    Hey All,

Just wondering if anybody would be able to point me in the right direction. Our family has a mobile home in west Kerry where the water quality isnt great. The water stains the sinks , has a bit of a smell and basically is tearing the skin off us, does anybody have any experience/knowledge of any sort of filtration system that could be fitted directly to the supply. Obviously cost is an issue so it would need to be fairly reasonable.

    Cheers,

If you have mains water with reasonable pressuethen you need a reverse osmosis system. Probably cost about €300 assuming a DIY install. You can buy them on Ebay and places like that.

    Grandpa.

If you need to read up a little on what the problem is this link might help.

The company are local to me and I could recommend them except the distance involved wouldn't suit either party I'd reckon.

I live in a limestone area and if I didn't have a resin typefilter I'd need a couple of kettles a year and that would only be the start of it.

If through your rsearch you reckon it's that type of filter you need then expect to pay somewhere in the region of €1,000 I'm afraid.

What tpye of staining grandpa if its lime keep away from reverse osmosis or any type of micro filtration as the filter media will scale up quickly and may be rendered useless. If lime simple softening system will do a fine jog, this should work for iron too.

Do you have any idea of the water hardness in the area?

its a sand based area we're in, on a tombolo by all accounts! so i'm not too sure where that stands in relation to water hardness etc. I think the staining is due to the fact that the water supply well is pulling up water through the sand and silt.

    Hi Grandpa

I have my own well and the HSE drinking water quality tests were fine. However my water had a lot of iron and magnesium so the washing machine was turning white shirts red etc.

I had a system put in which fixed it but it cost about 3.5k and requires that you refill it with salt about every month or so. The guy that did it for me was excellent and very knowledgable but he lives in Wexford. Kerry might be a stretch but if you paid a consultation fee say I'm sure he'd point you in the right direction.

If you want his details just pm. Oh and I have no connection with him other than the fact that he did a good job for me.

You should send some water away for hardness testing very simple takes all of two minutes, if you are in a hard water area your local hardware store should have a water hardness test kit. If so then you need a softening system as described by Eamo above basically you remove certain contaminents with an ion exchange resin which will regenerate with a saturated salt solution. Frequency depends on level of hardness, iron etc. If you are going to use a sofening system then PM me your area and I should be able to point you in the right direction. You do need someone who knows what they are doing to set the system up but that been said they are very easy to operate all you need to remember is to buy salt from time to time and pop it in the brine tank.

If it is soft water then I would look initially to put in two simple filter cartridges in line one course say 100 microns and one finer about 5 microns should clear the water. Then just check the filters and throw them away and replace when dirty.
