hi, i've just checked imdbs top 250 movies of all time list and i've seen nearly every single one from the 1970s onwards- no wonder i am finding it harder and harder to find a good movie...

does anyone here have a good recommendation for a movie that most people probably would not have seen??

comedy/sci-fi/thriller/foreign/drama - whatever really

thanks!

That's impressive kaboom!

I presume that you have checked out this thread, and there are some good recommendations on there.

One foreign film that I really liked was Das Experiment - scary in that it's based on a real pyschological experiment.

Another quirky one that I saw recently was 500 days of Summer.

I like the Blade movies, although the last one is pretty rubbish, but they're worth watching as a series I think.

The Fifth Element is good too.

I am not a big fan of the older sci-fi ones, mainly because I just get distracted by the dated special effects, but for cheese factor you can't beat the Star Trek movies!

That was the one I couldn't think of!! It is simply fantastic

I also liked "All about my mother" and Pedro Almodóvar in general.

I used to subscribe to Screenclick and I would simply go to the foreign film section and pick a random title. Have to say 9/10 choices were gudduns. Might renew that actually, they keep sending me special offers...

If you liked "touching the void" I would rcommend the following two programmes, great viewing imo.
<DIV style="OVERFLOW: auto; WIDTH: 100%">

The first on is an incredible story about how the North face of the Eiger (last of the great peaks of the Alps)was conquered. Its a gripping story.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmjJBu0xiwc

The second one is about the "Dark side of Everest" and deals with the 1996 tragedies. There is some very controversial topics brought up where the SA climbers didn't try to save other climbers that they met in the death zone. The video quality of these programmes is excellent so If you have a spare hour or two watch these programmes because they are inspiring yet deeply sad.

This is a non-recommdation I guess. Just watched 'Lebanon' of which I had high hopes. It's ' Das Boot' without the character development or the narrative. In short it's rubbish. Derivative stuff is ok. I liked west side story but this thing is a step too far.

Come and See - 1990s USSR movie about the nazi occupation of Belorus
and the horrors of what was endured; excellent, moving, shocking, amazing - possibly the ultimate war movie

Once Were Warriors - NZ film about Maori culture colliding with modern urban life
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBpd5xy-vCY" target="_blank" target="_blank">
Eraserhead</a>... umm, well, you'd have to see it to understand - horror just got torn a new one

Atlantic City - Burt Lancaster as a gangster has-been, superb

Snatch - Brad Pitt is an irish traveller bare-knuckle boxer mixed up with london gangsters -- full of memorable quotes and stop-replay sequences just like Withnail... -- if you've seen it, watch it again. ["Tommy, the tit, is praying. And if he's not, he f**king well should be."]

Edit: Just noticed Thelma and Louise hasn't made that top 250 list FFS!

Edit 2: Do The Right Thing - Spike lee should be compulsory - absolute cracker set in a heat wave in New York - Public Enemy Vs Pizza. Definitive Spike joint

For the over the hill and the past-it, nothing is impossible.

Great film on BBC2 now that would fit the bill: the Visitor. Quirky and human and lovely.

And watched Tsotsi (South Africa)this evening, great. And it's Africa Day.

The Machinist will be on Film4 tonight at 11.25pm.

Another movie I saw a few years ago was The Woodsman, starring Kevin Bacon. Not easy watching, considering the difficult and challenging subject matter (the main character is a convicted paedophile) but it's genuinely worth giving this film your time.

Interesting, well-acted and directed movie on Film4 at 11.15 tonight, The Savages - story of an adult brother and sister who suddenly have to deal with their father and his intermittent dementia. It never descends into schmaltz - neither of the main characters is
particularly heroic, and they often come across as people who'd be just
as happy not to have anything to do with each other. Can be tough watching at times, but it's subtly done and an honest depiction of a family dynamic and how people have to live with the decisions they make.
Never mind perception because it isn’t real. It’s only what people think. Go out and make them think something else.

Tonight's Film4 offering is The Darjeeling Limited, at 11.10pm. If you liked The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, you might like this - not quite as much deadpan buffoonery, but worth a watch IMO.
