    Toyota to continue as sponsor?

At Thomond Park Stadium today, Toyota Ireland
announced that it is to extend its partnership with Munster
    Rugby to June 2013.

The new three year deal will come as a major boost to
Munster as they embark on the 2010/11 season which
kicks off tomorrow evening with a pre-season match
against Leicester Tigers at Musgrave Park.

Toyota's partnership with Ireland's most successful rugby
province will be worth €5.75m over the next three seasons
and includes the title sponsorship of the Senior Munster
Rugby Teams competing in the Magners League, Heineken
Cup and British and Irish Cup. This will bring Toyota's
investment in Munster Rugby well beyond the €13m mark
having come on board as the principle sponsor of Munster
    Rugby in July 2004.

In addition to a basic sponsorship fee, Toyota's
commitment to Munster is further highlighted in a
continuation of its incentive based package related to
progression through to the final stages of the Heineken Cup
and Magners League. It also provides for continued
investment in general marketing, communications and
advertising that will help boost the Munster Rugby and
    Toyota brand images.

David Shannon, Managing Director, Toyota Ireland said: It
is a great pleasure for us at Toyota Ireland to announce
our continued sponsorship of Munster Rugby until 2013.

"Since 2004 we have been on a magical journey together.
One that has seen Munster teams deliver, to their
wonderfully devoted fans, two Heineken Cups, a Celtic Cup
and a Magners League. In tandem with this has been
Munster's magnificent achievement in developing a truly
iconic and worthy home for the team here in Thomond Park
    Stadium.

Commenting on the Sponsorship renewal Garrett
Fitzgerald, Munster Rugby Chief Executive, stated: Munster
have been in partnership with Toyota as our title sponsor
since July 2004. Toyota's professionalism, understanding
and support during this period has played a significant part
in the development of our brand and our success on the
    field.

The renewal of this sponsorship further confirms Toyota's
commitment to Munster Rugby and we are privileged and
delighted to have the opportunity to work with Toyota for a
    further three years, until 2013.

Interesting. I had felt the relationship was very much on the wane over the last maybe 18 months.

Business must be improving, despite all Toyota's problems.

Or because of their problems they feel they need to keep the
sponsorship going and try and generate good publicity. It's
    small change to Toyota.

good sponsorship - think they've cut back a bit on the goodies they used to hand out at the old venue - maybe they think the new fans would not use them!

Toyota were replaced by Super Value for the GAA sponsorship so they probably had money left in the advertising kitty to keep the contract with Munster.

Seems to be a good deal. The suggestion is that they received €7.25ml over the six years 2004 to 2010 so getting €5.75 ml for three years in this economic climate is excellent.

Think I'd rather be sponsored by a car maker than by a bank in today's market. See that Bank of Scotland (Ireland). Leinsters old sponsors, are pulling out of Ireland. While there is some nostalgia when you see the old Munster jerseys with the Bank of Ireland logo on them, Ido not liek to be reminded about banks when I am enjoying my sport!

Well done Toyota! Dougie must be very happy!

This sponsorship deal with Toyota will be up for renewal before the end of next season. In addition to all the other changes happening currently, this will be another really important challenge for Munster Rugby. The Toyota deal seems to have worked well for both parties up to now.

maybe although given way the last 4 years have gone, Munster can't take anything for granted.

They've been on board as the main sponsor since 2004, will they want to continue with it? I doubt it. Time to put out feelers to other companies and see what's on offer.

Given some of the other decisions that have been taken, I wouldn't trust management to have that much foresight, shure there's no problem....

While we might not be happy with has happened in the past 4 years the club still has massive support who buy a lot of clobber with the Toyota logo emblazoned on it. Also in the past 4 years Munster have been their domestic league champions twice, made the semi-finals of their domestic competition twice and have made the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup twice. A lot of clubs would die to have that level of success and would be an easy sell to most sponsors which I am sure Munster will be too.

It will be interesting to see how the numbers are crunched. Munster's profile and reach haven't declined, even if tickets aren't under so much pressure.

But sponsors change every so often - there's diminishing returns on sponsorship arrangements.

Losing Toyota wouldn't necessarily a sign of decline or failure. Not being able to replace them possibly would though.

I know but their logo just isnt being seen on the ultimate big day, plus with numbers down at TP it puts Munsters onthe back foot when it comes to crunching the numbers in negotiating talks.

Yes it would. Who are you kidding? Yourself and Grampa should keep off the lithium, you're being far too delusional.

More than likely Munster have a basic agreement with Toyota with bonus payments built in on achievement - the better Munster do, the more Toyota pay.

Munster is a good vehicle (pardon the pun) for Toyota. Not many chances to get a team involved in European competition and involving the main countries that Toyota sells cars to for relative buttons. For instance, Leinster isn't really much benefit to Bank of Ireland as it doesn't really trade outside Ireland anymore.

I have a massive objection to sponsorship being provided to sports teams and sports events by organisations that are after being massively baled out by the Irish Tax Payer.

Do calm down. As I said, sponsors come and go regardless of levels of success. Failure is defined not by departures, but in failing to land a replacement.

Don't let that get in the way of yelping hysteria though.

I instinctively agree, but if it's a sound commercial decision for a non-state supported business, then surely it's a sound commercial decision for a state supported one that's trying to trade its way away from state support?

TOYOTA Ireland has said that “no decision on an extension” to their title sponsorship of Munster Rugby has been taken, amid rumours that the contract is not be renewed when it expires next year.
Toyota’s partnership with the province is estimated to have been worth in excess of €13m since it came on board as principle sponsor in July 2004, but is due to expire in June 2013.......
