years ahead of the competition. Pity I can't get them now

i recently tried to switch to UPC fot tv and phone. absolute disaster. I also suspect their customer service phone lines prioritise new customers as i always got through quickly but my mum is always on hold for 10 or 15 minutes.

despite getting through quickly every call was like calling for the first time.

That seems fairly good since I am with them getting the following.

8mb speed, 40 gb monthly download allowance and free national and UK calls for €44 per month.

    Complete technophobe here.

Need some advice. Recently moved and just connected to phoneline broadband.

However supplied leads (ADSL and Ethernet) are too short so at the moment have wires trailing across entrance hall into living room. Needless to say we don't want to have this sitiuation for long.

    I figure my options are.

    1) Get some sort of wireless aerial for my PC so I can connect wirelessly with modem and leave it neatly out in the hallway. However concerned about loss of signal from hall into room.

    2) Get a longer ADSL cable which I can tack neatly around skirting so modem can then be close to PC.

    3) Keep modem in hall and buy a longer ethernet cable which I can run through to living room.

Which option (or other option I may not have thought of) would you go with?

Do you have a phone point in the living room? If so just use that (with a splitter)
You can buy a wireless booster for about 20 euro or less (second option) ie plug booster into pc, leave modem where it is.

How far is the hall to this room? Are we talking about a different floor or a room off the hall?
If it's the former, the cabling will be a bit annoying but you shouldn't lose too much signal at all. If it's the latter, you'll lose practically nothing.
You can get long ethernet cables (15m) very cheaply on ebay (~€5) if you want. No real difference between option 2 and 3 TBH.
Wireless router is the more expensive option but useful if you'er using multiple computers/laptops/smart phones.

Booster might be an option as vodafone broadband modem does have WiFi

Living room is just off the hall. I'm thinking ethernet cable myself. I presume any cat 5 cable should do the job?
I presumed the PC would be able to pick up the signal wirelessly but obviously I need some sort of booster/aerial for it to get the signal as the modem doesn't show up if I try to connect wirelessly to it.

well visually a lot of them have an antenna sticking out the back of the pc (unless its a laptop) so something like :

otherwise within windows you can check your control panel - Network Connections and see if theres a wireless network connection there. should say something like "view available wireless networks"

if your router/modem is wireless and only in the next room you shouldnt need any cables or boosters i wouldnt think

Were are you based Cowboy? If you're in Cork there's the crowd I use called Nova Networks who provide proper wireless broadband to a fair amount of areas. They do a lot of places that the phone line isn't capable of decent broadband, or at least places that were like that a few years ago. I've been able to get broadband from Eircom for the past four or so years but didn't see the point in switching for a crappier company with much worse tech support. And they use a good wireless system, not the phone network. You get an aerial on your roof and that links up with a base broadcast tower. The speed and connection is just as good as a cabled line, there's no drops in connection, and once you're within sight of the tower, you're golden.

Yep I use Ripplecom in Clare. Overall it's pretty good.

Living on the Fr Russell Rd in Limerick. Had a call there to UPC, looking at the fibre power broadband but to no avail, the fibre cable isn't laid on my road yet. 10X the linespeed for nearly the same cost as the cube.

Have you considered Digiweb Cowboy. Its a dish they stick on your roof. think its €35 for a 5MB line. i know its not the cheapest, but i have it 5 years and apart from the occasional restart of the router haven't had a bother with them. have a phone line with them too and tis fine as well.

Have the UPC 25mb and phone since November. Find it excellent, just keep an eye on your bill.
