Thread: John Hayes

I thought Hayes was immense today. His best game in a red shirt that I can remember in 10 years.

Should have been man of the match. Head and shoulders above Ribery IMHO.

He was good alright, I don't think he has another season in him though. A good part of the reason that he's still our number one TH is because of a lack of younger fellas putting pressure on him, but fair play to the man for delivering once again!

He did well today, I hope that he bows out this season with a
HC medal in his backpocket and rides off into the sunset atop
one off his livestock. He owes us nothing.

What was all the fuss about the Saints front row before the game then. all the pundits (and several of the fans I bet) were expecting Munster to be distroyed in the scrums. You can be certain that the bull had no small part to play in keeping them quiet.

P.S. did anyone else catch Hooks theory as to why the Munsters scrum has been acting up for the last few seasons. I nearly wet myself, I hope MickO doesn't pay attention to it

My theory is that he has to pickat least one irish international player to knock and now that Tommy B is on fire he's going for a new target. I think the jet lag might explain his choice though

Here did anyone see the play where Northampton moved the
ball from the middle of the pitch just outside the 22 out the
wing and their second row offloaded back in to tong'huaia but
was in touch? then hayes tackled tonga'huaia into touch? i
looked at the replay straight after, the ground that the man
    covered was beyond words, hero.

Best scrummaging performance from him ive seen

    The scrum was awesome today.

How is it that the part of our game that keeps getting written off over and over again appears to function when it really matters?

Perhaps a full fit Horan, Flannery and Hayes are actually still the same lads that made life difficult during last years six nations for France amongst others.

Are we too soon to write them off?

Hayes had his best game in the scrum for a long long time, but it was a huge victory for the scrum as a unit. Marcus got a serious one over Murray.

Following a nightmare opening scrum (exact replay of the last TP game) we were on top and disrupted their ball a couple of times, took one against the head, and made s**t of their scrum in the second half down by their line (the one that turned into a maul).

It was our best scrummaging performance in years. We could speculate as to why that was, but I really really hope it's down to Paul McCarthy who has had a few weeks with the side now. It would indicate we have a good coach capable of diagnosing technical issues with the unit and correcting them.

As for the original post, a little over the top, but I suppose understandable given the win and the sentiment around. Bull did concede 3 penalties.

If our scrum continues like this it will be a huge boost to us as a side - and will raise further questions as to how the unit was coached over the past seasons and a half. Same applies to Ireland.

It seemed to me that our props were both turning in, which seeing as everyone else is doing it is great

If we had a wall of fame at TP his name would be first on the list.

must admit, after the 1st srum I got a little nervous but after that, we could've knocked on for fun just to attack their scrum. Yes, what a covering tackle from the Bul. Came from nowhere!

Given what had happened in the pool game, the scrum was probably the most impressive aspect of yesterday's game.

Great performances by Bull/Horan and Mushy was again solid during his brief cameo.

No doubt, we also benefited from knowing exactly what to expect from Saints and having the timeto come up with waysto counteract it.

I just wonder were people looking at yesterday's scrum with their eyes fully open. Technically the front row played much stronger and did not allow the Northampton props to upend them. If they can do it yesterday why is it not done week in week out. Will they replicate yesterday against Biarritz? I doubt it !!! I watched Hayes and Horan in open play and have to say they were pretty bad - missing tackles, doing little work andnever carried a ball. John Hayes has been a fantastic player for Munster and Ireland but for his own sake he should make a decision about his future at the end of this season rather than face another season in decline to the point that he maylose the great Respect that everyone has for him. Horan who was much better yesterday in the scrum seems to be suffering physically and a replacement foreign prop like du Preez should be brought in over the summeror else we face serious problems with the scrum next season. Mushy needs to be starting in games as he can cause havoc around the field and it would help to build his confidence in the scrum. Davy Ryan who is also a mobile and a difficult to play against propneeds to play more. To do nothing in regard to the props at the end of May will be a major mistake.

John Hayes was fantastic around the pitch today - and the
covering tackle he put on Tong'huaia exemplifies that.

All the old banners were replaced earlier this season, we had been using the old ones since 2004 and they have seen better days. In addition they were too deep for the parapets in the stands.
