Fightin' talk from Tommy!

" We're the title holders. We're not going to give it up without a fight."

This is really putting it up to us:

"They come out in their red and really get behind the team and act as a bit of a 16th man for them. But y'know it's up to us to try silence the crowd and hopefully turn them on their own players."

We serenaded him during his team's 2009 Thomond thrashing and now he thinks we will turn on our own?

a couple of lines of the balck velvet band!

Well, in a neat little town they call Belfast, apprentice to trade I was bound
Many an hours sweet happiness, have I spent in that neat little town
A sad misfortune came over me, which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and relations, betrayed by the black velvet band

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

I took a stroll down Broadway, meaning not long for to stay
When who should I meet but this pretty fair maid comes a tripping along the highway
She was both fair and handsome, her neck it was just like a swans
And her hair it hung over her shoulder, tied up with a black velvet band

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

I took a stroll with this pretty fair maid, and a gentleman passing us by
Well I knew she meant the doing of him, by the look in her roguish black eye
A goldwatch she took from his pocket and placed it right in to my hand
And the very first thing that I said was bad luck to the black velvet band

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

Before the judge and the jury, next morning I had to appear
The judge he says to me: "Young man, your case it is proven clear
We'll give you seven years penal servitude, to be spent faraway from the land
Far away from your friends and companions, betrayed by the black velvet band"

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

So come all you jolly young fellows a warning take by me
When you are out on the town me lads, beware of them pretty colleens
For they feed you with strong drink, "Oh yeah", 'til you are unable to stand
And the very next thing that you'll know is you've landed in Van Diemens Land

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

"Turn them on their own players?" Disappointing to see a comment like that from Tommy. Guess he's spending too long with that shower.

I agree, its a run of the mill statement.

The first job for any away side has to be to silence the crowd so IMO can't read too much into that; however completely agree he has spent too long over there and should be looking to get himself back home. Think he would look right in aMunster shirt after the RWC!!

A dose of cop on is needed here.
Its Tommy Bowe for FFS.
Munster are just using the statement, the way they need to.

Silence the crowd isn't the part I quoted, and I don't have a problem with that - of course any team would want to silence the opposition support. To me, "turning on their own players" sounds like the booing and jeering of your own side - that may be a common enough occurrence where Tommy's playing but it isn't something I'd like to become a feature at TP.

No they arent, some precious tulip poster on here is using it.

Munster are in some serious trouble if they are relying on bitterness to get you through this one, particularly if the bitterness is based on this vanilla statement. As some commentators have expressed, maybe using bitterness is not going to continue to work...

When I read that article I immediately thought "s**t stirrer". It
was obvious that Tommy had his tongue firmly in cheek. Can't
imagine he's been assimilated that much by their mentality.

WTF are ye on about!!!! He said nothing wrong there! Will ye come in out of the fog FFS! Preciousness reachign a new level in this thread! Pathetic!

On a side note, with it all going tits up at The Liberty, wouldnt Tommy be the perfect signing for us!! Winger or Centre! He would be ideal. Irish, world class, Back. The O's seem to be imploding. Holla and Scotty not getting on. Phillips and Hook departing stage left. 3/4 Empty stadium unless playing Cardiff...... It makes so much sense!

Altho I seem to recall a Hugh Farrelly article not so long back saying Leinster would be his preferred next port of call so that might scupper that

Yup.

Tommy Bowehas a great sense of humour. I don't doubt he is hopping the ball.

How should we let him know we are in on it on Saturday?

Any comment made by Tommy before a game is normally done with tongue firmly in cheek.

If Munster's 1st half performance is even nearlyas bad as the one against Harlequins it'll take no special effort on the Osprey's part to silence the support.

As always, Tommy enjoyed his "Black Velvet Band".. He is a class act who would be a welcome addition to any team. Even Jerry Collins was laughing with the guy in West Terrace who was arranging to meet him in Nancy's after the match.

I wonder if even Tommy Bowe could have predicted that it would be the players who turned on the supporters, when Donnacha Ryan ironically applauded the empty North & South terraces. Maybe the team doesn't think of us as the Greatest Fans in the World anymore.

How necessary was it
that he do that? After a pretty poor season, mocking fans
because they didn't turn up for whatever reason surely isn't
acceptable. Unless what he was doing wasn't meant to be a
mock, more so a joke.

Hard to know BourkeofDublin, seems to me that if supporters can openly castigate our coach's, players, our style of play, ticket prices, the new stadium, tactics, age profile, team selection etc etc, then surely the inverse must also be true. And the players are absolutely within their rights to openly mock the fans, for their lack of faith and belief in the club, the team and the players.

Did Dryan really clap the north and south terraces?

Stupid, silly thing to do.

Edit: Far more reasonable explanation given by Joey on the next page.

I guess so, but it is still the fans who put their faith in the
team and dosh out the money all season to keep the club
going. Mocking people that actively invest into a bunch of
players on a regular basis seems an incredibly harsh thing
to do.

Was listening to Off the Ball on Newstalk and Matt Williams opened up both barrels on Munster Fans for 'dumping their team, and not showing any loyalty to the team, which deserves better' I personally think he has a point. It was embaressing seeing masses of empty seats in both the stands, and the totally empty North and South terraces, with just the two banners with messages massaging the fans egos '16th Man' & 'Red Army' rather than words of support & encouragement for the team.

I was there and proud. Too much guff on this site and onradio talk shows. Munster are in transition with acoaching management set-up that is making plenty of mistakes. But for for crying out loud, supporters are supposed to be supporters.

I agree with most of the stated reasons for the low attendance.... and I found having to buy a ticket a hassle. But I chose to go because I wanted. I respect others who couldn't/wouldn't attend. Many of them went to games that I didn't.

I enjoyed the occasion on Saturday, and I don't care what Matt Williams says.

Bring on the final.
