I can't believe no one mentioned My Name Is Earl - well worth a look, from what I've seen on here over the years most people on this site would like it.

Saw the first eipsode of Hell on Wheels a few months back. It was very middle of the road for me. I didn't bother with any more of it since then.
We'll have to uncuff him and "de-dildo" him, obviously... Smash up the furniture like he was chasing you all rapey. Fortunately, he's Italian so that shouldn't be too hard to sell.

Anybody ever watched Person of Intetest? Is it any good? One of the Nolan brothers is heavily involved in it.

Just brilliant, with every character perfectly cast - Ian finally lives down Lovejoy. Pity it was seemingly halted and never finished so it kinda hangs in the air.
Also, a guilty pleasure was Flash Forward, also discontinued after 2 series - crappy but compelling. Ludicrous plots, poorly acted but I liked it!
For laughs, you cannot beat Frasier box sets, though badly running on empty towards the end.
I am addicted to an Italian sub-titled series about a Sicilian detective named Montalbano - based on novels of Andrea Camilleri. Excellent job by Italian TV, available from Amazon.

The latest 'Sherlock' re-imagining from BBC set in modern day London, fantastic show. Both Holmes and Watson are really brought to life in it.

Also, there are only 3 episodes per season(2 seasons) but they're 120 mins each so it's nearly like watching a movie for each one.

I'm not especially interested in crime thrillers or anything like that but I can't recommend this highly enough

Just started Sons of Anarchy (2 episodes) and sadly unimpressed so far. It's derivative (Sopranos clone) and plot-lines stretch credulity .Acting and script are ok but unsubtle . I'll try a couple of more episodes I guess and hope it improves.

Agree with Kevy, Sherlock was excellent

Not sure about Homeland though, thought the first series tailed off a bit near the end..

    Sherlock is TV Gold.
The Newsroom is very good, if you liked the West Wing, you will like it. If you don't like Sorkin, stay away.
Haven't watched Homeland yet....that's next on the list.

Agreed - Newsroom is class - but again its a subjective thing - if you liked West wing youll love this - I havr to watch with subtitles some times as the scripting is so fast and subtle. Not sure where a second series will come from given theyre pretty much up to date on world events now and the first series started at about 4 years ago. Following that logic theyed have to wait til '16 before relkeasing the next one.

Its also a great way of catching up on the main news stories from past few years - like a thinking mans reeling in the years.

Yeah I was very sceptical until about the 4th or 5th episode. Burned through it from that point and the new season has started pretty well. Keep at it, takes about half the first season to get enough things going for it to be compelling.

halfway through season 2 of Fringe, a sort of updated x files but with an overriding plot narrative. It's worth a watch for sci fi fans . Think there are 5 seasons in total.

Almost finished season 1 of Cheers.
Superb comedy, go back and watch it, its the template for how so much of what followed in terms of sitcoms and other shows. Nicholas Colassanto as Coach is a superb actor and brings a wonderful subtlety to a roll that i'm sure Graham Lenihan and Arthur Matthews were subconciously drawing on when writing for Fr Dougal in Fr.Ted. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScpDRX18sBU)

There's so much I missed from previous viewings and Norm's one-liners as he enters the bar are priceless. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81QluTS-mWc)

I've been watching a Danish/Swedish murder mystery series called "Bridge", or maybe it's "The Bridge"....not sure....excellent stuff though. Good characters and some excellent performances especially from the two leads.

Recently got my hands on "Freaks and Geeks", the high school in the 80's based comedy/drama from Judd Apatow, (he of knocked up/40 year old virgin/anchorman/superbad fame). It's got a very recognisable cast of his, before they were famous of course, and despite what you might think about American high school teen based comedies, this one is excellent.

Also have seen a few episodes of the sitcom "Community" which i have enjoyed very much. Nicely ridiculous and has some of the best pop culture references i've seen in anything so far.

Have been watching "Homeland" season 2....hope they end the current storyline at the end of this series tbh, it's starting to get a little ridiculous and at this rate (spoilers in white!) yer man will actually be President of the US while also being an Al Q'aeida sleeper cell all of his own at the same time. Needs to end after this season.

+1 on freaks and geeks , I watched it over the summer , I had read great things about it and it did not dissapoint , great cast of people who went on to bigger things.

Community is my favourite comedy of recent years , its gone off the boil in season 3 but the paintball episodes at the end of seasons one and two are terrific .

Firefly mentioned earlier might be my favourite show ever.

ive heard the/bridge is good alright. i think fringe is excellent myself.

also saw an add for misfits recently which (for those old enough) may be a misfits of science remake? although you could argue plenty of shows in recent years were

Thats an idea and a good idea is a good idea as they say. Nearly finished Fraiser set it is amazing how much it uses slapstick comedy and seen as Fraiser was "born" in Cheers may as well.

Still working through Morse with long winter nights coming along might make a dent in it.
