This is the same "reason" being trotted out by the powers-that-be in this case too; they say that Mills missed a training session for the relay runners, conveniently ignoring the fact that she was representing the country in Barcelona (World Juniors). And ignoring the fact that she advanced to the semi-final and running 2 seconds faster than Cuddihy that w-end.....

Actually there are a number of Irish athletes faster than Cuddihy right now (she's 7th fastest this year), including Mills. Of course Cuddihy's selection has nothing to do with her dad being a medic for the OCI, or Patsy or Kevin being known to her......

Of course we all know that AAI is treating this Olympics as a big jolly. We have a few serious athletes (mainly the walkers) who are basically doing their own thing. We knew the old boys in the AAI hadn't changed, but I'm very disappointed that the "high performance director" seems to think the cronies are the ones to emulate too. Jim Hogan was correct in the 60s, and unfortunately we are still treated to the same cronyism.

Sorry to hear your guy missed a trip to Sydney, but I knew a few of those lads (2nd and 4 runner....) and thought the 4 running were our 4 fastest. Hadn't a clue about the 2 other travelling. Would your guy have a fist name beginning with J perchance...? (no need to answer that last one... ).

This is just a little blog I'm running for the Games. Appreciate if people would give it a read - funny bits, some serious bits, and - at the risk of moving in on Stanley's territory - some sexy bits too.

The beeb have decided there should be a distracting and annoying little noise as the Olympic rings cross the screen at the beginning and end of every instant replay.

This is not enjoyable. Shame on the beeb.

Pretty cynical play from Senegal, lucky to have 11, would have been lucky to have 10 on the park. Was it just me or was Giggs the least effective GB player?

No it was just Mark Lawrenson's nasal whine

to be honest I get the distinct impression the beeb would love it all to fail. They're currently taking any opportunity possible to knock the country, including taking a quote from an American politician (Romney), to American television (he used the word disconcerting) and putting it into a context where you'd think he'd said it was a total disgrace and disaster.

Getting off the Tube near work (Norf London) this am, these lovely young ladies were signing a few autographs and posing for pictures. Apparently they are staying in the student halls that are opposite the window I look out of ..

Just saw an 11- MN - XXX bus at the traffic lights with "Olympic Vehicle" on the back.

There mustn't be a bus in the UK left if they've had to import them ..

Must be a great buzz in London today Fitzy, or is it somewhat like the rugby, in that the city is so huge the athmosphere is completely local to the event?

I'm outside the main area at work, but there is definitely a buzz in the last few days once you hit town.

It's possibly a sense of pride that they have the games, crossing fingers that they don't cock up, and fear that some lunatic is going to target one of the venues.

Also people are more polite and understanding, which is unusual for London. I expect this to have worn off by about next Wednesday, when it'll be open season on tourists again ..

magnificent lunacy in the trafalgar square/ whitehall area last night - no one using the olympic lanes so the tourists thoight it was pedestrianised and were using it as such - great carnival atmosphere til the cyclists came careering around the bend screaming obscenities at them ( obnoxious cyclists , what are the chances of that ?) which dampened festivities somewhat til they were gone and it started up again - repeat ad lib to fade . great entertainment

Tough draw for Katie in the boxing but good news for some of the men.
Katie could face Queen Underwood in the 1/4s and Natasha Jonas or Cheng Dong in the 1/2s

Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon got bye's into the last 16
